Hang in there folks, we’re almost into September…

The Globe and Mail has got a very interesting article up discussing the latest developments in the ongoing battle between Jim Balsillie and the NHL. At the very centre of whole controversy could be an antitrust lawsuit filed by Balsillie if he feels he can prove that the NHL was acting to protect the position of the Toronto Maple Leafs, rather than the league as a whole. If it is shown that the Maple Leafs have the right to veto such a move (and it’s speculated that the Leafs organization believes that’s the case), then that would be in violation of the antitrust law, and thus illegal.

The Toronto Star reports that the Leafs may get very little if any money at all in compensation if a new team should enter the Soutern Ontario market, a belief certainly contrary to the speculated territorial rights reaching astronomical figures as high as hundreds of millions of dollars. The article quotes findings from a recent economic investigation in saying that Leafs fans could expect lower ticket prices, but demand would likely still be high enough to sustain the sellouts.

And now a question to all the readers, particularly the ones in or around the Hamilton area: Do you support the notion of another NHL franchise in Southern Ontario, and would you consider switching and/or splitting allegiances?

@ RJ: I’m with ya on that one bud. I almost never pick any Leaf players on my fantasy teams because most of them are terrible to begin with, and the ones that are of some small fantasy value get so overrated that they always end up going much higher than I would normally consider them.

Does anyone know of a fantasy league report for this season? Something along the lines of the top five players in each category?

Gus, do you do anything like that?

If cheering for the Leafs mean I’m a supporter of the Evil Empire, call me a Storm Trooper! Born and raised in Southern Ontario, I will always be loyal to Toronto sports teams. You say Hamilton? I hate that place, to me it’s as a desirable place to live as Tatooine, lots of dirt. Now if only Tannenbaum Palpatine and Peddie Vader can use the MLSE Death Star to get the Leafs a Stanley Cup…and I could stop using Star Wars analogies.

Hey Alex – no and no.

Hamilton’s a bad idea – never been able to support teams well in the past. But – I would still love to see Bettman and the owners lose on the anti-trust angle. Pisses me (and probably the creditors) off that Bettco. would rather run a franchise into the ground then let a new owner find another viable location.

What piss me off are bandwagon jumpers!!!
the leafs prices are too expensive….whah, whah, whah….the leafs are not wining the cup…..whah, whah, whah….I don’t like to watch…..SO DONT WATCH AND SUPPORT!!
Before JFJ the Leafs made the playoffs for 10+ season straight, 2 conference finals, won their division in 2000, and made to the third round in 2002 and the list goes on.
I bet BIG money that most of you were cheering pretty hard in those times. I bet that they will jump bandwagons when the Leafs start wining again. Thats the problem in T.O too many bandwagon jumpers. Screw you all. I cheer because I grew up a leaf fan and thats all there is …. not because there isn’t a second team in Toronto or Hamilton, but because I am what I am…. a LEAF FAN!
I hope Hamilton gets a team and then cant support it cause Canadian fans CANNOT support a LOSER! Thats what the Coyotes are…a bad team. If you guys complain about the Leafs like this what are you going to do when the Coyotes come and lose almost every game? are you gonna pay 100 a ticket, cause thats what its going to cost! You think Balls-silly is overpaying by 50 mill so that Canadians can watch hockey? NO, he is taking advantage of the fact that so called “hockey fans”, aka bandwagon jumpers, will come to watch.
IF the coyotes come and suck, like they already do, what justifies watching them and paying money?

I just want to see more teams in Canada be it Tuktoyuktuk or Hamilton, why not try Winnipeg again? They went back to Atlanta, and Atlanta was a failed market. Winnipeg, Qubec City heck why not even give Regina a shot. I’m sure they are fans a plenty who would love to go to an NHL game week in and week out in those locations. The only problem is would they have the Corperate support you would get in southern Onatrio.

@Alex and RJ – yes, drafting fantasy NHL teams, it has been pretty dry drafting Leaf players the last few years although I did take Ponikarovsky and a late flyer on Grabovski last season.
My theory in hockey drafts is to bet with my “head” – not my “heart!” But of course I like at least one token Leaf!
This year my plan is to grab both Kulemin and Tlusty late (we draft 220-260 players) – Stalberg or Bozak in the rookie category – and perhaps White as a late d-man. Gustavsson? Depends upon the pre-season reports!
There will be more Leaf players drafted this season than in past seasons – that might be a problem!

    @ Grahamzky

I also try to pick with my head, not my heart, picking with your heart usually leads to a 6-10th place finish, but I usually end up with at least one Leaf. As Alex said as well, in our area, they usually go 3 or 4 rounds sooner than they should, but I’m hoping to get one late this year. My hope is that Kabs falls because of last year and I can pick him up in a later round as steal on D or Orr falls far enough for me to take him in my pim only catagory, I’ve also got Grabs and Poni listed as hopefully a last round steal as well. We have about 13 – 15 of us and draft around 110 – 120 forwards and if I could get Grabs or Poni anywhere after 100, I would consider that a steal. Ideally, I would take Kabs, Orr, Grabs and Poni (only in my one pool that doesn’t count plus/minus) with my final 4 picks allowing me to have the best of both worlds.

@13Leafes35 – I think what you’re talking about with such disdain is the very thing that has caused the MLSE to shake up the Leafs in the last year. While i’m not a bandwagon supporter, there is a lot of useful applications of the ‘swing vote’ that Toronto posesses.
    .
When a corporation who’s sole purpose is generating revenue through its sporting franchise is told to chose between a safe profit margin at the cost of success (the 10+ seasons of playoff contention where the Leafs had no real hope of winning the cup) or a complete overhall of the system for the chance at success (the purging of fan favourites from the team to ensure success in the future) a corporation will pick the prior option.
    .
Enter the hordes of bandwagon fans who will not support a losing team if given any other option. All of a sudden acturial mathemeticians at the MLSE run the figures and predict that the company’s flagship product was no longer making returns indefinately when faced with a declining fanbase. You see with loyal fans, a franchise is secure. With fanatical fans, a franchise is spoiled. There needs to be some sort of equilibrium between loyal fans and bandwagon fans in order to force a team to excel.
    .
I would go as far as saying Canadian treams are at a disadvantage due to the prominence of the sport in Canada. The team can do relatively poorly and still be the most important pro sport team in the province! If you look at the last 4 teams to win the cup… how many of those teams were of any significance to their city until winning the cup? Carolina– none (even after winning..), Anaheim– none, Detriot– relatively important, Pittsburg– 2nd behind NFL maybe tied with baseball (which is ridiculous when considering how amazing their team is!).
    .
As far as Canadians not supporting a losing team… I’m not so sure thats true. Canadians will support a home team. I’m sure regardless of how the Coyotes fair, the people of Hamilton and SW Ontario would support them. The team is stacked with tons of young talent, and a few quality veterens (sounds kind of familiar doesnt it?). No the ticket prices wont be cheap. JB isn’t jumping through hoops to get this team so he can give the tickets away for nothing. They will be priced strategically lower than Leafs tickets but high enough to pay the bills and give JB the return he’s looking for.

@RJ – think if you want Kaberle you are going to have to draft him earlier than what you are presently anticipating. Kabs is still an elite d-man offensively – and many other non-Leafs fans unfortunately realize this!
Think 50-55 pts. and you should be close!

From the Coyotes: their first pick 2010 and 2012

    @13Leafs35
    .
Absolutely JB is a money hungry business mogul. He’s but his Balls-ille in a vice because he knows the kind of money he can make on this franchise if it goes to Hamilton. But the reason it’ll work is because, the Leafs won’t drop their ticket prices (nor will they have to… they’ll continue to sell out); and the Coyotes will sell out despite higher than average ticket prices because of all the overflow from hockey fans who cant get tickets to a Leafs game. And i’d be willing to bet the Coyotes have a die hard group of followers within 2 seasons of coming to Hamilton, with bandwagon and opportunistic fans providing enough of a market to fill the remaining stadium seats. They’ll do well here.
    .
Oh and as it stands right now, except for a soft defense the Coyotes are in a better spot to contend in 2 years than the Leafs are. Look at their rookies, Turris, Boedker, Muller, Hanzal, these guys are legit top line threats. Oh and a guy named Shane Doan… heard of him?
    .
Not saying i’d be willing to jump ship, but i’ve always like the Coyotes, and can see them being a dangerous team in the near future. If management just had a year or two of stablility to right the ship they might actually make something of that team.
    .
Not sure the MLSE would like to cut off the bandwagon fans… in fact… thats a really bad idea lol.

I hear you man!!! Its been pretty damn boring without any news, Weve almost made it tho seasons not to far away ……Go Leafs Go!!

As for the hockey going to Toronto, I dont think the leafs have to worrry about losing fan base or revenue. If you lose one season ticket holder in toronto another one will fill in. But it doesnt look like its gonna happen anyways , the NHL bought the coyotes with every intention of keeping the franchise where it is. But why hamilton anyways why not winnipeg or quebec etc.?

    @ Grahamzky

I agree, but we are only required to have 2 D, so only a max of 30 are taken and out of those about 10 or so are taken in the last 2 or 3 rounds. Our format is straight pts, (so no +/- to worry about in this pool) 8 fwd, 2 d, 1 goon, 1 team, 1 rookie, 1 goalie in any order. Some of the sexier picks should definetley go first which may leave Kabs still there by the 4th last round. If not I won’t take him, too many good forwards, and goalies, not to mention only about 3 or 4 premier rookies and teams left on the board in the first 4 or 5 rounds to draft Kabs. More than likely though someone (there are 3 or 4 idiots in this pool who would do this), will grab him in the 3rd round with one or two of Green, Boyle, Weber, or Lidstrom left on the board.

    @ Schenn

If it is just pts and no positions then a few late steals that everyone might forget about is Steve Sullivan – high risk, high reward, but for 10th round, if you have no other injury risks might be worth a flyer.

    A few others:

Prospal – maybe 70pts playing with Gaborik?
    Dubinsky – see above.
Bertuzzi – 60 pts? possible with the wings? maybe.
    Jason Williams – see above
Mike Kunuble – doubt he’s still there in the 10th round, but if so grab him – playing with OV
Radim Vrbata – much improved TBay team, may put up pts.
Fedetenko, Kunitz, Guerrin – All about line mates, a pilon would put up 40 pts playing with Maklin and Crosby
Steve Bernier – Is he finally going to break out?

There is a few, hope that helps, good luck!

@LukeSchenn – so your 90-100th place guys you’re looking at 55-60 pt guys, right? Guys that should go around there are Saku Koivu, Jordan Staal, Martin Erat, Joe Pavelski, Drew Stafford, Brandon Dubinsky, Pierre-Marc Bouchard and David Perron. Want to gamble on young guns – Jakob Voracek, Kyle Okposo – and what about our own Nikolai Kulemin? What will the rookies John Taveras and Matt Duchene get?
@RJ – If you don’t get the top three picks (Malkin, Ovechkin and Crosby), are you considering taking Mike Green fourth overall? I am! He is d-man who gets forwards points – get one of your D positions out of the road right away. I’m in basically the same type of draft(s) and am leaning that way. What do you think?
Kabs should be about the 10-15 d-man taken, going to wait that long to pull the trigger?
