Sounds from the Rink

While many of us were toiling away on “live online blogs” to get our hockey fix, a few MLHS writers were fortunate enough to make the trip down to see Game 2 of the rookie tournament in Kitchener against the Boston Bruins. Down at the rink, MLHS’ own Gus Katsaros managed to sneak in a few minutes with Leaf GM Brian Burke and rookie Nazem Kadri to chat about the game and the upcoming season.

Part 1 – Brian Burke

Q: General thoughts about the game? Any performances you were particularly pleased with?

Burke: Stalberg, Bozak, Hanson and Kadri were all good. What really stood out to me is that they’re all three zone players. They’re all very conscientious defensively. Obviously they’re very well coached.

Q: The one thing I’ve noticed about this defense corps is that they all possess the ability of a good outlet pass. It’s certainly an interesting strategy with additions like Beauchemin and Komisarek.

Burke: Well, the less time you spend in your end, the more time you spend in other zones. I find it amusing that people point out their low point totals, but to me, we signed Komisarek to be defensively reliable and make a good first pass. Beauchemin, once again, a good first pass.

Q: The guys you mentioned here like Bozak and Stalberg, they’re both 23 while a lot of these kids are in the teens or just turning 20. Do you expect more of them because of that?

Burke: Well they should stand out here because they’re bigger and more experienced, so I’m not surprised by that. For a guy like Bozak, he does all the little things right. So yeah, they should distance themselves a bit and have shown that.

Q: Can you talk a bit about Blacker. He’s played very well the last two games.

Burke: Well, he’s really mobile and really crowds the forwards. In the defensive zone coverage, he gets on them quickly to take away time and space. Very energetic player, good wheels, smart. I like him.

Q: Like what you saw from Jamie Devane in the first period? The fight? Kind of the what you’re looking for right?

Burke: With Devane, I think your tough guy has to play. We feel he’s going to improve as a player. He’s gonna be able to log some minutes and contribute some of that as well.

Part 2 – Nazem Kadri

Q: Was the pace of a game like that very different from junior?

Kadri: Yeah, I think it is. Obviously, the caliber of guys is here is very high with most of them having been drafted. They’re pretty awesome players and it’s good to be here.

Q: Another high profile guy here in this tournament that Leaf fans are looking forward to is the “Monster”. What do you think of the way he played?

Kadri: He’s a big guy who moves laterally pretty well, and he’s good with his body. He definitely seems NHL ready and he’s a helluva goalie.

Q: It’s looking like the guys were really stepping it up another level in terms of physicality out there.

Kadri: Yeah, I really think so. They play the kind of game where they really come after you, whether it’s a power forward or a more of a fighter. They’re definitely more aggressive at this level and it’s something I’m going to have to deal with, and I feel that I’ve managed to do that pretty well today.

Q: How does it feel to be playing in Kitchener again?

Kadri: It feels great, feels like I’m back at home. I’m born and raised here and spent some quality years here developing as a hockey player. So it’s nice to be back and I’m pretty excited about it.

A big thanks to Gus for the post-game audio.

That’s cool it’s a pretty impressive looking building, although I Can’t say I won’t miss seeing the classic lakeshore pratices but that place is going to be awesome! It’s MASSIVE!

    @djstml

I’m pretty sure he signed in Europe like IBLeaf said…There are still some free agents around that would compliment this leaf offensive unit well such as Afinogenov, he has had a 70+ point season under his belt too. I know he is 30, but for a one year deal at around 2.5 mil he would be a good fit. People always bring up that this would “take time away from our younger players” but lets take a step back, are players like Kadri really ready to make the jump to the NHL? Let them develop in Junior and the AHL first, no sense rushing things…

Think like a GM folks. Burke is not contacting anyone with a proposed trade for Kaberle. If they, on the other hand, call him with a proposal..then he will at least listen. It will take a hell of a proposal even now.

If Burke does see someone he actively wants, well he has the brains, picks and players to pull it off. That is if it is meant to be.

Kaberle will not be moved now.

I am snots and I am not a little horse.

Elena Dementieva would like that too! during her thank you speech after she won the rogers cup, she told the fans that her boyfriend Maxim Afinogenov will hopefully sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

  • LeafsRyan.

    White + Poni + Steafonavich + 4th for Kessel.
Poni takes Kessel’s spot on bostons lineup either on 2nd or 3rd line. He will produce 25-30 goals and is a good 2 way player. White is a good reliable defencmen who can put the puck in the net and would make the team easily as a strong 5-6 d-man who can put points. Alot of you suggest Tlusty but I would much rather deal Stefanovich. The 4th round pick is to sweeten the deal. We’re getting a 21 year old sniper people.

Well, here is the video from yesterday:

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZNGEJO0H

It’s a little long, 18 minutes and nothing fancy, no music, just sounds of the game and crowd… and my kid screaming at Devane. You might not find it too interesting as I tried to show the players, their speed and skill. I missed most of the goals, 3 trips to the washroom in the 1st period alone will do that, but I guess it’s ok for my first attempt.

    Enjoy

Stemniak wont be put on waivers because that would go down as the worst trade in history.

As for d men Komi, Beauchmen, Kaberle, Finger, XLB, Van Ryn and Schenn. White will start the year on the fourth line in mayers spot

@ leafsryan… i would say no to that trade because with the more ice time poni is expected to play this season i think he gets 25-30 goals this year and with white we know how valuable he is as he can play both d and forward and stefanovich looks promising… which i think is too much to give up for an injured kessel. 3 draft picks that aren’t proven for kessel sure but not for white, poni and stefanovich. now i realized you added a 4th round pick too… no way too much lol

I agree. Too much for Kessel. White will be in another package. If he is included in a Kessel package it would be more like White, Tlusty and a 2nd. Kabs or White will be in a package to either Fla or Buff.
    .
    .
Iff BB plays his cards right he may get up to 3 new young top 6 forwards. Imagine that. More likely just one IMO. Would love Kessel, Stafford ( Buff ) and Dubs (NYR). Sub in Horton anywhere you’d like. I think its a possibility but can it be had without giving up the future? You can argue that these players are young enough to be considered the futre. Lock them up for a long term!

@ Gilbert. Wow, really. I know he wants out but that would be tough stuffing Mayers with the Marlies. I think BB would try to move him for a pick first, waive him as a second alternative. When he was brought in it was to add character to the dressing room. I even heard people on here say he could be the captain.
