Hitting the Links – Tuesday

Some quick links and discussion points for a quiet Tuesday night. Plenty to talk about including the highlights of a Burke media scrum at the grand opening of the Mastercard Centre for Hockey Excellence (MCHE), the GM’s speak out on the Phil Kessel situation and the possibility of an offer sheet, rookie tournament video highlights and the latest developments in the ongoing Phoenix Coyotes ownership drama.

- Brian Burke Highlights via NHL Network:

  • Still trying to upgrade the forward group; may deal a defenseman to address that need but prefers to have a minimum of 8 NHL calibre blueliners
  • Has looked into dealing draft picks for a forward
  • Considers Matt Stajan and Mikhail Grabovski as potential top six forwards
  • Feels that Bozak, Hanson and Stalberg have all dominated the rookie tournament thus far, as they should
  • Has been most impressed with Kadri thus far because of his age
  • Has no issue at all with offer sheets, but is not considering one for Phil Kessel at this time

- If you’ve got some time to spare, then Leafs Lunch has some nice discussion from the GM’s regarding the whole Phil Kessel situation.

- The Globe and Mail has the lowdown on the newest Leaf/Marlie practice rink.

- Finally getting their act together, Leafs TV has a Game in Six highlight compilation of the Pittsburgh – Toronto game of the rookie tournament.

- In a poetic twist of fate, it appears that the fate of the Phoenix Coyotes will be fought over mano a mano directly between Balsillie and the NHL with TSN reporting that Ice Edge Holdings has pulled out of the bidding.

Must be why. I’ve never had that problem before at MLHS.
But anyway a guy at HFBoards in Bostons section is reporting a trade is already done pending Burke can get PK to sign. The guy is tusted so most are saying.

    @Board

I hope this can be explained to me. But I’ve been at the three games in Kitchener and honestly, I was again very confused about the love for Blacker.

Now I dont want to be too critical the kid is just starting on his career, however he was very shaky tonight again.
Single handedly responsible for 2 goals and almost another.
    1) Gets beaten and has to take a penalty on a breakaway (A bad penalty mind you. If you’re going to take that penalty, make sure he doesn’t have a chance at a shot).
    2) Gets beaten in a similar fashion and goal is scored.
    3) Goes for a big hit behind his own blueline, misses and leaves a man alone leading to another goal. I understand that people are high on this kid, but I don’t understand how anyone can say he is even close to NHL ready.

Again I know I sound critical I just don’t see where the media crush comes from. Burke may love him for 3-4 years from now, but as for now he wouldn’t last a game in the NHL.

    My thoughts on game #3:
    .
Kadri played great. Easily the most skilled player on the ice.
    .
It is quite obvious though to anyone who watched that he needs to put on size. He got pushed around too much. If he were 20 pounds bigger he would have dominated the game…
    .
Nice to see Stefanovich get the goal. It was a beauty. He was one of the best Leafs tonight.
    .
IMO the best Leafs were Stefanovich, Stalberg and Kadri. Disappointments for me tonight were Bozak and Hanson… However, I did miss the 2nd period.

    @ Spayde
Blacker had a rough game tonight.
    .
He definitely needs more experience. Probably two or three years of development before he ever makes it to the NHL.
    .
Reminded me a lot of McCabe… some offense and grit… smothered by poor decisions.

What’s all this about a deal being completed for Kessel?

    Pure rumour?

The guy who has posted that rumour is quite reliable.

In the past he has said things and they have come true. He’s better then Eklund that’s for sure.

My spider sense tells me Burke could be on the verge of landing Kessel. When asked the other night if such a deal involved picks, he immediately responded with yes. Almost like they were already on the table. Another factor that has to be considered is that the Bruins have arranged events to unfold this way. Make no mistake they knew with each signing they made over the last couple years that this would put Kessel on the outside. Finally Burke and his advisors are together with Chiarelli and key people.
So you are at a poker table and you are short stacked. Normally you avoid battles with the best couple of players while trying to go after inferior oponents who are more predictable and read well. Burke has taken on one of the very best GMs in Chiarelli and I for one am very concerned for my beloved Leafs.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Kessel is very good. I do not think he is dependant on Savard for success. I am only slightly concerned over health issues. My fear is that Chiarelli will flat out take more than he gives. Regardless of what Chiarelli says, he doesn’t want Kessel as much as the compensation returning, or he would have made room to sign him. If he can get the compensation from a bottom team like the Leafs he will be very pleased. Clearly according to Burke a first rounder in 2010 is involved, a defenceman is involved, and maybe another pick or prospect. One would think a prospect because they are currently watching them.
So lets say Toronto’s first is on the table. If the odds makers in Vegas are correct then this could be a lottery pick with Taylor Hall potential. Which defenceman on Toronto’s roster would a shrewd GM like Chiarelli want who fits in his very limited cap space? Ian White who was one of Toronto’s best players last year, who is still getting better each year. White was plus 6 playing against other teams best with a save percentage of .885 behind him. If you put him on Boston with Thomas behind him saving at .930% White would have been about plus 36. Finally as far as prospects go Stalberg seems to have everyones attention so Burke may allow him in on the deal. So lets say it is Toronto’s first, White and Stalberg for Kessel. In my opinion Chiarelli will walk away the winner and Burke will have been completely fleeced.
If the Leafs finish in the bottom five and do not even have their pick, then I expect Burke will be traded. Maybe I am way off base but I have this funny feeling.
