Leafs vs. Flyers Post-Game Thoughts

The Toronto Maple Leafs are now riding a three-game winning streak after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime on Saturday night by a score of 5-4.

Yes, it’s pre-season, but who cares? It’s hockey, and we’re winning. Enough said.

Here’s some random thoughts about the game:

* Jason Allison, do not quit your day job. For every play he executes, he manages about triple the amount in turnovers. One turnover in particular could have easily cost the Leafs the game. Allison was skating in the neutral zone, with absolute zero speed, and failed to keep control of the puck after an outlet pass from Mike Komisarek (who has been exceptional on the blueline thus far), so he attempted to dangle around Claude Giroux. Didn’t work, and Giroux had a partial breakaway, but luckily hit the side of the net on a missed opportunity. I think it’s safe to say that Allison does not fit in the Leafs’ regime. His lack of foot speed makes him look awkward with the rest of the troops, and with Phil Kessel acquired, the top-six is now more crowded than ever. Aurevoir, Allison.

* As I said above, Komisarek has been a force on the blueline. He’s sticking up for his teammates, laying out bone-crushing body checks, blocking shots and not shying away from dropping the gloves. He’s the definition of truculence. I know, I know… overused. But it’s so easy!

* Nazim Kadri is gaining confidence out there. Multiple times I spotted the 18-year-old calling for the puck with confidence on the powerplay. He entered the Flyers’ zone with relative ease on a few occurrences, a valuable asset for a player of his ilk. While he won’t crack the lineup this season, I will not be surprised in the slightest if he’s a Leaf by the 2010-11 campaign. He just needs to bulk up a bit. He’s got the aggressiveness to survive as a smaller forward in the National Hockey League, so as soon as he adds size and gains even more confidence out there, he’s going to compliment a player like Kessel extremely well. I just got shivers.

* Vesa Toskala was solid. Yes, he let in 4 goals on 29 shots, and a couple of the goals were questionable, but as head coach Ron Wilson explained after the game, he’s adjusting to a new system under goalie coach Francois Allaire. Not to mention the guy hasn’t played in a very long time. He also made a couple of nice saves in overtime that allowed Niklas Hagman to go the other way and finish the game. Hold judgment on him until the regular season debuts.

* Hagman is the next Alexander Ovechkin. What a goal, folks. Very reminiscent of his highlight reel goal last season. Watch it here: Sick Hagman Goal

* Matt Stajan is looking to pick up where he left off–and then some. He was the hardest working player out there tonight, and managed a goal (a nice one, actually) and an assist. He’s developing into the ideal second-line center. Solid in all three zones and can pot anywhere from 50-60 points. I’ll keep him, thanks. Tyler Bozak may have to move to the wing if he is indeed destined for the Leafs this season. Stajan won 56% of his faceoffs tonight, going 10 for 18.

* Francois Beauchemin and Tomas Kaberle look to make a formidable pairing on the PP. Reminded me of the Kaberle-McCabe days right away. Only Beauchemin can play defense and doesn’t score on his own net. What a bomb he has from the point. And Kaberle looks extremely comfortable out there. Perhaps the newly implemented toughness will help his game after all.

* Colton Orr is the Leafs’ version of Chuck Norris. Period.

This is my first post-game report, so take it easy on me, comrades.

What are your thoughts on the game?

Update: Here are the Leafs’ first cuts via www.mapleleafs.com:

“The following players were assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League: Alex Berry, Darryl Boyce, Josh Engel, Andrew Engelage, Tom Galvin, Stefano Giliati, Richard Greenop, Juraj Mikus, Dale Mitchell, Phil Oreskovic, Todd Perry, James Reimer, Kyle Rogers, Joe Ryan, Greg Scott, Robert Slaney, and Mikhail Stefanovich.

The Maple Leafs assigned the following players to their respective junior clubs: Jesse Blacker (Windsor – OHL), Joel Champagne (P.E.I. – QMJHL), and Brandon Manning (Chilliwack – WHL).

Bill Thomas and Juha Uotila have been released from their Professional Try-Out contracts.”

You stay classy, MLHS.

@ yyzdpb – I am somewhat expecting Stajan to be moved out along with 1 D (actually hoping this happens) – not because I have anything against Stajan per se.. but, would like to see our centers as follows:

    Grabovski
    Bozak
    Wallin
    Primeau

This one move would clear up the log jam – and basically give us 4-5 4th liners – which really, is what you want..

Mayers should be gone however possible. Our 4th line should be
    Orr-Primeau-Rosehill
Wallin will probably play on the 3rd line because hes a really quick guy, he can score, play pk and go up against the other teams top guys. A good 3rd line would be something like
Wallin-Mitchell-Stalberg I think. Thats the decent size/speed/scoring touch we need.
Then our top 6 are all up in the air, with really only Grabovski, Poni and Hagman REALLY holding down spots

Wallin wasn’t signed as an incentive to bring Goose on board. Wallin approached Burke at the worlds around April and explained he wanted to have another go at the NHL. I so agree that it would be rather crase to have him end up in the minors on a one way contract, but if he’s out played by our young guys…

Primeau stays–his PK is very effective. Wallin I’m not so sure about. He has neither impressed nor unimpressed me. Gustavsson is under contract now anyway, so if Wallin is cut, so what?
From what I’ve seen, Rosehill-Primeau-Orr is a Primeau 4th line. (sorry) Mitchell is a lock centering the third line and I for one would like to see White on his wing. Mayers is expendable–Burke might be able to get a third for him from somebody.

Does anyone think a package like Stajan, White, and maybe a prospect would land us Brayden?
I am really curious as to why he’s seemingly holding out with the contract..

@luke I’ve been through this with Jordan, and he is correct I can’t find a source anywhere that shows he has a signed contract, but he isn’t holding out. He played last night vs the ducks and scored 2 goals. The only thing I can think of is there must be some provision in the CBA. I don’t know, its a head scratcher and I can’t help but think Schenn is risking quite a lot by playing if he indeed doesn’t have a contract.

i dont see mayers going anywhere personally, i doubt any of our forwards are moved at this point in time.

    Poni Grabs Kulemin
    Blake Stajan Hagman
    Wallin Mitchell Stempniak
    Mayers Primeau Orr

    Kabby Komi
    Beauchemin Schenn
    XLB Finger

    Toskala
    Gus

Thats how i see our lines breaking down. I think alot of ppl expect Bozak and/or Tlusty starting with the big club but i dont know that it will happen. Basically these are guys that fit the top 6 role that RW has been talking about, they dont want them up here to play 3rd or 4th line minues. However Stempy, Poni and Kulemin can all play on the 1st 2nd or 3rd line and still be relatively productive. I expect room to be made for Tlusty, Bozak, Stalberg and Rosehill next year. Probably in place of Stajan, Stempniak, Mayers and Primeau

    @Luke
I was thinking that, but I doubt it would ever happen. Too bad too. Brayden is like the exact player we need in our system to go with Kadri and Kessel. Imagine Schenn-Kadri-Kessel someday as a top line. That would be better then Lucic-Savard-Kessel, so maybe we might win a game (says Bruins fans)

Like I said earlier, I would offer up Ponikarovsky+Kulemin or Tlusty+White. Those three guys would really help in their push for the playoffs but I doubt they would be interested

It was Cote he fought. Sorry, I should have used his actual name first befor my pet name for him Cotex.

Yes, it was too funny when Heartless wanted to start a fight then realized who he had on the other end of his arm and then just turned away to hide. Classic!

    @ Alex re: Komisarek
I saw one play, I think in the second or third period, where Komisarek pinched down low which lead to an odd-man rush the other way. However on that particular play, not sure if it is the same one you are referring to or not, Komisarek didn’t do anything wrong, really.
    .
He was beat to the puck, unfortunately. But the Leafs forward on the play, Stempniak I believe, was covering his point. It was Stempniak who then ALSO pinched on the blue line, instead of skating back to cover the defensive zone. Stempniak was also beat, and the Flyers were off to the races.
    .
I didn’t catch the whole game so I don’t know of Komisarek had any other misplays. If he did, hopefully it’s just rust, and something that he will correct once the season starts. But from what I’ve seen of him so far, I’ve liked.

I’d also like to add that Stempniak hasn’t impressed me much, as of yet. It’s mostly a lot of errors I’ve seen from him on the defensive side of the puck that have stood out for me.
    .
But then again, he’s never been strong in this area.

Hmm. To get Brayden Schenn, I’d actually offer up White plus any two prospects not named Bozak or (for now) Stalberg.
I think Brayden may be a Leaf someday, but probably not this year.

guys, i dont believe it was stempniak who was backing up komisarek at the blueline, im like 90% sure it was mitchell and not stempniak. i believe stempniak is playing ok but not outstanding. he will get 25-30 goals this year tho. hagman is proving himself once again and will be one of the leafs key offensive forwards this year (praying that he doesn’t get injured again)

and boys boys boys, look at the difference from last year! i know its only preseason but anytime a player gets hit hard by the opposing team, everyones ready to scrap!! im loving it. one play last night that really stood out was when poni got hit pretty hard and i believe it was exelby or komisarek that stepped up right away and everyone was fighting :D in my opinion, leafs are definitely making the playoffs

    @ Amoroq

Playing in the preseason without a contract is quite common actually. Perhaps not for younger guys. I’m not really sure. Older guys though do it all the time. Right now, there are guys all over the league playing without contracts. Just playing on invites or tryouts alone. Allison here for the Leafs. Betts in Philly, Sydor in St. Louis, I think Malholtra in SJ as well. Just to name a few.

Hay guys why dont we just let the kid play and see what he does with the players he has around him when he gets here. Kessel im talking about, the kids is the real deal, and we have enough talent to help support him when he gets here. , This team will be hard to play against and Im loven every min of every game ,, dont you guys have NHL centre Ice… to watch all the games..
