Growing Pains – Leafs/Pens Post-Game

In a game that oscillated between sloppy and entertaining, a young squad of Leafs forwards strutted their wares in a final attempt to crack the big club’s roster. If anyone was wondering how the typical Tank Nation extremists’ dream-team of solely youngsters would fare, they would need to look no farther than tonight. It was a mix of rookie mistakes, raw talent, and nerve-fraying moves. Here are some notes from this Tuesday night tilt, from the perspective of someone that was at the game itself:

-The Kulemin-Grabovski-Tlusty which was great last year is showing signs of rust. At times they have looked lazy while at others they have just looked completely out of sync. Outside of a few good collective shifts, Mikhail is the only player from this line currently deserving of a roster spot based on preseason play. Both Tlusty and Kulemin have flashed the skills that we all know they possess, but they need to display it more consistently. This trio did improve drastically as the game went on, which is promising.

-Rickard Wallin is a relative unknown that many of us have been trying to pencil into the lineup. To be frank, he looked to be a step behind the play at times. His body language at times (which may not be observable on TV) indicates that he is maintaining an awareness of the play surrounding him, but at this point it seems to be a bit more than he can handle. It will be interesting to see what role the coaching staff gives him going forward.

-Excitement to see the likely top-four was dampened almost immediately when the Penguins got off to a quick start. There is no doubt in my mind that the combinations Wilson has gone with will be solid during the season, but like the rest of this squad there will be some trial and tribulation involved. Tim, a friend of mine with quite the hockey mind, observed that Schenn in particular was off his game today. His trademark poise and patience under pressure was absent in a number of shaky passes and stuttering plays. Best blueliner of the night? Francois Beauchemin. Smart plays, a booming shot, and instrumental to the Leafs eventual victory.

As the preseason nears its final stages, you can expect the Leafs to round into form. Tonight we saw a goaltender and blueline that is still undergoing this process. We were also witness to the college kids giving it their all, and the sophomore young guns finding their stride.

As always, interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,
Nikhil

Bozak-Mitchell-Stalberg is what I wanna see for a 3rd line. Then if Bozak shows he’s got what it takes for top 6 mins then he can replace Stajan. But right now Stajan is ahead of him

    .
I’m excited man..I’ve never been so dedicated to the team – I can’t remember the last time I’ve followed the preseason so extensively!
    .
I am just not convinced that we are ‘set’ for 5-10 years, as you suggest. I still think we’re two top six players away, at least. But that’s to be expected; I mean hell, we’re only into year two of the rebuild!

That looks right to me. The only thing — Wallin is a mystery to me. So far I do not see how he replaces Moore who should have been re-signed in my opinion. Maybe Wallin has just not settled in?

    @Pug Nacity

I’m sure Wallin is talented for the type of player he is. Keep in mind, even if so, he must readjust himself to the North American game. 2 or 3 games played isnt enough. Personally though, he has not showed me enough to earn a roster spot, but over the next 3 or 4 games we should be able to see if he is worthy of taking a spot.

I want Bozak and Stalberg on this team, but is it wrong to have them playing 3rd line minutes? Shouldn’t they be in the top 6?

Backstrom could score 90 – 100 pts this year at only 22(?), It would take Grabs, Stalberg, Stephonvich, Kadri, and Schenn to get him.

BB and RW have said that Bozak and Kadri need to beat out Grabs or Stajan (1st or 2nd line center) to win a job and last night he said neither have stolen anyones job. That leaves me to believe that both will be sent down.

the role of a top 6 is different from bottom 6. Bozak will have to play in the top 6 to be on the team

It would be counter productive if RW or BB started making comments as to how impressive the two have been. They need to keep them working hard and playing like their lives depend on it.
It would be hard to say Stajan and Grabs have beat out Bozak and Kadri cause they haven’t even come close to the two kids yet. All four are playing tonight and to me… Stajan and Grabs need to produce. When two kids come to camp and put on a show like Kadri and Bozak have, the vets need to step up also. Lets see what happens tonight. This is a new year and with entitlement not in the Leafs vocabulary anymore sending the two kids down without the vets performing would be hypocritical.

    Blake- Grabo- Poni
    OPEN – Mitchel- Stemp
    Mayers- Primeau- Orr

even if your replace Mayers that will probably be with Rosehil. So on that line-up can someone please explain to me how we are apparantly going to have Tlusty, Stalberg, Bozak, Hanson, and Wallin. How is it that the arguably one open spot is going to fit 5 guys? People on here need a second to step back and stop engraving the cup. Stalberg and Bozak are not going to be on the first line, most of these kids are going to be in juniours, and the one or possibly two that do make it arent going to be the deciding factors on this team. Maybe in a couple years but we should probably SEE THEM IN THE NHL FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!! my god, “superstars” that have barely seen ice in the NHL i just dont get it sometimes.

its not that they have to be on the top 2 lines…but the way brian burke builds his teams theyre not the right players for the 3rd or 4th lines. ALSO, with deeveloping players, unless they get a certain amount of ice time theres no use for them being on the team. Might as well send them down and get 1st line minutes on the marlies than wasted on the third line up in the show

Your right, but didn’t BB say that he’s not sure if he will be able to have his bottom 6 “plumbers” this year like he would want? Indicating maybe a top 9 and bottom 3? Just throwing it out there.

For the record. I think we need Hanson Bozak Stalberg to be a line…they seem to be the type that can really punch some energy into a team…be that on the marlies as the first line or on the leafs as the second or 3rd who knows.

I am not sure what the difference is in ice time for a second versus third line. It may be advantageous to bring in (what I like to call) the Whiz line and forget plumbing for now. In fact, the third plumbing line idea is probably outdated. I would prefer a third energy line as TrevorE noted.

I was coming across those who say how you cannot rebuild and make the playoffs all in one season?

So, how is it Toronto can unload one of their vets and still make the playoffs?

Now, this deal was made way before the cap-era but in Cliff Fletcher’s first go-around in Toronto, he of course acquired goaltender Grant Fuhr.

What people forget is that because of the emergence of a young-budding netminder in Felix Potvin, Cliff was able to trade away Fuhr to a team in need of a #1 goaltender like the Sabres. In return, Cliff got Dave Andreychuk, Darren Puppa AND a first round pick.

AND, this was in the same season (’92-93) the Leafs qualified for the playoffs for the first time in two seasons.

NOW, I am not saying Burke will get that return for a player like Toskala. But, if Gustavsson outplays Toskala, then certainlu Burke WILL move him for whatever price and still have a solid tandem in Monster and MacDonald.

But these types of deals only happen if players like Bozak, Stalberg and Hanson can take jobs away from vets on expiring contracts like Stempniak and Poni.

I could live with Bozak, Stalberg and Hanson as a 3rd line as they seem to be good checkers as well which a third line is typically used for.

However I don’t think they will start with the big club. I see lines :

    Hagman, Stajan Blake /then Kessel
    Poni, Grabo, Kulimen
    White,Mitchell, Stepniuk
    Orr, Primeau, Rosehill or Mayers

    Defence
    Komisarik, Kaberle
    Beauchemin, Shenn
    Xelby, Finger
    MVR

    Goal
    Toskala
Macdonald to strat as backup then monster after some games with the Marlies

actually I ten see during the year Burke moving, Stepniuk (after Kessel comes back), Mayers and MVR or Finger which would mean White would drop back to play D, Blake would replace Stepniuk and Bozak would move to Centre on third line with Mitchel moving to the wing.
    So

    Hagman, Stajan, Kessel
    Poni, Grabo, Kulimen
    Mitchell, Bozak, Blake
    Orr, Primeau, Rosehill / Mayers

White slides into replace Finger or MVR
