Leafs-Sabres Post Game: Comeback Kids Fall Short

Ed. Note: Meet Daniel Santos, the newest member of the MLHS blogging team. Daniel serves as the Editorial Coordinator for The Score, and formerly blogged about the Maple Leafs for The Score’s “Six Pack.” Welcome, Dan.

Well, the comeback kids couldn’t do it tonight. Unlike last night against Pittsburgh, The Leafs couldn’t overcome a slow start tonight and fell 3-2 to the Buffalo Sabres.

I know it’s just pre-season, but the slow starts are starting to concern me a little bit. It seems that the Leafs need to be down a pair of goals to finally get in the game. I hope this isn’t a trend that’s carrying over from last year’s team. They need to show more urgency as soon as the puck drops. But since it is the pre-season, we’ll turn the other way…for now.

Here are some of my thoughts on some of the individual performances tonight:

- Garnet Exelby brings the ‘pugnacity, testosterone, truculence and belligerence’ that Brian Burke desires, but he didn’t have a strong game tonight. He made numerous mistakes, including a bad pinch that eventually resulted in a goal, he coughed the puck up in his own end a couple of times and just plain fell over on a Sabres rush in the third. However, I haven’t seen that much of him yet, so I’ll let him off the hook.

- Tyler Bozak didn’t look as good without his usual ‘frat line’. He made one nice pass to Grabovski on the tail end of a power-play, but didn’t create much offence otherwise. Ron Wilson re-united him with Stalberg and Hanson in the third, but they weren’t able to generate much in their few shifts together. However, Bozak did make a great defensive play in front of the Leafs’ empty net.

- Jiri Tlusty got a nice little break on his penalty-shot goal. Hopefully, he can build on it as he’s running out of time to make an impression on the coaching staff, especially since he can be sent to the Marlies without clearing waivers.

- I thought John Mitchell had his best game of the pre-season even before his third-period goal. He had good jump and was much more noticeable tonight than in the other pre-season games I’ve seen. His roster spot is all but secure.

- Joey MacDonald looked solid tonight. He kept the Leafs in the game after going down 2-0. I’m confident that he’ll be good insurance behind Vesa and the Monster.

All in all, not a bad effort against a Sabres lineup missing only a couple of key players. Up next for the Buds, a home-and-home starting Friday in Detroit.

While it is great fun to debate who goes where, based on his ability to actually see the players ( not only on the camera angles provided to those of us at home) and his experience I will trust BB to do the right thing. After all hes not Cliff the butcher

@kohma – agree with you on two things – #1 Van Ryn is still a valuable d-man, just had a bad run of injuries, but still an asset; and #2 – IF Burke can get a 2nd rounder for Stempniak, grab it now!
@ captain morgan: Agreed – Allison and Mayers? – if we could get a 7th round pick for either it would be a great deal! Deal or steal!

I like that but that still leaves a tough choices…I don’t know if I agree on the position of Poni…but where does he even go? I just don’t think Blake should be around…he doesn’t fit the under 30 mold were going for (for the most part anyways)

Lines I like (top three in any order):
    Kulemin-Grabovski-Hagman
    Ponikarovsky-Stajan-Blake
    Hanson-Bozak-Stalberg
    J. Mitchell-Primeau-Orr
    – and Rosehill as the 13th forward!

However, believe, because they still have options to be waived, that Hanson-Bozak-Stalberg may start with the Marlies and Mayers-Wallin-Stempniak start with the Leafs – hopefully I’m wrong!
Kadri to Junior – Tlusty to Marlies! Kadri will be some kind of player next year, won’t he?

No questions that Kadri should go down IMHO. Someone made a point earlier in this long list that even if it’s just to push his contract one extra year later. It would allow us some more room under the cap when we might be ready to really compete.

Plus he gets KILLED on the boards, he’s like a rag doll out there. I know everyone jumps to weight right away and compares him to others that way about the same but weight doesn’t always = strength. (someone pointed that one out too)

Wallin is now the 13 th F seems to me given Wilson’s comments–pk duty

question marks–will they waive Mayers and replace with Rosehill?
mayers might start on injury reserve and so R will start
but burke will try to get say a 4th or 5th for him

—what to do with Stempniak?–If BB can find a home for him, Stalberg will
    replace him

I think Bozac starts Oct 1….maybe Stemp,Mitchell, Bozac as 3rd line

Nice to see some voices of reason in this comment thread – some good debates. Almo89, I agree with your lineup thoughts – though I think (and hope) at the first sign of any hiccup from the ones penciled in, they get benched and Bozak and/or Stalberg move in (and/or possibly Tlusty). But let that lineup see a few real games before passing judgment – not based on preseason.

Why do people keep putting Blake with Stajan, it is not going to work.

I am starting to believe Blake will be thrid line with Mitchell and Wallin, with Stempniak givin a chance to play with Stajan and Hagman until Kessel is ready, if he is scoring then he slide down with Mitchell and Blake and Wallin knocks Primeau or Mayers out to the Press box. If Stempinak is he is shown the box or sent down and they won’t care if he is snapped up. So forwards look like this
    Lee Stempniak-Matt Stajan-Niklas Hagman
    Alexei Ponikarovsky-Mikhail Grabovski-Nikolai Kulemin
    Rickard Wallin-John Mitchell-Jason Blake
    Colton Orr-Wayne Primeau-Jamal Mayers

    Then with Kessel

    Phil Kessel-Matt Stajan-Niklas Hagman
    Alexei Ponikarovsky-Mikhail Grabovski-Nikolai Kulemin
    Lee Stempniak-John Mitchell-Jason Blake
    Colton Orr-Rickard Wallin-Wayne Primeau

    D

    Tomas Kaberle-Mike Komisarek
    Francois Beauchemin-Luke Schenn
    Ian White-Jeff Finger

With Garnet Exelby, Mike Van Ryn, subing in for poor play and injury

    My guess anyway

Hard to say about exact line combos… Kessel-Grabo-Blake might work too due to ridiculous speed.

Of course that line would have a sum total of approximately 1 hit on average per game.

No way the D should look something like this, as per what Burke said the depth chart was:
    .
    Kaberle-Komisarek
    Beauchemin-Schenn
    Exelby-Finger
    .
White hasen’t been playing all that well and he is way to small.. he looks like he’s somewhere else right now and besides Exelby is just so much more fun to watch!!

Kessel-grabo-blake will never work, there wouldn’t be a pass between the three of them, they would probably end up foighting eachother in the corners. Kessel needs to play with a center like bozak with another fast/smart player on his wing, enter stalberg/hagman…as for stajan and stempniak, hate to break it to you guys, but we have witnessed their max potential gents, it will not get any better than what you have already seen – and as another poster mention, if we ice the same line up as last year, with only the additions of komi and beauch, (as MANY of you continue to post) we no dont make the playoffs and end up giving boston a great 1st rounder….not to mention discouraging all the other new acquisitions (frat pack etc) from wanting to play long term for this team

I like alot of your lines and rosers guys. I hope Wilson agrees because thats what we need. I think Stempniak gets a legit shop till Kessel comes back, but hes first to be replaced if he doesnt put good numbers up.
    Hagman-Stajan/Bozak-Kessel
    Poni-Grabo-Kulemin/Stalberg/Tlusty
    Wallin-Mitchell-Blake
    Orr-Primeau-Rosehill
