Leafs/Wings Pre-Game: Gustavsson Debuts, Leafs Lineup

Jonas Gustavsson will make his much anticipated debut for the Maple Leafs in tonight’s preseason tilt against Detroit.  Coach Ron Wilson has indicated that he will be in there for at least the first period, but that the staff wants to break him in slowly.  If Toronto does not get barraged in the first twenty minutes as they have in recent exhibition matches, the Monster’s tenure may stretch to a period and a half.

The Swedish tender’s role on this team for the immediate future will likely be defined in this back-to-back with the Red Wings.  While the Leafs brass are saying all the right things with respect to the possibility of Joey MacDonald sliding into the position of Vesa Toskala’s backup, it would truthfully take an awful showing on Gustavsson’s part for him to be relegated to third-string netminder.  That’s not to take away from MacDonald’s excellent play in his brief time with the Leafs, but this is Gustavsson’s spot to lose.

Here are the lineups for tonight:

Maple Leafs Lineup

FORWARDS
Jiri Tlusty – Mikhail GrabovskiNikolai Kulemin
Viktor Stalberg – Tyler Bozak – Christian Hanson
Rickard Wallin – John Mitchell – Lee Stempniak
Jay Rosehill – Nazem Kadri – Wayne Primeau

DEFENCE

Carl Gunnarsson – Garnet Exelby
Andy Rogers – Jonas Frogren

GOALIES

Red Wings Lineup

FORWARDS

Todd Bertuzzi-Valtteri Filppula-Dan Cleary
Kris Draper-Justin-Abdelkader-Mattias Ritola
Brad May-Kris Newbury-Francis Pare

DEFENCE
Nick Lidstrom-Brian Rafalski
Niklas Kronwall-Brad Stuart
Brett Lebda-Jonathan Ericsson

GOALIES

    @ionsys
Kulimen and Tlutsy deserve to be there…Stemincrap does not, nor does Mayers….cut the losses now and give them away to someone who will take them!!

what I mean is, every player needs NHL time to season into the NHL player they are going to be, not every player needs more minor league time.

Morgan, I agree about Kulimen, Tlusty hasn’t impressed me too much. Stemp will get traded, Mayers is injured so we’ll probably have to take him out back and shoot him.

What an awesome game! Fans afterwards were even able to sneak in to the Kiss concert next door!
    .
Goose looked REALLY solid. Stalberg looks like he belongs in the NHL. Tlusty and Kulemin (and even Wallin) however do not look like they belong. Tlusty fell over several times without any assistance and looked useless out there whenever he had the puck. XLB also looked out of place. He’s a seventh d-man at best. Stempniak looks rejuvenated out there and Grabs was mostly disappointing tonight. Kadri could have been more effective had he been given real linemates. And what was with all the “hooking” calls tonight? I didn’t get to see replays but it looked like a lot of borderline calls at best.

    Here is what I am thinking is going to happen;
    .
We know that Grabovski, Stajan, Michell, Primeau will be at Centre.

We know that Blake, Hagman, Stempniak, Ponikarovsky, Orr and Wallin will be there on the wings.
    .
That is 10 forwards…. 2 spots missing plus a spare.
    .
So the coaches have to pick from Kulemin, Mayers, Tlusty, Bozak, Hanson, Stalberg, Kadri and Rosehill… understanding that at least two of those will play 4th line minutes.
    .
My guess is Kulemin, Mayers and either Tlusty or Stalberg.
    .
    Defense is easier.
    .
Komisarek, Kaberle, Beauchemin, Schenn and ????

Wilson says he may carry 8 Dmen to start (I think he will do to waiver rules).

So the eight will be picked from Van Ryn, White, Exelby, Frogren and Gunnarsson.

My guess is they don’t want to stunt Gunnarssons development, he goes down.
    .
Goal tending will be Toskala and either the Monster or MacDonald. Based on how the Monster plays tomorrow, if he falters, he starts some games with the Marlies first.
    .
Remember before over reacting to my choices that waivers come into play big time. The last thing The Burke wants to do is lose something for nothing….. he won’t be sending players down that have to clear waivers unless he really has to. (ie. they have tried, can’t trade this player and don’t want him on the team).
    .
    Thoughts?
    .
    Cheers

    @Scotlocks
I agree with everything you said. But that applys for Kadri. Bozak and Stalberg are both 23 and should be in the roster. Plan and simple they make are team better. That’s what it comes down to

Was at the game last night, and had awesome seats 6 rows off the ice. I was very surprised to see that the Joe was empty, with the exception 50% leaf fans. That was a phonemonal game to watch live.
I dont think the wings would have tied it up if Goose stayed in net the whole game. He covers the net so well and was on the ball last night, even in warm ups.
Most exciting play was at the end of regulation when Stalberg took the puck end to end and threw it across to Bozak, so close, even the wings fans behind us were amazed. Bozak and Stalberg should absolutely make the team. Hanson had a better game but needs some time in the A.
Kadri had another great game, but we all know he is getting sent back to the O.
Tlusty had an alright game, you could tell he was nervous everytime he touched the puck. but by the end of the game. Grabo, kulemin and tlusty started showing signs of some chemistry. I dont think they should write him off yet.(tlusty)
The most impressive player on the ice by far, was Beauchemin. It seemed like he was on the ice the whole game. I think this should be our next Captain
