Leafs/Sabres Post-Game: Toskalol

It may be righteous laughter because you’ve been saying it all along: “Toskala won’t bounce back this year”.  It could also be nervous laughter because you think to yourself: “no way he keeps this play up…right?”.  It may just be maddening, maniacal laughter as you cry out: “well we all knew this season just could not get off to a perfect start for my Maple Leafs“. Any way you cut it, there is no satisfied, back-slapping laughter celebrating the accolades of Vesa Toskala.  This is what you would have hoped for among the legion of Toronto supporters to start the 2009-2010 campaign.  Sadly, our Finnish tender has left us wanting.  Tonight’s 7-6 debacle against the Buffalo Sabres was just more of the same.

Here are some quick notes from this Sunday night shootout:

-Outside of tonight’s goaltending woes, you had to be happy with the offensive resilience of the Leafs.  Ron Wilson tried out some new line combinations in an effort to get Nikolai Kulemin going while seeing how Viktor Stalberg fit in on Grabovski‘s wing.  The top six (Blake-Stajan-Kulemin, Hagman-Grabovski-Stalberg) had a good showing overall.  It is clear that Niklas Hagman is a great complement for pretty much anybody with his hockey smarts and excellent puck-handling skills.  It will be up to the coaching staff to iron out the specifics otherwise.  Regardless, with another solid outing, Viktor Stalberg has to have a roster spot with his name on it.

-The third line of Wallin-Mitchell-Stempniak was one of the best on the ice tonight.  The trio buzzed around all night long with impressive success, including a pair of goals from the oft-criticized Stempniak.  Ron Wilson showed confidence in this group as they were out late in an effort to tie up the game.  The chips are falling in a well-defined pattern at this point, and you can be fairly confident the third line will look something like this come Thursday.

-The story of the night, tomorrow, and the coming days will be Vesa Toskala’s game (or lack thereof).  Management will take the path of least resistance in this case and give Toskala his fair shake.  This will involve giving him full command of the Leafs goaltending ship.  We can only mention that “he clearly has the skill” so many times before the claim becomes an empty motto of the downtrodden.  It is very simple: Toskala will have to start showing some results.  Unlike last year, where there were no suitable replacements, Brian Burke has done his job and brought in Gustavsson.  The Monster looks to be capable of ousting Toskala from his throne.  He will do so unless “VeTo” starts to play like a number one goaltender in the NHL.

With this firefight-finish to the preseason, the excitement will only continue to mount as October 1st approaches.  The Leafs have played an inordinate amount of games in the past few weeks, and are going to spend the next few days on a team-bonding retreat.  The last cuts will soon be made public, and we will finally get a picture of what the opening night roster will look like for the 2009-2010 Toronto Maple Leafs.

As always, interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,

Nikhil

Oh and one last thing on the Toskala front. I don’t want to hear from anyone, including RW about how Vesa needs time to get his game back as he’s coming off of surgery…. Gustavsson just had a heart problem and freakin’ heart surgery and he comes out and slams the door shut on every shot he faced. Enough excuses. At some point Toskala has to take responsibility and work hard to improve. RW and Burke talked about nobody’s job was safe but all they do is defend Toskala. He lets 7 goals tonight and he’s our starter 100%. No matter what Toskala does in net, he doesn’t take the heat.
    .
And all this crap about sense of entitlement was all hot air. All they did was put mostly unrealistic expectations on the young kids to unseat the ‘incumbents’. So why bother preaching all this if the ‘vets’ jobs were pretty much safe anyways??
    .
I’m excited about the prospects of they type of season we could and should have, but I’m not a fan of the contradictory comments and actions by the management.

@ Falcon, I admit, I’m wrong on that front… but it also goes to show the first round is not the be all and end all… Stalberg shows more promise than Tlusty and he was a first rounder, 13th overall, same draft.
    .
The point is, the draft is a crap shoot. You could draft a guy dead last that is better than a top 5 pick. We got a guy who has proven he can hit 40 goals in the NHL in Kessel.

Botttom line… what is a worse medical situation to have? A groin injury, or a heart problem??
    .
Besides some fundamental issues already described (too deep in the net, going down too early, etc.) Toskala’s problem is exactly what Burke said a goalie needs to have, mental toughness… if he fears he’s gonna get hurt, his play will suffer (like it is) and he eventually will get hurt again. Man is what he thinks about most.

@Falcon, I’m not getting upset or anything lol, it may seem that way… I’m just tired of the excuses with Toskala… the surgery thing was a good excuse until Jonas got a heart issue that put him in the hospital, had heart surgery and nobody even makes a big deal out of it like they do Toskala. they are enabling Toskala. he knows he has an excuse, cause management has bought into it. At some point, the excuse book has to be thrown out the window.

@ GB… yeah groin injuries are career killers and heart issues aren’t? you’re right, heart issues are life takers, do we need to start listing hockey players who have died due to heart arrythmias?. But Jonas obviously doesn’t get as easily fucked up mentally as Vesa, and doesn’t see the need to make excuses.

@Ron Guillet: Agreed. It was a horrible game and not just for Vesa, lots of defensive blunders as well, especially when we lost Komi and were playing with a shortened bench. A lot of these guys are probably exhausted playing so many games in a row.
    .
On the positive side (if people want to read into the preseason so much) the Leafs finished with a 6-3 record which is 12 out of a possible 18 points or .67 points percentage…the equivalent to 109 points over a regular season (don’t freak out, it’s just pre-season). In each of the three games they lost they lost by only one goal. Also, even after that atrocious game, our GAA for the preseason is 3.0, which is pretty bad (prior to that game is was like 2.7) but last season our GAA was closer to 3.6. Last year we also had an average of ~3 goals per game but over this preseason we had an average of 3.67 goals per game.
    .
I’m not saying these numbers will translate to the regular season, quite the opposite, I’m saying people need to take what happens in the pre-season with a grain of salt. The schedule is far more intense (9 games in 12 days!?), you have far more line juggling going on which makes it harder to gel with any particular guy, you have more 3rd and 4th liners (or future Marlies) getting significant ice time and on the flip side of things a lot of the time you aren’t playing against starting goaltenders or the best players on the other team. So people need to relax, look forward to Thursday when the games actually matter…then feel free to engage in knee-jerk reactions, because at least those losses are costing us points!

    Folks,

I dont like to flame our guys but this came to mind. I was reading that part of the Leafs bonding trip to Huntsville was to participate in daily Paint ball Activities.

Who wants to bet that “Vesa won’t get a drop of paint on him”

    Cheers

    @canucksnaphook,
Schremp has good offensive potential, but his defensive play is virtually non-existent. I’m not too surprised that Quinn cut him, especially from a roster that is already loaded with players of similar style. He is yet another one of those prospects that need to play in the top six. If BB was to pick up Schremp, it would most likely be at the cost of a roster spot for a guy like Stalberg. Otherwise, he would have to clear waivers yet again for him to go down to the Marlies, and risk having him snapped up by another team (and pay half of his salary) during re-entry. I doubt that BB picks him up.

    @ NewfieDave,
Hahaha, knowing Toskala’s luck, he re-injures his groin trying to dodge paintballs..
But in all seriousness, let’s give him a handfull of regular season games before we ‘sacrifice him to our Gods’…
    .
Remember how good he was before they shut him down last season?

    @ Wook,

Re-entry waivers is when someone gets sent down and then recalled. The only way Schremp would be on re-entry waivers with the Leafs is if they claimed him and successfully sent him to the Marlies and then recalled him. The LEafs wouldn’t be on the hook for half his salary if they claimed him and tried to send him to the Marlies but had someone claim him.

    Burn,
I think his point was that there’s no point going after Schremp unless he’s guaranteed a spot on the roster. Because almost certainly, someone would claim him at half the price when we decided to recall him.

    @ Luke,

How good was he last year before they shut him down?? He had the 45th worst GAA and 44th worst S5 (out of 47). He was absolutely terrible last year before they shut him down. If he’s not vastly improved from that we are in big trouble.

I agree about Schremp. I see no need in him, especially since there isn’t room for guys like Bozak, Hanson and Tlusty. Just pointing out the facts about re-entry.

    as a complete aside…..

there is a new egg commercial featuring olympians Kim St. Pierre and Hayley Wickenheiser. After showing them on the ice making some moves they then show them in a diner eating.

here is my issue: Could they not have made them up a bit? Holy Shit they both look like they combed their hair with a hand grenade !! I know the rigors of showering can dry out the hair, but come on…..it made me never want to eat eggs again !

    Haha.

    @Burn,
Right. He is on a one year two-way contract, so there wouldn’t be any cap hit for him to play with the Marlies (i.e. there wouldn’t be any need to get rid of him). The guy is obviously looking to play in the NHL, so he wouldn’t be happy with the situation. Having said that, if an understanding could be reached between the parties that if he performs well for the Marlies, he would be given a much better shot at making the team next year (with a new contract of course) than that for the Oil. If so, it would be a steal for the Leafs to add a former 1st rounder into the cupboards virtually at no cost.

    @ Wook,

They already have 49 of their 50 contracts spoken for. If they pick up Schremp they would be maxed out, which is not a good idea. (Kadri doesn’t count because he’s back to junior). Plus the Marlies are pretty full of talent. If they brought in Schremp and he cleared waivers to go down to the Marlies then they’d have to drop a young guy that they like, like Scott or Slaney or Mitchell and so on to make room for him. All in all there is no point in grabbing Schremp. If he has a bounce back year(he was terrible last year) then maybe we could offer him a contract next year, but not now.
