Joey MacDonald on Waivers
Just a quick update: Joey MacDonald has been placed on waivers with the intention of sending him to the Marlies, meaning that Jonas Gustavsson will in fact, be with the big club to start the season.
Also, Jiri Tlusty, Nikolai Kulemin & Tyler Bozak are not expected to play Thursday versus the Canadiens, according to Ron Wilson. Still no word on who else is going to down to the minors.

@ GinOshawa good points though, and with the vets having contract years the pressure will be on all year cause they are playing for jobs and more money
September 29th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
@obeleaf.. not only that.. what can you expect if you are cut in your final year of a contract? they are presured.. not only that but the fan base whats the kids.. if for nothing else but change and the hype?

@IBLeaf, I did not come out and trash the entire team, there are just certain players that I have been watching more closely because of their shitty play last year – all I want for this team is success and I do not see that with a lot of the current roster, you can disagree and I’ll respect that, but I do not respect being told to leave the site and that I’m an embarrassment, that’s the kind of talk that warrents a request to leave this site, my frustration lies with the lazy players not with the fans, and the reason I come to this site and no other is because for the most part you can actually discuss leafs here – I dont think the guys I mentioned earlier deserve another shot (maybe poni, I was a little harsh when I included him) they have been with the club for a couple years (stajan more than a couple) and we’ve been a losing bunch since…I don’t think I would be so pig headed on this topic if the young guys didn’t really impress this preseason and I understand the “showcasing what we have” but lets face it guys, we’ve witnessed all the potential from last years group with the exception of a few and its time to turn the page on the leafs of old
for the record, your lines from earlier:
Hagman-Stajan-Poni
Stalberg-Grabs-Blake
Stempniak-Mitchell-Wallin
Orr-Primeau-Rosehill
Komi-Kabs
Scheen-beauch
Finger-White
Tosk,Goose
stajan on #1 line…just saying…lol
Listen I dont post too often anymore because of this, and my intentions were not to get into it with someone the way we have, I am as excited about this season as anyone here but what gets me excited is knowing that we finally have depth to push some of these vets and am hopeful that with time the players that deserve to play will play and the team as a whole will be better for it…if I’m worng about the guys I called out that’s fine and I’ll admit it if it happens as long as the team is better and the entitlemnet era is finally over.

Is it Thursday yet ,cant wait to see some meaningful hockey again
September 29th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
@Peter…you are over the top..sorry and i know it is with reason… as i have read the posts here too.. but see above… the old school players have a 2 week period to prove themselves as per RW.. then there it is no holds bared…atleast that is what RW says…the vets deserve to have a chance.. in pre season it was all young kids.. he left off all the vest so he could see what the kids could do. he sees what the kids have and now it is the vets time to show what they have.
if the vets do not have what it takes then they are gone… or RW?BB are liars..

Having my hockey draft tomorrow night,Im taking Stalberg, anyone agree this guy gonna
score some goals this season.
September 29th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
I took the Monster in a late round pick… it was sick lol. I did think about Stalberg, but he will be available anyways on waivers.
September 29th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
@Gino, I know Im over the top, but sometimes a complete overhaul is necessary, its been 4 (5 if you count the lockout) years that we havent made the playoffs, the last thing I want during th erebuild (albeit a fast rebuild) is to miss the show again and give boston a nice pick – I know the preseason was to see what they had in the young guys, but when the vets were given the ice time they didnt do much with it, even during the ast 2/3 games, especially the last vs sabres, that was sloppy hockey froma group of seasoned nhlers
@ 2 mins, I picked him up late rd too, gonna go check for stalberg now lol
September 29th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
If Stajan going to be our #1 centre, playing with Stalberg and Blake, then Kessel he will definitely put up 75-80 pts. These guys will score goals with there speed,he just has to give them the puck.
Stajan is pretty good at that.
September 29th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
@Peter..I agree..what we have is not good enough..but we cannot just dump the whole team.. i wish we could..but i think RW/BB are looking at bringing in a few players at a time and working them into the system.. what we will see is players being called up to fill wholes.. one here on there and slowly having the kids take over…but not start with the kids…

Did anyone hear Berger on HockeyC at noon talking about the Leafs bonding in Huntsville.
He asked RW what he learned from the exercise.Wilson said that Blakes first kiss was his
cousin.I think Berger should be sent over to Siberia somewhere with the Kostitsyns. He must be
gay.

@ all the Stajan trashers.
Stajan is a great 3rd line centre and there are a lot of teams that would love to have some depth up the middle. Those same teams have a number 1 and 2 centre something the leafs have rarely had. With Sundin gone it was a process of elimination to see who would fill that void and Stajan did it admirably.. Should that mean that he has earned the label of a number 1 centre…. no, but he shouldnt be labelled as shitty either.
As of today Stajan is better than Bozak… By this time next year that probably won’t be the case.
As for the comments that grabo is on a short leash.. Are you kidding me… You don’t sign a kid who is going into his sophmore season with his offensive upside to a 3 year 3 mill contract and have him on a short leash…please
September 29th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
@TKO
Agreed about Grabo. Saying he should be on the trading block or that he is next to be sent to the minors is nuts. Kid has heart and skills.

@ Jordan – loved your proposed line-ups posted earlier – hopefully that is what we go with, but somehow doubt it.
Thursday night? It’s all about goal-tending! I’m convinced that we have a better team than the Habs – but if we don’t get quality goal-tending, it will be to no avail! Have been the biggest Toskala fan for the last two years, but after the other night (which was a repeat from last year)when he was down early, played back in the crease and did that 360 on the wrap around – well I’m ready for Gustavsson! Injury – forget it, the time has come to play.
If Toskala has a great game I will be the happiest man in the world – I don’t care about save percentage or GAA – he just looked completely lost the other night! Nice guy though! Guess we should give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he has personal problems? Who knows? Besides we can’t start Gustavsson at home – have to wait to Saturday and feed him to AO, Semin and Backstrom!
I predict that “the monster” will win the Calder! And our Leafs make the playoffs!

In case nobody mentioned it, Joey Mac cleared.

I see most guys have Bozak IN the lineup and have Stempy OUT..
I can see that if you were comparing the 2 players without considering all the other factors involved.
*
1. If we send Stempy down, he can get claimed off waivers going down OR when being recalled by the team and we WILL HAVE TO PAY half his salary. He is a 26 year old who has scored 27 goals earlier in his career with St.Louis. He hasn’t showed much of that last season, but has looked real good this year so far. Any team would take that chance to claim him. This would hurt the Leafs short term and long term.
*
Short term: one less back up player available due to injuries. Whereas keeping Bozak backing up Stempy, he does not need to clear waivers when Bozak is recalled. So why risk it.
*
Long term: Next years sal cap would be affected if Stempniak was claimed. Look at how for the next 5 MORE YEARS, Tuckers 1 million dollar cap hit will affect us until 2013-2014.
*
Bozak hasn’t played at the NHL level like Stempy has. It would be nice to HOPE Bozak does well at the NHL level. but it’s no guarantee… I’m sure we were just as high on Steen and Coliaccova after 2 seasons but players always don’t reach their level of expectations. ..Care to mention if Bozak was that good as we all think he will be wouldn’t a single GM had drafted him ? Wouldn’t a single GM had found him in the 7th rond of his draft year? Ok Martin St. Louis was never drafted..right but that is a Long shot to say the least.
*
Here’s to Hope Bozak is that good…but what is the hurry to putting him in the opening line-up.. His time will come..
