Mats Calls It Quits
Well, it’s official .. the most prolific scoring Maple Leafs player is officially retiring:
Read the TSN story here
When should the Leafs honor him? Tomorrow night? The 13th game this season? Should they at all?

@ captain morgan Mats will put if off for a year and then decide to have the ceremony in Vancouver.

From Leafs lunch:
– leafs to rotate 3 a’s between Komi, Kaberle, and Beauchemin
– Leafs will probably name a Captain on Dec 1. and it looks to probably be Komi by words of Wilson
– Macdonald has cleared waivers
– Bozak and Tlusty both confirmed to be going down.
September 30th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
I always enjoyed Redlight Raycroft
September 30th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Tlusty-Bozak-Hanson are going to rape in the marlies

I’d like to add my two cents in here….when Matts first came to theLeafs, he was willing to go through a wall for the team…he had many great seasons here and the stats stand for themselves…we do not know what was promised to Matts when he signed the NTC deal, so we shouldn;t comment on it…in the later years here he seemed to get complacent and it may have to do with the crummy Leafs managment…but today is his day and we should celebrate it with him and continue the debate another day!!!
On another note, we should contact him to see when he wants to be honoured…maybe October, uuuuummmm, no make it December, uuuummmmm no, that doesn;t work with the family now….uuuummmm February, no, no, no, I don’t like to fly then….maybe next year, but maybe not….ummmm, I need time to make a decision I’m happy with, so I need time!!!! LOL

@Almo89: I don’t gauge overtime goals to be an indicator of leadership, just that he was an offensive force who got the tap from the coach during overtimes. Theo Fleury has 11 career overtime goals and Sergei Fedorov 15, neither would be considered leaders in my books.

Sorry….it told me I was bad before and wouldn’t accept my post?????? LOL
September 30th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
If I knew Stajan was our #1 center, I would have rather watched Sundin take that role for the year to be honest
September 30th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
Don’t the Leafs usually have 3 A’s every game? How can that rotate between only 3 guys?
.
Not sure how I feel about Komisarek being the new captain… I don’t know… Just doesn’t feel right.
.
Maybe because he was a Hab not that long ago?
.
Bozak will be back in the NHL in no time. Glad to see MacDonald will be starting with the Marlies. Sucks if we ever need to call him-up/lose him on re-entry waivers.
September 30th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
One thing I’ve gathered from the crowd’s responses thus far is that the hate towards Sundin has cooled down considerably. I am relieved. Clark and Gilmour were great captains for the Buds, but their three year terms do not belong in the same league as the eleven seasons that Mats devoted to this team through thick and thin. We will be lucky to find another captain of his stature in our life time.
September 30th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Before people start giving me death threats, I will point out I’m joking ans trying to get the Stajan lovers going lol
September 30th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
I still think Schenn can be named captain POSSIBLY next year, but how long can a team go without having a captain? Especially a team that is going to push for the playoffs, its important to have a designated leader.
.
I think some people may not feel right about having Komisarek be our captain, not beacuse he was a Hab not long ago but bc he’s new. We still don’t no him/warmed up to him. But from what the Habs have said in interviews I can tell that he’s a great guy and a good leader. There’s no doubt that he’ll become a fan favourite.
September 30th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Aww Farfignugen!! I drafted him in the last round of my fantasy draft last night…. ah well. I guess I’ll have to rely on Phil Kessel for my scoring.
Three cheers for drafting like a homer!!
September 30th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
@danvertising
yeah i agree with ya there about Komi, also Beau is a frenchmen and sure its racist but it would be weird having a french captain.
I dont think its Schenns just yet, he played great for us but he was the one shining beacon on the team, end of this year people will be calling for Stralberg to be captain. The captain i feel will reveal himself as will the one after that, it may go Komi than Schenn or Beau than Kadri who knows what the futur holds??
One thing i know for sure Stajan needs to be considered for that C!!
hahaha im trying to get people going just like Jordan.
September 30th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
Haha Stralberg is a good one!
September 30th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
Glad to see McDonald cleared waivers on way down to the Marlies. Does he have to clear waivers again if he’s brought up as an injury replacement ?
September 30th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Not for an injury replacement but if not then ya
September 30th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
@ Jordan. tks
September 30th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Mats Sundin, he was a great Leaf…. left on bad terms…. funny thing is this: if he waived his no trade he would have been called a traitor that ditched the Leafs… it was a catch 22….
.
BREAKING NEWS: Matt Stajan will now go by the name Mats Stajan, drop his jersey from 14 to 13 and will then be named captain!
September 30th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
y do we have to honor him soo soon. look how long it took to honor Clark and Gilmour. This guy is a selfish person. can’t picture myself wearing a difference jersey or being a rented player. make me sick everytime i remember that. the leafs payed him good money for his service in 11yrs. can’t even win any trophies. can’t even get any draft picks for this douche bag, so what if the picks r shit as long as we get something in return for him. look what Forsberg did for Phillies. Sundin is a bum
September 30th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
There are a lot of point a game players in NHL history.
A leader? No. Mats was The Muskoka 5 ringleader, entitled and comfortable with the status quo (where vets were played and overpaid regardless of how badly they sucked).
Selfish, regarding his fudged no rent a player plea.
In the playoffs was almost never the Leafs best player.
(unlike Belfour, Roberts, Thomas, McAuley, etc who raised their game).
The Carolina series – his arrival sank the Leafs who were playing their best hockey.
He picked up his one point a game, but did NOT make players around him better.
He did not have another gear to dial it up into (like a superstar would in order to dominate games).
Not charismatic on the ice or off, just a regular guy who was low-key, punched in, punched out. And bought a house with 7 bathrooms.
A star? I suppose if you mean a team’s top scorer and the guy who markets
soup and is the face of the Leafs marketing department.
But not a league, or all-time superstar of any kind.
He was well-compensated and earned more than any other Leaf in team history.
September 30th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
I have no time for any of you who hate Mats. He was a class act and (one of) the greatest Leaf(s) ever. How can you hate him for wanting to be a Maple Leaf? If any deserved a NTC it’s him.
.
Congrats on a great career and good luck, Mats. (As if you’ll read this)
September 30th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
As for his leadership? How the fuck do I know, or how would any of us ignorant pricks know? His team mates seem to think he was a good leader. I’ve never heard a coach or a player say anything close to bad about him. Fuck JFJ and the fickle fans who eat their own.
September 30th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
One of the classiest players to ever pull on the Blue and White and one of my favorites of all time.
Mats Sundin will be here on another occasion to have his number 13 raise to the rafters and I don’t doubt soon to be honoured as an inductee in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Good Luck Mats maybe a job in the organization down the road and I will always remember you as Leaf.
September 30th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Phil Kessel comes 10 years too late, Anyone think Sundin would have scored 100 pts with Kessel on the wing? As far as the Hall of Fame, not before some other greats who won something, like a Con Smythe, Leading Scorer, never even got to a Stanley Cup Final…As Far as Captain, Not ahead of Sittler, Gilmour, and Keon. I believe all three of them reached the 100 pt plateau at least once in their careers. Good Luck Mat Sundin in your future retirement, you were a very good Leaf player, but couldn’t lead any team other than Sweden to a Championship, Go to their Hall of Fame, we have higher standards.
September 30th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Sad to see Mats go but it was “his” time. I’m glad he didn’t take long to make his decision though…lol.
.
I hope he signs a 1 day contract so he can retire a LEAF!!!
.
I also hope that he finds his way back to the game of hockey someday soon.
Analyst…? (TSN, CBC, Leafs TV…)
Scout…?
Special Assistant to GM…?
I hope Burke brings him back to be a Leaf once again…to be part of the front office/organization.

God Bless Mats Sundin. He gave everything that was asked, except the decision to waive the NMC. Yes, it would have helped restock the Leafs, but within the M5 he was the most deserving. The haters can go to hell. It’s time to celebrate a truly great Maple Leaf.
October 1st, 2009 at 11:02 am
sundin’s a load of shit…wont be missed in leaf land….
October 1st, 2009 at 11:09 am
Prediction: a conflicted Mats will miss the raising ceremony:
He’ll be stuck in his garage for 11 months deciding whether to take the Benz or the Ferrari.
“The Benz is cool. But I don’t know … what if I take the Benz, and then I realize I should have taken the Ferrari?
Of course, I could also buy a new car to take to the ceremony! Or I could take a cab. Or a stretch limo. Bus or limo? What am I to do? Or better yet, the IKEA mini-bus can pick me up! Yes, that’s it! No, wait … “
