Gustavsson expected to start tonight vs Sens

Ron Wilson won’t tell us who’s starting tonight game, but Jonas Gustavsson left the ice first at today’s practice, meaning that he’s expected to start.

It’s hard to argue with Ron Wilson’s decision because of Vesa’s .571 save percentage on Saturday. However, Toskala is 6-1-1 with a 2.23 GAA in his last eight starts against the Senators. Also, he hasn’t lost in regulation in his last 15 games, but that stat is a little deceiving, as the Leafs have lost 8 of those games.

Nevertheless, it’ll be exciting to see how Gustavsson fares in his first NHL start.

Update:

-Gustavsson confirmed by Wilson as starter
-Kulemin in for “banged up” Primeau
-Mitchell fills in on 4th line
-Rosehill in for Mayers
-Exelby in for Finger

Looks like these will be the lines:

Stalberg-Stajan-Blake
Ponikarovsky-Grabovski-Hagman
Kulemin-Wallin-Stempniak
Rosehill-Mitchell-Orr

Kaberle-Komisarek
Beauchemin-Schenn
Exelby-White

I say we give these guys 2 more games (which will have to turn into 6 since we play two in a row next monday/tuesday), and then start calling up rookies and making some major trades. I know it’s only three games, but the weaknesses are just so glaring. Even McGuire couldn’t find anything good to say tonight…

It’s scary to look at the schedule and realise this team could head out west on the 24th and be 0-6-1! I mean I would have thought the Colorado game was an almost sure win before the season began… now, all bets are off!

Parros of the Ducks just TKO’d by Minny’s back-up enforcer, some college guy named Scott. Well at least got to see some pugnacity tonight.

Regarding the Taylor Hall pick, wishful thinking.

Preseason is meaningless as far as wins and losses… as we can clearly see.

Particularly when you send half the pre-season roster back to the Marlies. This roster can’t play Burke’s top six bottom six style. They have to ice a 4 line team, and have 4 sets of attackers consantly going up the ice with speed.

Ya know what I think is horse shit. Milan Michalek takes a stick to the face. Cries. The Sens send him to the room to get ‘looked over’ while Alfie scores on the penalty shot. Then, out comes Michalek on the very next shift, who skates around like nothing happened.

    Absolute horse shit.

The Leafs outta add that one to the ol’ playbook, dontcha think?

Schenn needs to work on his shot. It’s pretty pitiful watching Schenn put the puck on net from the blueline. Has he ever wound up to take a shot from the point?

In all the gloom and doom, there is a silver lining, Les Smurfettes lost.

BB was right on two points: no one is picking their teeth out of the glass, they’re too busy getting up from the ice, where they left part of their tailbone.

He also said his tough guys have to be able to play. Now if only he could acquire some tough guys…

Gustavsson held up his end, as expected. The first one even without the high stick most likely woudn’t have gone in had White not taken Gustavsson out of the play by sliding home…
    .
Kaby for the second game has gone charging into the crease behind Gustavsson to help be a goalie. I wish he would help in front of the net instead. (so does Gustavsson, but he would never say that to an “All Star” player.
    .
Our forwards look like a scared pack of girls out there. There are too many that just won’t engage with the opposition. What was the stat after the Stalgerg hit, somthing like 2 shots on goal after that hit up to the middle of the game?
    .
We have some potential scorers, what we don’t have is anyone up front surounding them with any balls. Is it just me, or has anyone else seen enough of Blake already this year?

Three players really stood out for me tonight…
    1. Gustavsson was solid. He made some big saves and didn’t have much of a chance on both goals. He still needs to gain confidence and learn to relax his nerves but considering all he is experiencing these days he is doing really well.
    2. Kulemin was really working hard tonight. I haven’t checked the stats yet but he must have had the most hits for the Leafs tonight by far. He is backcheching harder than ever before and his response to his demotion looks promising.
    3. Exelby once again really fucked up. He is the most overated player in the league IMO. I haven’t seen any hockey skills at all out of him and his ability to make tape to tape passes to the opposition is second to none.
I think a couple of forwards might find themselves in the press box for a wake up call and Bozak might get a shot very soon.

Gusto played well-deserves another start-he is much better than toskala although he played that penalty shot like a little girl.
    .
I will admit it…Stempniak was our best forward tonight. the problem is when Stempniak is your best forward we’ve got problems.
    .
White was our best defenceman-problem is when hes our best defenceman we have problems
    .
We have no toughness/heart in our top 9. BB knows it and this will be addressed.
    .
Rw has no idea who this team is supposed to be. He has no proverbial pulse of the bench. he seems lost, although there were some positive signs in this game.
    .
    lastly, please consider.

Exelby was a 6th d-man on one of the worst teams in the league.

Komisarek was brutal last year and seems to be still trying to find his game

Beauchemin is coming off a major injury and he aint playing with Niedermayer now.

could it be that there isnt that much more to offer with these guys? I hope not.

anyone concerned that this kessell deal aint too good at this point?

Eliminate Exelby’s give away and the fact our offense just didn’t play the way they normally can then I’m not too disapointed with tonights game. Clearly we all know our O is much more creative than they were tonight and I didn’t see Gustavsson have to stand on his head. So if we could bring our normal offensive creativity with speed and hard work we see most nights and couple that with the fairly solid defensive game we played tonight we have a winner. We just have to put the two together and I’m sure we will soon.
Much better to struggle now than after Christmas like most years.

    @ LT73

There was nothing wrong with Alfredsson taking the shot. Michalek lip was cut wide open and blood was pouring out. You don’t make someone in that condition take a penalty shot. He needed to get stitched up (Which is why he was back on quickly) and that meant he had to go to the dressing room.

Although what in the world was Exelby thinking?!

@Gary, You are not alone. We simply don’t have competitive and gritty forwards. It is an inherited problem from JFJ. I feel let down by the present GM, because he has not be able to trade for at least one or possibly two forwards in the off-season. Instead, for Kubina we acquired Exelby. Even that would have been alright, if he had shown any truculence or belligerence. Then our GM went on a limb and acquired Phil for two first rounders and a second rounder, when the rest of the team is not prepared. Last year the team played well because there was no pressure on it to make the play-offs. This year the self created pressure is on, and the effects are plain to see. Let me reiterate once again, that Chiarelli might not have enjoyed Bay Wtch as much as he may be enjoying Leaf watch.

The only bright spot so far has been the limited play of Gusto. BB get off your irascible Irish butt and find at least a couple of good forwards, fast.

I haven’t read everybodies comments but I am pretty sure it has got to be painful. My sympathy goes out to all die hard Leaf fans.
I have said this before and I will say it again:
The symptoms this team has is poor defence, goaltending, toughness, etc, etc.
The real problem this team has stes back to coaching and management.
1- The decision to drop Kadri, Bozak, and Hanson were poor decisions.
2- The ice time that is being given to Mitchell, Wallin, and Stempniak is wrong.
3- The decision to trade away your first round pick when Las Vegas has you in the bottom five is a colossal blunder and has put ridiculous pressure on a poor team.
The Leafs had something going n camp but they blew it up.
    Way to go Burke!!
