Is It Really This Bad?

You all know the record (0-5-1). However, has the Maple Leafs play thus far really warranted that record? Anyone who has watched all the games will probably say yes, yes it has. But what do the numbers look like?

Well, the numbers are ugly. I know you’ve probably heard most of these stats before, but here they are:

  • Allowed first goal in all 6 games
  • Outscored 10-2 in first period (-8 differential is last in NHL)
  • Last in goals against per game (4.67)
  • Second last in penalty-kill percentage (58.3)
  • Only team to use 3 goalies thus far

Doesn’t look good, does it? There is one positive stat though: the Leafs are 8th in the league with a 27.8 power-play percentage. However, they are 22nd in the league with only 18 power-play opportunites. In other words, they’re good on the power-play, but aren’t generating enough chances.

So even the one positive stat has a negative side to it. But the question is: How worried are you? Will they turn this around any time soon?

I’m worried that this team just isn’t as good as we had hoped or expected. My biggest fear is that the Leafs will end up in the draft lottery again, but with no draft pick. I’m sure this thought has crossed Brian Burke‘s mind as well.

As you can probably tell, I’m having trouble seeing any positives here. My hope for this season is really starting to fade. Is the return of Gustavsson all we have left? Or are we hoping that Kessel is the saviour? Or is one lucky bounce all that is needed to get things going? Help me out here. What is keeping your ‘beleaf’ alive?

Update: Brian Burke’s take

    Wilson has already stated that Bozak will be returned to the minors…he wasn;t bad last night, but not as good as he was in pre-season.
    Winning 47 and losing 30 in the next 77 is not impossible at all…hell if they went 3-3-1 to start, would you be going they need to go 44 and 33 and that’s impossible?? Let the damn team play and keep cheering…it will turn around!!

    Most of what you say makes sense (glad to hear Yek is not the source), except for the fact of freeing up space to resign Semin and Backstrom. Both are RFA’s next year as you know and losing the $4.875 mil cap hit from Nylander and taking on the $4.25 hit from Kaberle gains them all of $625,000. Sorry, but that won’t go far toward signing those two studs. The fact is, Washington will probably have to lose one of them to an offer sheet or via trade. Looking at their cap numbers and roster moving forward, they seem to be more in need of some stay at home D rather than a Kaberle type (both Green and Poti can move the puck). Let’s try the same deal with Beauchemin and or White (better cap hit), see if they bite….LOL

    How about we send Garnett Exelby their way for a bag of pucks?

    I was just thinking we don’t have a stay at home defenceman that isn’t grossly overpaid to offer them, when Schenn came to mind. But with bonuses, his cap hit ($2.9) won’t provide enough relief either, although it is the best we have to offer after Kaberle. BB has doled out so much in bonuses (the most in the league by far) that he had tied his own hands regarding cap space… Harvard trained, but failed math.

    If we will take back Nystrom’s $4.875 cap hit, I think they might even throw in some sticks with those pucks. Maybe (although a stretch), even some of Ovechkin’s sticks, so guys like Blake, Mitchell and Grabovski can actually hit the back of the net every once in a while… Oh, you mean it’s not the stick that makes the player?

    That’s an Ek special no doubt. The Leafs win heavily in that scenario and the Capitals pick up ANOTHER defenceman that can’t play defence? Doubt it. Consider the source.

    @ Neverlosehope
    I did think of Kaberle’s cap hit of 4.25 million next year, but if they really need to free up cap space there are 29 teams that will gladly work out a deal to take him off their hands. Nylander is immoveable unless the Caps want to essentially pay someone off to do so. Kaberle on the other hand can easily be moved and they would be able to recoup some assets in the process.

    Hey all…first post.

    YES it is time to panic – or at least to read the writing on the wall. With every game the Leafs lose, the more games over .500 they’ll have to accrue just to get to that magical number of 93 pts for the 8th and final playoff spot in the East. There is a very real possibility that if our beloved Buds can’t win at least 3 of the next 5 games, that the season – at least the Leafs bid for a playoff spot – will probably be over.

    It’s not Eklund, and as I stated it’s not a rumour. Two late first round picks is not a lot to ask for Kaberle. We’ve all seen how the Capitals fuel their offence, it’s tape to tape stretch passes. Kaberle would fit in perfectly. And it’s a Cap’s fan that proposed that they go after Kaberle that got me started on this.

    @Dylbot:
    You did however forget the fact that Kaberle has a No-Trade Clause, so in my books he’d be tougher to move for Washington than Nylander.
    Unless of course, like Heatley, Kaberle’s No-Trade-Clause becomes null and void after he waives it once and is traded.

    @ Schenn

    I don’t believe Crybaby Heatley’s no trade clause has become null and void, but could be wrong. It should have the moment he asked for a trade, but these spoiled brat multimillionaires want it both ways!

    @Dylbot

    So now we’re to believe that Washington might give up two firsts and a second for Kaberle (who in one scenario they have no intention of keeping) and virtually meaningless salary dump of .650 mil.
    I liked your first approach (which you have returned to in response to Puppets) that they covet Kaberle, it makes a little more sense, but not much. You see, every day needs a mix of puckmovers and stay at home defensemen, unless we can get rid of all the coaches and teams that love to play boring, trap hockey just to win 2-1. It ain’t gonna happen anytime soon.

    Thus Washington needs some solid stay at home guys (their defence is their current achilles heal), not more offense, they have an abundance of that, as the Leafs can testify to. So, even though I agree Kaberle would be a good fit with all their talent, I can’t see them giving up the farm for him when they have more pressing needs.

    Irregardless, I hope they make the offer and that Kaberle waives his no-trade in the hopes of having a shot at the Cup, because we are in bad need of some draft picks, and with or without Kaberle, this team will be crappy this year (@ Schenn), what’s a little more or a little less.

    It’s still Hockey Buzz which basically ensures it’ll be a false rumour. It’s actually a pretty ridiculous trade proposal that you sould ignore. Head over to http://www.japersrink.com and ask the educated fans there if they think that it’s a good idea.

    Whats pretty depressing is we could go over 10 games above .500 the rest of the way and still that wont be good enough for the playoffs.

    For example we could go 41-28-7 from here. Which would leave us at 41-33-8. That would give us 90 points. That likely still doesn’t get us in the playoffs and that was if we went 13 games above .500.

    This brutal start really handcuffs any chance.
