Leafs and Lightning Gameday

At long last, Phil Kessel will don the blue and white as he takes to the ice against the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight.  He has received final clearance (after undergoing a few tests on his repaired shoulder) and will be lining up alongside Jason Blake and Matt Stajan.  While the focus will undoubtedly be on Kessel’s performance in his first game, the Leafs as a whole must maintain their recent level of play and take a win from the visiting team tonight.

After a relatively successful road trip, Toronto returns home to the ACC on this Tuesday night matchup.  The Leafs are the only team to not have won at home in the NHL.  They will hope to carry over a much-improved offensive game consisting of puck control, pursuit, and savvy.  If you go back to the best batches of play by last year’s incarnation of the Leafs, you will remember they were characterized by a dogged game that saw a high number of shots on the opposing goaltender.  With the limited amount of high-end offensive talent on the team, they needed an offense-by-committee approach that was dependent on a massive effort each night.  Regardless of the inclusion of Phil Kessel to this year’s squad, the approach should be much the same.

Moreover, the Leafs will look to continue utilizing their lethal powerplay to their advantage.  However, if they hope to win consistently, they will need to improve their defensive zone coverage and more importantly, their penalty kill.  Phil Kessel will undoubtedly augment the offensive side of their game.  Yet he will not alleviate defensive woes that must be improved from the net on outwards.

On that note, Jonas Gustavsson will see the start tonight.  While Vesa Toskala did not have an “awful” start against the Canadiens on Saturday night, he let in the almost-trademark backbreaking soft goal that simply cannot happen.  Contrarily, Gustavsson has shown an increasing ability to make saves when his team needs it the most, keeping them in games and giving them a chance to win.  The lineup will look mostly the same otherwise, minus the inclusion of Kessel and the demotion of Jiri Tlusty.

Here is tonight’s lineup:

Forwards

Ponikarovsky-Grabovski-Kulemin

Blake-Stajan-Kessel

Hagman-Mitchell-Stempniak

Primeau-Wallin-Orr

Defencemen

Kaberle-Komisarek

Beauchemin-White

Exelby-Schenn

Goalies

Gustavsson

Toskala

As an aside, there was an edition of HockeyCentral on the FAN590 yesterday that referenced research done here on MLHS by our own Gus Katsaros.  We were disappointed by the lack of credit given to Gus for his insightful work.  Moreover, there was a clear lack of understanding of the research’s meaning and it was thus misrepresented.  To make matters worse, larger media outlets  included these figures in pieces of their own today.

Thankfully, we have made efforts to respectfully notify those at fault of the true source of this material.  Corrections have already been made, with more to come.  In a positive light, this is an indication that the mainstream media is finally realizing the level of intelligent discourse that happens on fan-driven sites like these.  We thank you, the aforementioned fans, for your continued support and fantastic discussion.

Cheers,

Nik

Wanna know what’s even weirder? Not only is Gus being ripped off, but apparently Howard Berger’s coined ‘Loserville’ as well:
    http://www.totalprosports.com/blog/index.php/2009/11/welcome-to-toronto-aka-loserville/
    .
I can only assume Berger somehow ripped this guy off.

How can you say Toskala wasn’t awful on Saturday? Did you not see that Metrpolit goal. One awful goal per game DOES an awful goaltender make.

    @ KeonClark
    Dude, save that for HockeyBuzz.

Glad Gusto is getting the start, I would have been extremely disappointed to see Tosgoala in there this evening. I am all about giving guys a chance, but he simply hasn’t been providing this team with a chance to win, and we all know they need all the help they can get.
    *
Excited to see the KesselExpress; not expecting him to light it up, but we sure could use an offensive threat of some sort. Even if he isn’t scoring 2 goals a night, his speed won’t allow defenders to cheat when he’s on the ice. He should also help out the powerplay with his shot. Let’s hope the Leafs can turn this thing around; it’s a home game against another struggling team that played last night, perfect recipe to start up a win streak.

I have to say that this site is great-some negatives some times, when guys get all down on everyone…other than that the blogs are intelligent and the posts are pretty imaginative as well (some highly)!!! LOL Most of it is intelligent chat with a little fun thrown in about the passion we all….The Toronto Maple Leafs and hockey!!

the whole line ranking thingy seems archaic to me. What ever happened to the whole ‘roll four lines’ talk that used to be all the rage?

I can easily see any of the first three listed combo’s taking the lead on any given night. What I don’t get is wasting players on the 4th line with 2-3 minutes a game.

    @Wendel
At least with that fourth line, you know that Wallin and Primeau will kill penalties, probably get 6-8 shifts and if the occassion arises, a 4 on 4 possibility. Plus Wallin will take over a spot on one of the other lines once the Leafs have a lead into the third period…so they will play more than the 2-3 minutes you are suggesting. If we do have an early lead, which we really haven;t all year, then maybe they will play more even.

I live in Ottawa, and obviously a leafs fan. Luckily i’m able to ‘catch’ streams online, but for tonight’s game i want to watch it on TV.
Normally on Sportsnet they black out leafs games, whether the Sens play or not.
Therefore, does anyone know where i could catch tonight’s game on the tele in OTTAWA?!

  • Bob is your uncle

@ lilgrnmen: Agreed. Clearing the puck should be easier, sometimes, with Kessel’ speed and the threat of a breakaway.

the challenge will be if Kessel plays poorly (which would be understandable) – will he sit?

I feel sorry for this guy – because I don’t think he has any idea of what he’s getting himself into AND because he’s saddled with Stajan and Blake.

    @ borjefan4ever

He won’t sit, he has a built in (and real) excuse. He needs to et himself into game shape and it will take time to settle in with his team and system. Or I could be wrong and he scores 15 goals in the next 10 games.
