Leafs/Hurricanes Preview

The Toronto Maple Leafs are back on the road tonight with a matchup against fellow Eastern bottomer Carolina Hurricanes. It will be a weekend of back to back games for the Leafs as they head home on Saturday to play host to the Detroit Red Wings (a game I will be liveblogging). But there is a significant question at hand for the Leafs heading into tonight’s game: Can a team aiming for the playoffs beat the worst team in the league?

While the Hurricanes do have two wins on the season, they lost their road game against Florida on Wednesday and thus put them at 14 games played with 7 points compared to the Leafs 13 games with 7 points. Leafs fans can now be pleased that Toronto, by simply doing nothing, managed to climb into 14th in the East.

What is interesting about the matchup is knowing that both teams are riding 4 game losing streaks, and that both teams are playing each other in the same position in which they have their only wins of the season: Carolina at home (2-3-1), and Toronto on the road (1-3-3).

Toronto will be shuffling Jeff Finger into the lineup for tonight’s game. After recent reports of Finger requesting to be sent to the minors if the team won’t play him, it’s nice to see the franchise doesn’t take those words lightly. Finger will be paired with Luke Schenn on the back end, so they can both look forward to 10 minutes of ice-time.

Ron Wilson says “it’s just a matter of time before everything comes together for us.” He later went on to state that “one of these times we’ll score and everyone will forget about what has happened up to this point.” That must be one helluva goal he’s talking about, because opening the season with just one win in October is a bit of a big obstacle to look past for Leafs fans.

Ron Wilson has yet to name his goaltender for Friday night’s game, but one would have to assume Vesa Toskala will get a start in one of the weekend games so Gustavsson does not have to play back to back, though I for one would like to see what the Monster can do under that pressure.

When asked about who would fit well as a perfect playmaker for Kessel, Wilson stated “I saw Adam Oates on the bench the other night. If we go back ten years, what Adam Oates could do for Phil Kessel, he’s the best passer I’ve ever seen.”

Interesting Team Comparisson Stat:

The Hurricanes have scored the fewest goals in the league (28) and the Leafs have allowed the most against (52). Carolina is second worst in the NHL with 3.64 goals allowed per game, while Toronto is among the league’s lowest-scoring teams at 2.38 goals per contest.

Team Breakdowns:

Powerplay: Toronto 3rd (25.9%), Carolina 26th (14.1%)
Penalty Kill: Toronto 30th (69.1%), Carolina 13th (81.1%)
5 on 5 Goals For/Against Ratio: Toronto 30th (0.54), Carolina 28th (0.55)
Faceoff Wins % Toronto 18th (49.1%), Carolina 29th (46.3%)

Komisarek may have had a great game, but he almost threw it away in the dieing seconds.

Beauchemin looks horrible and he has all year.

Burke has lost all credibility for me because of his accountability tirade, with no teeth in the follow up.

If there was any accountability on this team then Beauchemin would be in the pressbox and Gunnarson would be with the team.

… and don’t even get me started on the forwards.

I am pretty sure the Leafs have the worst team in the NHL by a LONG way. The worst part is that their high-priced defense is one of the worst in the league.

Maybe the Hockey Gods that Blake so graciously thanked for his goal last night might drop him a hint towards retirement.

    Notes on the game…
    -
The Leafs came to play. The Hurricanes controlled the 1st on pure adrenaline, but just as I suspected, the plucky Leafs just kept coming. I’ll say this about this team… They don’t give up.
    -
I’m not a huge fan of Blake. But I think he’s a good hockey player. He’s easily our fastest (or at least quickest) player, and when he’s playing well, he goes to the net, and gets a lot of chances. (I just don’t get all the Blake haters)
    -
Stajan has been exposed this year. He’s clearly lost a step since coming in as a promising rookie. Despite the additional muscle mass, he still plays like he’s 170 lbs. He’s just not competing hard enough, and I suspect he never will. His time has come and gone. I like the guy as a person, but he must go.
    -
Komi was a monster last night. What did he have like 8 hits? 6 of which were bone crushing? He’s in the zone now, and I think we should expect more of the same from him.
    -
WTF was Beauchemin thinking last night, when inexplicably, with 20 seconds left on the clock, he goes soft around the boards, right onto the stick of the canes player?! I seriously was so mad, I wanted to F’ing choke the guy. I’m sorry, he’s just not shown me AT ALL that he’s a smart player. That said, he does play the game hard, and outside of the horrible gaffe played a decent game last night.
    -
Johnny Mitchell looks so freaking close to breaking out. He could have had a few last night. His compete level is awesome. Wait till this guy starts developing a chip on his shoulder. He’s going to be a player to watch. My brother (big flames fan) watched the game with me and said, ‘Jesus, who was that guy?’ in reference to John Mitchell. He was like, ‘He’s big, he can skate, and he’s got the puck on a string’. I just chuckled to myself. I cannot wait for this kid to break out.
    -
I’m really warming up to Kulemin again. The kid plays hard. He finishes his checks, and he’s getting quality scoring chances. Is he ready to break out?
    -
Grabovski – To all the haters. F off. Seriously. This guy is a true competitor. He comes to play every night, and is arguably, one of our best defensive players. He consistently back checks, and when he goes into corners, his speed and quickness enable him to come out with the puck. He’s a player for sure. He hasn’t showed the flashes of brilliance he showed at times last season, but that may be a sign of maturity. It seems to me that he’s more focused on using his teammates.
    -
Damn Poni! You’re finally throwing your weight around! I was so pumped to see him nail a Carolina player against the boards (knocking him down). If he keeps this up, I might start being a real fan of the guy.
    -
Overall, I thought the Leafs were the better team last night. Gusto, once again, is the man. I just hope his body holds up (He’s like a stick man). We played inspired hockey, and I have no reason to believe we won’t win against Detroit tonight. My only concern is the fact that we’re playing at home, and the guys get so freaking nervous at home. Oh well, maybe tonight will be the night.

I was going to say, 5-7 mil is a little drastic at this point. Having said that, he is supplying us with some very good goaltending and at least a chance to win on a nightly basis. He is certainly showing us why Burke, Niewendyk and other were interested in him. It’s nice having a big goalie with great reflexes.
