Leafs Make Statement vs. Wings

The stats were not in Toronto’s favor. The Red Wings current streak was not in Toronto’s favor. Chris Osgood’s recent play was not in Toronto’s favor. But the Leafs came out last night with such, dare I say it, truculence that fans gave them a standing ovation for their efforts, as well as the Leafs first win at home this season.

Toronto won just their third game of the season, but has not lost in regulation in their last 7 games. Phil Kessel and Jonas Gustavsson have recently taken this team by the horns and are running with it.

“When you get solid goaltending it certainly helps,” said Leafs head coach Ron Wilson. “I think a big part of the game was a difference in the goaltending on both sides. Obviously having Phil Kessel in there as well, we just have a different feel.”

Jason Blake credits the game on Gustavsson’s shoulders. “He’s made some saves that I call game-changers. Right at the key times and they’ve been outstanding. Last night and tonight, he was the difference. It was good to see.”

Phil Kessel scored his first goal in the game as Jason Blake’s tip squeezed through Osgood’s pads. Kessel made sure it would go in by sending it the rest of the way. “It’s just an instinct thing,” he said. “You never know if a guy’s behind you. All of sudden I don’t touch it and then some guy hits it out of there — you’ve got to bury it. I’d expect anyone else to bury that one too.”

But Jason Blake was more than happy to see Kessel get the goal-monkey off his back. In fact, there was more than just Kessel’s goal to be happy about in the game. A total of 12 Leafs players registered a point in the 5-1 win, and the Leafs have never looked better than their recent play. Ian White, Jeff Finger and Phil Kessel each had a two point night.

“It seems to be that things are falling into place,” said 4th liner Wayne Primeau. “We’re finding ways to get points rather than finding ways to lose.”

On Friday night, Wilson demanded more piss and vinegar from his Leafs, and it has turned them into aggressive and content players.

“Everybody on the team wants to win and wants to be successful,” said Gustavsson. “We want the fans to be happy. When we started playing better, everybody’s going to be happy. If we can just continue like this it’s going to be a fun season.”

The Leafs even managed to improve on their specialty teams. They pushed their 30th overall penalty kill from a 70.7% success rate to 73.0%, and with John Mitchell’s deflection goal from a Phil Kessel shot (who looked like he was aiming for the stick) on the powerplay tonight, the Leafs are now atop the league with a 26.6% success rate.

Goaltender Jonas Gustavsson has clearly stolen the number 1 position with the club. He currently has a 2.60 goals against average and a 0.918 SV% on the year. In his last two games, he has a 1.50 goals against average and a 0.958 SV%. When is the last time you can recall a Toronto goaltender with stats like that?

Defenseman Mike Komisarek left the game with a lower body injury after missing his man on a hip check. Ron Wilson has confirmed it is not a serious injury, but he is now listed as day to day.

The Leafs will now prepare for their home game against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday, before traveling to Chicago for another original six matchup against the Blackhawks on Friday. Should the Leafs continue their current point streak, they could very well be knocking on the Playoff Door.

    @Peter
ya its a simple case of Leaf fans not actually watching Kessel play before, then relying on the media to make you decision. Kessel is an easy target for Canadian media because
    (1) hes american
    (2) hes had problems with people saying his bad in the dressing room
    (3) he KILLS the Habs, so all canadians fans hate his guts
    (4) Hes overshadowed by fan favourite big guys like Lucic
Truth be told though, he was Boston’s best player hands down. He still IMO hasnt played nearly ass dominent like I watched him last year, and hes not quite as quick yet, but thats obviously because he hasnt hardly played. I can WAIT to play the Habs with him.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FSXzXrYyMM
shows how far Habs fans go out of their way to bash him lol

@ Cameron i have to agree with ricer on that one. imo, i wudnt want to give up grabs, poni, kulemin plus a pick for schenn. thats way too much! id have to say the chances of that happening are 0.01% only because there’s a saying “Nothing is impossible” lol

Yea, really it’s not that bad, right Jordan? The Leafs are giving up 3 quality players, and a quality pick, for one prospect. 3 players capable of 20 or more goals, plus a 2nd round pick, would be more then enough to pry away a prospect if we were discussing this on any other fan website – but Leaf fans tend to be extreme in their evaluations. Players are either worth nothing or they are non-starters.
    -
And if anyone is going to debate it based on the return Tampa gets based on what they give up, take a look at Lecavalier’s contract and ask yourself a couple questions:
    -
1.) What 29 year old superstar has ever been worth 10 million dollars when he was 36 and 37 years?
2.) Would you pay Mike Modano, Mark Recchi, or Teemu Selanne 10 million dollars right now?

Well, as long as you think it’s stupid because we give up too much, then I agree with you. It is a lot to give up, but if the trade ever were on the table, it is an interesting idea to move out a whole line like that, because we actually have a whole line to replace them. Grabs, Poni, Kulemin out….Stalberg, Bozak, Hanson in.

It’s great the Leafs are winning and finding some chemistry. But keep your eyes on the prize.

When it comes to playoff hockey, I really don’t think we can depend on a lot of the softies in our line-up such as Stajan, Grabo, Mitchell, Stempy and yes, Kaberle. And you might throw Poni in there for his lack of drive.

I’m not convinced any of them are going to perform well in a tough, physical series or over a few series of that type.

For that reason, I think we need a lot of upgrades up front – if Schenn or Kaberle are part of the price so be it.

BB, build a playoff team – don’t make a series of quick fixes, so you can squeak in the first round and lose in 4 or 5 games like we always do.

He did, but on a pro-rated deal, and only for one year. He actually made more like 5 million. Lecavalier’s cap hit will still be 7.72 million when he is 39. But yea, you know what I mean. But imagine Schenn and Kadri as our prime prospects, Kaberle leading the defensive corps, and Kessel and our free agent signings (Marleau, Savard) leading the charge on the top line….Could be magical. Giving up 3 good players is worth it to acquire one who might be the face of the franchise…

  • Bob is your uncle

@Jordan: Off season, you we’re posting, “get Kessel”, “get Kessel” with many trade proposals involving Kaberle and/or White, and driving me nuts.( If I had your remote I would have thrown it at my monitor). I can’t think of any other Leafs I thought that highly of even with Kabs seeming decline and injury. I thought he could bounce back, partly because of the 31-39yr. old puck moving d-men thing you mentioned a while back, but also because almost all players have seasonal output differences over their career. So we both got what we wanted. At least so far. Kaberle might still be moved somehow if Burke sees a deal he really likes. I hope not. I like the way the team is coming together, and with someone who looks like a goalie, we seem to be competitive most nights. I like Kaberle over Campbell, not only because of the contract but Tomas’ best year was better than Campbell’s, was only one year earlier and there is only one year age difference. I looked for Kabs to bounce back. Campbell can pull you out of your seat with an end to end rush but how many goals does he really score. So how do you like our chances in Chicago and against Calgary. Hope we get 2 out of those possible 4pts. Do you think Toskala starts in Chicago on the front of another back to back, or do we get dueling Fins on Saturday. Which of those two games do you think the Leafs have the best chance of winning the match-up. Goal tending and a guy who can score on a regular basis. If we look like we have a chance to go 2 rounds in the playoffs maybe we hold on to the depth on defense for a while.

    1.) Toronto defeats Minnesota decisively
2.) Vesa Toskala starts in net against the Hawks
(Wilson won’t start him at the ACC until he gets his game back)
3.) Vesa chased from the net early in the 2nd period Friday night.
4.) The Leafs storm back from a 3-0 defecit with Gustavsson in net, only to lose in a SO.
5.) The Leafs defeat the Flames 3-2 on HNIC.

Not both, but I’m counting on one. There’s no excuse for Burke not to land one, if they become available. But still, both would be frakkin’ ridiculous:
    -
    Schenn – Savard – Kessel
    Marleau – Kadri – Stempniak
    Stalberg – Bozak – Hanson

Carolina has way better options than to trade for Toskala

    To Canucks:

Ray Whitney + 2nd round pick

    To Hurricanes:

    Cory Schneider

I think the leafs should see what they can get in return for pony and exelby around deadline time, i have a feeling the avs and blackhawks have interest in exelby at his price, and pony can certainly bring back a 2nd round pick for us at the deadline, cause lets face it, your never gonna win a cup with players like pony, theres no way the leafs can offer this guy what hes gonna want this summer, just not worth it.
