Burke Needs to Pull the Trigger

On the heels of a stunning victory over the Washington Capitals, in a shootout no less, Brian Burke shouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger on some roster moves.

While it was encouraging to see a collective effort from our boys in Blue and White at the Air Canada Center last night, Toronto Maple Leafs zealots have not forgotten the abysmal display of hockey that was presented to them during the first quarter of the season. As much as I’d like to believe defeating one of the Eastern Conference’s top teams will remedy the Leafs’ woes, it’s simply not the case.

As fans have witnessed since the post-lockout era, the Leafs’ squads have always succeeded, quite efficiently I might add,  at following up impressive outings with complete stinkers, halting any sort of momentum. And with the 2009/10 Leafs, that hasn’t appeared to change.

Or… could it?

While I’m not completely on board with The Toronto Star’s suggestion to call-up Christian Hanson, Viktor Stalberg, Jiri Tlusty, Tyler Bozak and Ryan Hamilton in replacement of Jason Blake, Luke Schenn, Lee Stempniak, Nikolai Kulemin and Rickard Wallin, I do think a couple of players from the Toronto Marlies should be given a shot.

Considering Bozak has underwhelmed in his tenure with Marlies thus far, I’d let him develop a little while longer.  Tlusty? Well, he’s struggled to translate his success from American Hockey League to the National Hockey League, but he’s only 21 years old, so he’s another player who can afford some more seasoning in the minors.

From my point of view,  it’s the duo of Hanson and Stalberg who should be given another shot with the Buds. Both have performed admirably with the Marlies and have smelled blood ever since the Leafs have stumbled–no, self-destructed– out of the gate. While Stalberg struggled to find the back of the net in his first eight games with Leafs, the intangibles he brought to ice–speed and a strong work ethic, specifically– were apparent for the team’s longterm vitality. And for a team that went 1-7 during his eight-game showing, criticism was practically non-existent for the Swede, who perhaps got a free-pass because of his rookie status.

The question is: Who do the Leafs remove from the lineup? Opinions vary, but I’d like to see Blake and Stempniak demoted. Removing marginal NHL players like Kulemin (whose hard work has been noticed lately, mind you) or Wallin won’t do anything. Burke has to send a message by re-structuring the Leafs’ top-six, and removing a former 40-goal scorer (how the hell did he ever score 40 goals, anyway?) and one of team’s primary scorers (as sad as that may be) should do the trick.

After all, this is not a country club, and now is not the time to let the team breathe a sigh of relief. The goal in the off-season was to make the playoffs, and the Leafs are currently a light-year away from achieving the arduous task.

If players are held accountable for their poor performances, the sense of entitlement will disperse for this club, and actual results won’t be such an asinine possibility from outside observers.

The timing couldn’t be more perfect. Follow a big win with a direct message to the players by benching two familiar faces in the dressing room. If that doesn’t light fire under their asses against the New York Islanders tomorrow night, then perhaps outside help should indeed be explored.

Burke, it’s time to take out the whip and lash this team to shape.

You stay classy, MLHS.

Grabovski actually passes the puck a lot more than people give him credit for.

I salivate at the thought of Stalberg lining up with Kessel. Put Stajan in between the two for one last kick at the can before a perminent placement on the third line. I’d also like to see Hanson up on Grabs’ line and sit Kulemin for that game. Demote Wallin to the A’.

Murray says Niedermayer will retire a Duck. It’s a tough situation, because no one would really want much of the team, except the parts you don’t want to move. Lupul makes a lot of money for his production (less than Blake, who makes 250K less). Boynton is moveable, but a dime a dozen – maybe a 3rd in return. Christensen is worthless unless he’s in a package, because everyone has players like him – borderline roster players. Marchant could get you a pick back probably. Artyukin might get you a pick back. Koivu and Selanne might net a nice return if dealt at the deadline. THat just leaves Giguere really. I wonder if Washington would take out a flyer on Giguere – a playoff goalie for a playoff team.

I think Pavelski has a higher ceiling than Grabovski. He’s also a North American kid with a fantastic work ethic. I dunno, I have NHL Center Ice, and I end up catching a lot of Sharks games. He is a fantastic player. Is there a better center we could potentially trade Kaberle for?

    @ Cameron

Its not that I think that Pavelski is a bad player. i probably haven’t seen as much of him as you, but I’ve got to see on the odd late game on Saturday and the playoffs. He is not a top centre on a top team. We’ve hopefully got Bozak, Grabo, Kadri, Mitchell next year. Kadri is maybe a 1B centre man next year (1A later on). Bozak and Grabo are both mid range 2nd liners and Mitchell a 3rd liner. I also don’t want to trade for a player with an expiring contract next year. Personally, I’d rather go after a 1st line or solid 2nd line power forward and give Grabo and Bozak a chance with Kessel.
    .
Kaberle, Stajan and a 3rd rounder for a 2nd line power forward, 1st rounder, midrange prospect
    .
    cheers,

That’s higher than should be. Kaberle alone should be enough to net a midrange prospect, a high first and a second line power forward. But add in Stajan and a third? Horrible,

Hmm Betts dislocated his shoulder again, and is out for a month. The Flyers are missing both of their bottom six centres.

Do they look at the farm for the stop gap, and risk losing more games and falling off the pace early in the year, or go out and make a trade to solidify their third and fourth line centre situation.

    Stajan a possibility?

well, he’s a RFA, and those kind of deals are largely dependent on the player in question (Pavelski) agreeing that he would be willing to sign a contract for such and such approximate dollars. Burke would get to talk to him first, presumably.

I just don’t think there’s a whole lot of powerforwards available right now. Examples of your trade:
    -
VAN: Bernier, Schroeder, 1st round pick
BOS: Wheeler, Hamill, 1st round pick
CAR: T.Ruutu, Bowman, 1st round pick
STL: Backes, Cole, 1st round pick
TBL: Malone, Lashoff, 1st round pick
    -
THere’s not a whole lot in terms of high profile powerforwards out there. Boston is the best option, with Wheeler possibly being priced out after a Savard extenstion, but I’m not certain I want Burke to deal with Boston again. THe advantage though, would be that Kaberle would almost certainly become available again in FA, because Boston is so pressed to the cap. It would be ideal to trade him somewhere where know it will be tough for the other team to fit him in long-term; where he becomes a win-now solution.

I agree with you actually. I was thinking about it afterwards :P
    .
    Lets change that too
    .
Kaberle Stajan for a solid 2nd line power forward, a first rounder, and top prospect.
    Then we bring up Bozak.

I like the St Louis option and Boston options. Boston won’t make the deal though as they have some cap issues. St Loius is in need of a Kabby type player and has some cap space.

I Just read your bottom piece Cameron and you make some very valid points, if we could get Boston to deal than you’re right. However, I think Boston is smarter than that.
