I’ll be posting at FAN590 and Prime Time Sports personality, Bob McCown’s site Fadoo.ca moving forward in addition to MLHS.
My first post consisted of more point system analysis, looking at how post-expansion increases in tied games precipitated the implementation of overtime in the early 1980′s. It needed tweaking once again and then once again in the late 1990′s, and then fully eliminated with the final implementation of the shootout.
McCown, now blogging on the Hockey News, is a proponent of eliminating shootouts.
This is always a hot topic, and I’ve covered point systems here, and here.
Some quick info:
From expansion in 1967-68 to 1982-83 teams played 60 minutes. Tied games during that span increased from 76 games (17.12%) to 165 at its peak in 1980-81.
Combatting the rise, the NHL introduced overtime in 1983-84, motivating teams to go for the win.
The introduction of overtime decreased the amount of ties to a low of 79 in 1985-86, with 21 NHL teams, dipping to the lowest post-expansion percentage of 9.4%.
The NHL would implement three measures to reduce, then eliminate tied games, with the resultant birth of the loser point.
Overtime in 1983-84
Changes to the point system giving teams a guaranteed point if tied at the end of regulation, and introduction of four-on-four overtime
Implementation of shootouts post lockout.
Expansion in the 1990′s (excluding lockout shortened 1994-95) further increased actual amount of tied games, but remained consistent percentage-wise.
The amount of games entering overtime – banking the guaranteed point – skyrocketed.
In 1983-84, 16.67% of games were tied after 60 minutes and went into overtime. By 1991-92, the percentage had climbed to almost 20, and blowing up to over 26% in 1992-93, only to creep further towards 30% of games by 1998.

i was looking at the points just now Leafs are 12 points out of 3rd in the east, 12 points!!
Has anyone anywhere on earth ever looked at 12 points with 59 games to go unreachable?
I am NOT a crackpot who thinks the Leafs are going to finish 3rd but this season is far from over when you see 12pts away from 3rd!!!!

Brother, Bear, Generally out of place for a city with no wildlife.
You will be missed, not by me, but you will be missed!!
.
Nowwww lets bring on Stevey The Suit!!!!!!
or Litigation Larry
perhaps Andrew the Accountant
a little Chuck the CEO
or perhaps my favourite Evelyn the executive assistant!!
All make more sense for Toronto
ohhhh wait one more GPS Paul and his Taxi of no Directional sense.
November 27th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
@ Eddy:
I agree… I was also looking at the standings and noticed that… Ottawa is in 3rd and we are 12 points back. We are playing decent now, we just need to string together a couple solid months.
Also… Litigation Larry has a nice ring hahaha
November 27th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
@ 2 minutes for changing their name every week
i know eh, i mean is it crazy to think come late January we are battling in the 6-10th spot? IMO it is not, obviously the road ahead looks much better in the midst of the current stretch but as long as we can limit our loosing skids to one or two games at a time and string together a solid few point nights in a row we will start to move up those standings quickly.
Thats one nice thing about the new scheduling, we will be playing alot of games versus teams above us, we HAVE to win those games.

Just out of curiosity…. cleaning out my closet today and came upon one of my Toronto Maple Leaf collectibles. It’s a hockey stick (like a gift shop one but life size) signed by the entire 1988-1989 Toronto Maple Leafs. Not their greatest years by any means, BUT it does have Wendel Clark, Borje Salming, John Fergunson, and lots more I cannot make out.
Any idea what this would be worth?
November 27th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
@M9
that all dpeends on the condition of the stick. Im no appraiser but with items like that its usually a buyers driven market, if your lucky enough to get two people who are absolutely in love with the 88-89 team who knows what they’ll pay for it.
Me personally id hang that bad boy somewhere show it off, dont know why it was in the closet in the first place.
November 27th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Funny post ED but in saying “Generally out of place for a city with no wildlife”, you kinda forgot the doe the cops tasered the other day downtown (and she wasn’t even from Poland!).
November 27th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
@EF
Thanks for the input. I agree on the “buyers market’ mentality. I wonder what offers it would fetch on craiglist on a ‘make an offer’ deal. And I’m purely just curious at this point as it is a nice piece to keep and display… on the other hand I rarely ever look @ it because I’m a renter right now with no place to display it, lol.
November 27th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Litigation Larry sux.
I like Loserville Larry better. He could wear a wife beater under his counterfeit Leaf Jersey and a pair of track pants. After every loss fans would get to line up for an opportunity to kick him in the nuts.
November 27th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
@Blue
hahah i saw that, what a shame that a Canadian city has no idea what to do with a Deer. Im suprised they didnt shut down the TTC.
@M9
Yeah i would saty away from e-bay unless you do that minimum bid thing, Craigs list would be a cool idea cause you can get an idea dont have to sell exactly. What would be a price you were looking for? Cause come to think of it this site might be your best option. Wouldnt that be cool if this site added a Trade memorabelia option???
November 27th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
@EF
Now your thinking… Even just a place to post TML memorabelia!!! And I have no price in mind but I’m going to try to craigslist idea.
November 27th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
Let me know when its up, me and the old man collect that sort of stuff.
November 27th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
@ M9
Try Kijiji as well. I’ve sold old tools and equipment from my business and Kijiji was the best for responses.

“what a shame that a Canadian city has no idea what to do with a Deer. I’m surprised they didn’t shut down the TTC.”

Apparently the reason they tasered her is, that they caught her on camera galloping down the 407, and was in arrears on the bill they sent her the previous day.
November 27th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
LOL, That’s funny Blue Max, nice one.

ummm Tiger may have been hammered
He hit a fire hydrant and a tree backing out his driveway at 2:25 am and was rushed to hospital in serious condition?
sayy whattt?

November 27th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Where does it say he “may have been hammered”??
TMZ:
Police say alcohol was not a factor.
November 27th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
@Komi
No sorry that was my personal opinion that he was drunk, i mean look at it. Its 2:25 am and on his own block, leaving his driveway, he managed to hit a firehydrant and run his car into his neighbours tree? That would have to be a pretty bad driving morning.
November 27th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
Also did you just credit TMZ as a credited news source? hahaha im just playing its obviously more credible than me it was just the first time ive seen TMZ on here made me chuckle.
November 27th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
LOL Hey TMZ broke the Michael Jackson news before any else LOL
Something must be up cause your right all those signs and he crashed hmmm makes me think his wifey was a bit bizzzzayy!
November 27th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
I hate TMZ…. absolutely hate it. My buddy watches it all the time, I still can’t figure out why. It’s not like these people are hockey players! Why should we care about them? lol
November 27th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
@Komi!!!
hahahah wouldnt that be hilarious!!!! Like the curb episode, it would be so funny if he was being accused of drinking and everyone was after his head and his only way to clear his name was to confess the truth.

@Edvard: How you doin. Yes, I’ve been looking at that 3 spot as a small possibility for a while. After tonight, we play BOS, BUF and NYI in 8 of the 14 games before Christmas. Taking a large majority of those points would be big. Boston could be affected by injuries. Buffalo is starting to slip. Maybe they haven’t solved their problems. I think we can beat the Islanders. Just about every goalie we face has ‘all star #’s', so we have to continue to outwork the opposition with a team game. After a win against Buffalo Monday, we need to go into Montreal on Tuesday, and take another, both in regulation. If we get 1 point in Columbus it’s a bonus and we have to stay out of the penalty box. Too much talent. After Boston, we play Atlanta at home. Tough call. Hopefully we get a point. After we play the Islanders at home, and the Bruins on the road, we’re home to Washington. I’m not counting on any points from that one. Ottawa comes in Dec 14 and we have to beat them. Phoenix comes in, ?????. Then we play Buffalo, Boston, Buffalo and the Islanders again before beating Montreal on Dec 26 at home. So it looks like those three teams are a big key to our season. There, that was easy. And so comforting too.
November 27th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
@Bob
i am well thank-you, i wish the quote function was working id re-post that bitch every 30 minutes. We are coming up on a very crucial stretch in our schedule, if we do really well like you said over these next few games we can almost eliminate our treacherous start. We all knew we werent gonna run away with this battle but we all wanted to be a part of it, i think now we are going to at least join the battle and well seee how we do.
I have so much optimism going forward, we cant control what they do, its like an airplane sometimes its scary as shit and you have no idea whats going on but at some point you gotta look out that window and say “its out my hands, gotta leave this one too the people whose job it is. Lets enjoy this flight”.
Our start of the season was arguably harder than others, teams will enter slumps. I cant really recall looking at the standings on TSN last year and NOT seeign a team that had a Lost 5 next to there name.
November 27th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Alcohol was not a factor does not mean drugs weren’t! No big loss either way.
I’d absolutely hate to see a poor/middle class family man hurt, but I couldn’t care if the rich shit all die at once. They have enjoyed their meaningless lives so far anyway.
November 27th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
Eat that CNN TMZ has a pic of the missing fire hydrant LMAO

November 27th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
If we don’t make up ground in the next 15 games and by this I mean something like a (8-4-3) record, we are simply done, no excuses. After christmas there is a clear angle of the playoff team’s and the bottom teams. We need to get our selves in the 7th to 12th seed somehow. If we are 15-20 points out of a playoff spot at christmas it is virtually impossible to get back in the top 8, and our season is a wash.

Blue are you in Ontario?

@ 2 mins
TMZ and Entertainment Tonight are banned in my home. No way in hell are my kids going to be exposed to all the bullshit they cover. It really makes me wonder about the IQ’s of most North Americans and why people care so much about what the stars are doing.
I have 5 kids with my 6th on the way to feed and a trip to the grocery store is painful enough without having the stupid bitch ahead of me at the checkout wasting my time while she gawks at the tabloids. Seriously it makes me feel nauseous.
Who the fuck cares? I guess most do!
November 27th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
I for one hate the point system in any format, get rid of it and get rid of the shootout. Keep the overtime though.
I’d like to see the teams ranked by wins. If the game ends in a tie after overtime then each team would be credited with a tie but it would have no point value attached to it, if a team has the same number of wins in the standings as another team, then the one with the most ties (least losses) takes precedent in the standings.
This system would be similar in effect as the three-point system, but would ensure that teams are playing for the win for the full 60 minutes plus OT. Look at the standings in any year and you would seethis system would have very little impact in the rankings but it,s effect on the style of game on the ice would be significant. No more hanging on for a tie. No more playing it safe for the last 10 minutes of regulation to secure the single point.
Most importantly it corrects the injustice of a team not making the playoffs because a team with less wins had more points simply by not losing as many in regulation.
2008–09 NHL season : no effect on who qualified
2007–08 NHL season : Carolina won 43 games, Boston won 41. Boston qualifies, Carolina is eliminated. Is that fair?
2006–07 NHL season : Montreal wins 42, NYI win 40. NYI qualify, Montreal misses.
2005–06 NHL season : no effect on who qualified
Points systems promote defensive style hockey, if you have to win your going to take more chances, you won’t sit on a tie. A wins based system will promote a better game on the ice and reward teams for actually winning.

Gents im leaving work, i think tonight ill take a night to watch the game privatly and log in with the boys on here.
It always nic ebeing reminded what exact play Stajan “sucked dick” on, or how pathetic Blake is, youd think some of the people on here when they are having sexy time with different girls they give up half way through cause shes not living up to their expectations in the first 3 minutes!! (hahaha i used three minutes because i was reffering to other people on this site, not my coitus stamina, when if compared to a 3 minute half is nowhere near approaching that duration haha :) )
Enjoy the day Lads!!

Well…obviously! Though I thought it has more to do with common sense, than Hitler, being on the far right of all things. Try being anything else when you hear the gangsters responsible for starting a shootout that killed an innocent girl on Boxing day a few years ago go free just recently.
Anyway, this a place for all Leafs, and not politics. I apologize if I got out of line.
