But but but !!
There is no way on God’s Green Earth that Gustavsson gets blamed for that OT goal. Komisarek is standing directly in front him. A goalie that good (NHL level) would be all over that shot if he sees it. His quote after the game was “I will need to get better at seeing around players to find the puck” (not verbatim). He was completely screened. The d-men in Toronto need to realize its not Toskala they are playing in front of any longer and need to let the Monster see the puck and make the saves. He has quietly accumulated a .905 save % let him do his job.
What you say may have merit, but if Toskala were in goal last night I think there would be a lot of people saying the 1st & 3rd goal were weak. To me giving up 2 goals over 60 minutes was a good night over all, but I think both goalies should be looked at under the same magnifying glass on a per game manner. I hope this concern of mine turns out to be unwarranted, but I think Gustavsson has looked weak or shakey on wrap around plays lately. Hopefully that changes.
@ daniel marois:
Stajan, Poni(if isnt re-signed), stemp and Mayers will all try to be traded regardless if we are still in the run. Burke said a bunch of time that he wants to win now, but still keep the long term goal intact. That to me means just what I said. I will be awfully pissed if he doesnt

Exactly! Gustavsson has looked great so far this year, but has been shakey on alot of goals. You ccant blame him for the OT goal, but sure would have been nice to see that save eh? Halak made them all night long, so it COULD have been done. Just saying

Reading that Burke will be making offers to the UFA’s in January scares the living shit out of me. There is no reason to even make the offer. Sign the 3 RFA’s and that’s it. He will get jack shit for any of the UFA’s. Players on losing teams have no value and this team has been losing for a while. IMO start making anyt kind of deal possible the second the clock strikes midnight tonight.
I hate Ron Burgundy Wilson as much as anyone here, and we can make a collage of stupid moves he makes in the run of a game. To name a few:
-Wallin on the ice with other scoring wingers
-Primeau out in OT/scoring oppor.
-Stempniak and Stajan on the #1 PP
-never puts Grabovski with Kessel to EVEN try it
-Man love for John Mitchell
-Plays Wallin in the last few mins when we need a goal
-Plays Toskala and still expects him to win
-Puts Wallin in the starting lineup
Those are just some of his stupid moves. But Im sure theres more!
But we need to stop this “get rid of Wilson” crap. If we brought in a new coach, you really think thats gonna make THIS team THAT much better? Is he gonna show Stempniak how to hit the net? Show Kessel how not not be a pussy and play physical? Make Wallin score? NO NO NO NO NO. A NEW COACH WONT. We need to keep this cancer until we KNOW we are a capable team, then bring someone else in. You really wanna infect a new coach before he has a shot. Toskalitus? Wallinsyfilis? Stajantitus? All these are very serious infections that a new coach would get right now, and be booed out of town. So lets just wait for now, and let Ron Burgundy go down with the ship he started to sink himself!
@ Jordan: Yes, it would have been nice to see that saved, but I didn’t have any strong feeling that the Leafs were going to win the game after they went down 2-0. Sure I was hoping. While looking at some of the comments on the game thread last night, I noticed you mention that the game wasn’t over yet.(After the first period, I think) One of the few hopeful or heartful comments I saw. So I’m was watching the game and Whitey’s name came to me as one of those guys I occasionally get a feeling about. Then he scores the first goal. I could see the Leafs tying it up, but I just never got a good feeling that the game was theirs. Tonight will be a little easier on followers of the Leafs, as we have no expectations.
I dunno, I like Grabo. You have to remember he is getting the most attention at center because hes really our best center. We need to fill our top 6 out more then it is now, and hope gustavsson can be a great #1. Im praying for Marleau, because if that happened I would lose my mind! We would be ALOT more compeditive and better ooverall with him and our young guys getting older
Marleau-Kadri-Kessel
Hagman-Grabo-Stalberg
Kulemin-Bozak-Hanson
orr-Mitchell-rosehill
Komi-Kaberle
Beauch-White
Schenn-Gunnersson
Frogren
Gustavsson
Mcdonald
NOW, I know its not gonna happen, and Im just blowing steam here….but it is possible you have to admit….nothing on my list is out of the question. So THERE IS HOPE PEOPLE!

I agree with most of it, but I don’t mind Wallin given a chance with some scoring wingers. I mean, he’s playing pretty bad now but he was a stud in Sweden. People loved him there, and he lead the offensive charge for Farjestad. Not to mention he was captain too. Perhaps he just needs to get adjusted to the North American game, his skills can’t just vanish?
Dec 27 @ Pitt………………..haha
Dec 30 @ Edmonton…………….win
Jan 2 @ Calgary………………win
Jan 5 H Florida………………win
Jan 6 @ Philly……………….win
Jan 8 @ Buffalo………………???
Jan 9 H Pitt…………………maybe by then we’ve traded for Ovechkin
I thought the Leafs played a very solid three periods last night with the exception of those two goals – the second being a mini-breakaway – and you know – during a game – whenever a breakaway occurs, who’s fault is it? The defense or forwards – yes, it’s the goalie’s job to stop it but (90%?) of those breakaway attempts occur in goals.
The players who I feel are a part of the Leafs future are:
Mikhail Grabovski
Niklas Hagman
Phil Kessel
Nikolai Kulemin
Viktor Stalberg
Carl Gunnarsson
Ian White
Jonas Gustavsson
Traded or released:
Jason Blake
Thomas Kaberle (big if)
Mike Van Rynn (probably released)
Jeff Finger
Garnett Exelby
Carlton Orr
Vesa Toskala
Lee Stepniak
On the bubble
Luke Schenn (if Burke gets a WOW offer only)
Francois Beauchemin (this is only the first season for him)
Mike Komisarek ((this is only the first season for him)
Secondly, when Burke lands a player don’t expect it to be a BIG NAME player. Too often, the likes of the media specially Howard Berger, buy into big name hockey players and there are a LOT of dark horses out there waiting to play for the Leafs.
My playoff predictions are still very … maybe. Last year, I flat out didn’t expect to make it because the expectations were there – we were not good enough. This year, Burke raised the bar and we were expected to compete for a playoff spot and I’m disappointed as a fan. I expected more.
That said, with the exception of two goals last night, we played solid. That means there were FEWER turnovers. Since Dec 19th we have lost by one or two goals.
The problem is not just our defense. If we don’t get the offense going, we put pressure on our defense. We need to up the scoring and finish it off. We can’t just depend on winning one goal games or winning in overtime. (1-9)
I think the focus here for Burke is power forwards – not defense.
@ dawriter67:
Perfect assessment. Love it. I liked their play somewhat last night too because if we would have scored in OT it would have been “great win by the Leafs”. These ones are hard to take but every team has to lose sometimes, lets be happy with the point. One thing I dont agree on is Schenn being avalible. I would send him down but NEVER trade him. He was 5th overall for a reason and is gonna be a stud someday, we jst gotta stop expecting him to be the next Jesus
With Matt Stajan and Lee Stempniak logging the second and third most minutes for forwards on your team you are not winning much. Why Wilson believes any different is beyond me. Change that stat and things may look better. A bad PK and PP can be easily addressed if you leave these 2 on the bench.
Ron Wilson should be fired!!!!
Ya hes had the team playing good and all this mumbojumbo….but for fucksakes people, 1st shift of 4 on 4 he sends out stempniak and primeau and then we just sit back on our heals. I was at the game and ive never been so mad in my life. Schenn had his worst game as a leaf to date, we can almost pin the loss on him alone but the last goal was all wilson’s fault.
Beaucheman is a frog, he should be playing for montreal, he has no heart had he feeds that bad energy to other players. I am done for now go fuck yourselves montreal.
i totally agree but i just heard(on leafs lunch i think it was) burke sticking up for ron again saying he hates how everyone is always pointing fingers at the coaches and that the players are the only ones being held responsible. what a fucking joke. ron wilson should go back to the states

Bad PK, not so good PP, no defensive structure in your own zone, inability to score timely goals, line-up malfunctions, starting Vesa at any time, not even considering a Grabo/Kessel combo for any length of time, Blake in the top 6….I could go on and on and on. Yet BB still defends RW!!! It’s bullshit and a lot of what BB does hurts this team at least in the forseeable future. No picks, tight against the cap, losing team, no structure on the ice due to a coach unwilling to swallow his pride. A LOT of this teams play has to do with how BB and RW manipulate this line-up, and beats this so called system he has to a bloody pulp with NO RESULTS WHATSOEVER! RW has to bend, we don’t have the talent for what he is trying to incorporate systems wise. They are not the talented Sharks. I was against this Kessel(no physicality, no toughness, perimeter player) deal off the hop and nothing tells me any different as of today. When BB took over I was dreaming of the Broadstreet Bullies type team. Tough, big and skilled. Fact is, if BB was gonna prematurely ejaculate he should have done better either later in the year or on draft day. He overpaid for a piece of the puzzle he OBVIOUSLY doesn’t need RIGHT NOW. We’re a bottom 5 team with or without Kessel. What this team needed and still needs is LOTS of high picks(won’t happen now), solid build on the bottom six, but we will never see that cause BB just HAD to make an unnecessary move like that one. Totally pre-mature. Now we must build through trade(who we got…Kabs and Schenn…2 fuckin players that will get us anything of value, both of which may be Leafs for life…ug). To who-ever said another coach couldn’t make this team better–I would have to disagree. Guys like Lemaire or Ruff HAVE a system that wins games. Both Minny and Buff had weak teams at one time or another and looked better. Fuck, even Nolan woke up the Islanders. It’s almost as if BB and RW have FORGOTTEN that they TRADED THOSE PICKS AWAY.
For the sake of conversation I would like to share my opinion on your post, as everybody is entitled. I don’t see Schenn on the bubble, honestly. He is what 19?? Scott Steven, his future mould, hopefully, took until the age of 25 or older, when he left St. Louis and got the big contract in New Jersey to realize, his game is to be kept simple, and his intensity is the key to winning games because he is a leader on the ice. That’s what Schenn is. Trust me you don’t want Schenn in a few years on the other side of the ice against the Leafs, eyeing Kessel in the open ice. This year is a right off, it should have been a tank year, they were supposed to play their young players, and unload their vets. Every successful team has done this, Philly, Pitts, Chicago…. They unload their vets and acquire potential, YES, they acquire unproven players and mould them to exemplify what they want the team to be built for. Colton Orr is a must keep, unless if Devane comes into his own. Primeau should be resigned and kept as the third or 4th line center, or a player of his mould like Malholtra, these are players that are called plumbers, not Stempinak or Kulimen (love him though).
- I don’t see Poni, or Hagman or Grabovski in our future. Poni has been on this team for too long, and has probably been use to this losing characteristic. I personally don’t like him. He is a floater and super streaky. I find him soft as hell for a big man. Hagman on the other hand, I love his play and skill and is the ONLY TOP 6 FORWARD WE HAVE WITH HEART. Prove me wrong. But they should be building the team. I can see them receiving a high 1st rounder (since this a weak year) and prospect, or even better a couple of prospects, hopefully from thes last few years since they were deep draft years. Now Grabovski, he should be traded, next year they have to play Bozak, find his worth, and the way Kadri played in the exhibition games and of late in the OHL and now with the WJHC. He deserves a shot, by the way Toews and Duchene seem to be fine without that vet experience in front of them, plus the coaches have confidence in them to do their own thing. Grabovski can acquire an interesting player in return. He is in my opinion what I described Poni. How do you see these guys playing in the playoffs if they can’t hold it together in the regular season? The intensity in the playoffs as everybody knows is multiplied by a hundred times more.
- Patrick Marleau will not come to Torornto, he has been use to the West Coast, probably his wife too, and if he has kids them too. He wouldn’t move away to far from that area code. The most north he will go is Vancouver. It will be another Pronger situation, I can see it. If he doesn’t sign with Sharks, the Ducks and LA who have a well built team, and are a piece or 2 away from being contenders would be a better fit for him.
- Who wants to come to Leafs and this shitty situation??? In the summer its rebuild time, then sign vets so its playoff time. Now they can’t even compete with team who struggle more than them. They MUST trade everybody over 25 and start fresh like they should of a few years ago. They are just prolonging the process, and making it more difficult on themselves. I do wish Ron Wilson would be fired or let go too, I find an available John Stevens a better coach then him and more pleasant to listen too. RANTS like these are useless other than stress relievers; MLSE would never come on these websites and even care about what their fans think.
-Enjoy the holidays everybody, you and your families have a lovely and joyous New Years.
I’m just of the opinion that BB has fucked this team over right now. We can’t build through the draft, and to add anything to the top 6 and especially the top 3 his only choices are expensive UFA signings or sacrificing the good young depth at D to make it happen since our UFA mediocre forwards aren’t getting us much in return. Then he’s got to replenish/rebuild that depth on D through… HMMM…sacrificing talent up front, UFA signings or waiting until we get a descent draft pick(2012 maybe). Vicious circle. A lot of what he is doing makes no sense to me.
@Pazuzu
Dude, just step back. We were all stupid for expecting a good team this year.
Think about when Kadri and Schenn are a bit more developed and we have a solid core along with Kessel. Gustavsson looks like a true young number 1, so were not fucked just yet. Let’s say Paradis is a good powerforward and we have:
Kadri
Kessel
Paradis
Schenn
White
Gunnersson
All young guys to bulid with

Good observations – flat out – Poni must go – he is a floater. Last year, I was in Phoenix to watch the Leafs play in Glendale and I had a good long look at Antropov – he’s a horrible skater and when Burke moved him, I was glad.
This year should have been a no brainer yet the lure of 8th place has both Burke and Wilson with their heads up their ass’. Long term Leafs should have been dealt and their spots handed to the college group. Why sign them at 23 if you don’t plan on playing them? It wasn’t like drafting an 18 year old. Burke is fucked if he thinks he will get anything for any of them.

Hal Gill- 2nd+5th (Hal Gill is well….Hal Gill. Thats it lol)
Moore-2nd (Stajan is out playing him this year)
Antropov-2nd (same production as Poni)
Looking at that you have to think we will end up with a pair of 2nd rounders. We got Ryan and Blacker last year so this year I would be happy with that
I know I’ll get blasted for this one, but if BB could sign both Poni and Stajan for around 5 million total, I’d be all for it. The reason being, I think they along with Kulemin would make a solid 3rd line with some scoring touch. If BB could somehow build a 1st line without Kessel, preferably have Kessel stirring the drink on the 2nd line, we would be in business.

Not a bad thought, but I would rather see a 2nd round pick IMO
@ canucksnaphook:
Damn right we are
@ LeafsRyan.:
Ekman-Larson(D) was Phoenix’s pick, Dallas got Glennie(RW). Also if I were them I trade Morrow before Neal, that kid is a bloody monster and Morrow is beginning to age plus with their depth at left wing and in a semi rebuilding mode why trade young stars (Benn, Ericsson, Neal) and keep aging vets…especially ones with value like Morrow? Kaberle + Stajan for Ivan Vishnevskiy + Brunnstrom + 1st 2010 + 2nd 2010
We get 2 very good prospects and 2 picks – they get a top flight ofensive dman (Outside of Robidas none of their dmen can do anything offensively) and a center that could easily replace Modano on the third line since they have so many top-6 forwards to make a top-9 and let Modano be a 4th line vet presence.
wow I feel like an idiot I swear Dallas got him for some reason but now rembering back I do remember them picking up Glennie.

December 27th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
With Matt Stajan and Lee Stempniak logging the second and third most minutes for forwards on your team you are not winning much. Why Wilson believes any different is beyond me. Change that stat and things may look better. A bad PK and PP can be easily addressed if you leave these 2 on the bench.

Kadri
Kessel
Paradis
Schenn
White
Gunnersson
All young guys to bulid with
December 27th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

I think I would be putting Stalberg, Bozak, Hanson and even J.Mitchell ahead of Paradis

Looking at that you have to think we will end up with a pair of 2nd rounders. We got Ryan and Blacker last year so this year I would be happy with that

We going to host this evenings game with our unbiased insight and brilliant commentary?
December 27th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
I know I’ll get blasted for this one, but if BB could sign both Poni and Stajan for around 5 million total, I’d be all for it. The reason being, I think they along with Kulemin would make a solid 3rd line with some scoring touch. If BB could somehow build a 1st line without Kessel, preferably have Kessel stirring the drink on the 2nd line, we would be in business.
