Gustavsson Selected To Swedish Olympic Team

Per Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star:

Jonas Gustavsson’s roller coaster ride through the very early part of his NHL career hit another high Sunday when he was named a backup goalie for Sweden’s entry into the Vancouver Olympics.

Said Gustavsson, upon learning of his selection:

“It’s an honour, it will be my first time at an Olympics … the Olympics are one of the greatest things you can be in.”

Congratulations to the Monster on this great achievement, as he joins a team that many predict will be a lock to reach the final stages of the tournament.  Sweden versus Canada in the Final could be a definite possibility — imagine that!

Congratulations to him. It’s definatly going to be a great moment of his young career. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him play and win a couple of games playing over there with Lundqvist, who held most of the records that Gustavsson broke this past year.

    Again, great for him!

    @ Nights:
I don’t know if he will get a chance to play much, as he will be the backup to one of the best in the world. But the experience will definitely serve him well, and his selection is reflective of how highly respected he is within Swedish hockey circles.

I think this is a very good thing for both Gustavsson and the Leafs. Since Jonas missed training camp and has had trouble with consistent action due to injuries, this will give him a change and the opportunity to come back after the Olympics with a renewed spirit. When the Leafs play those final games of the season after the Olympics they should have a Gustavsson who has not been overworked. He may put together a good run.
Here are a few observations on the team:
Thumbs Up: for Jason Blake who has clearly raised his game of late and has even shown some leadership out there. He is making a good habit of scoring big goals.
Thumbs Up: to Nic Kulemin for his tremendous third line type play…goals will start going in for him very soon…predicting he scores 5-6 goals in next ten games.
Thumbs Down: to Rickard Wallin for his weak play. Enuf already!! We cannot afford to have a passenger on this ship. Hanson would be a nice replacement!
Thumbs Down: to Toskala who continues to give up goals late in close games on rare chances given up by the team. See goal by Ruff in Pittsburgh as the latest example.
Thumbs Up: that Gunnarson is back soon.
Thumbs Down: that Mitchell is back soon. Send him to Marlies.
Thumbs Up: to Stalberg being near ready to come back in soon.
Thumbs Up: to Mikhail Grabovski’s tremendous play in his own end. Would love to see him get some PK time along side Kulemim.

Don’t get me wrong I love the Monster and I think he is going to be a great goalie in the future, but I don’t think he would do very well in the Olympics right now. He is still raw and if he had to face one of the top teams he wouldn’t stand a chance. He gets out of position a lot and gives up big rebounds which would spell disaster against the top players in the world.

Really surprised this doesn’t have more comments…and almost half of them are not even about the Monster…

Congrats to Jonas on getting the roster spot, hopefully he can stay healthy long enough to realize that spot.
