GFWE Game #12 Predictions and Other Bits

The Leafs face up against their old bench boss Pat Quinn tonight hoping to get back on a winning streak of some sort.  The big lineup change seems to be a demotion for Grabovski to the fourth line.  Rickard Wallin benefits from Mikhail’s demotion with a undeserved look on the second line.

In other news, Team Canada has been selected for the upcoming Olympics.  Omissions include Mike Green, Jay Bouwmeester and Dion Phaneuf on defense.  Up front, the absence of Vincent Lecavalier is not as surprising as that of his teammate Martin St. Louis.  Faithful Canadian “heart and soul” types Shane Doan and Ryan Smyth were also left off in favour of players such as Patrice Bergeron.

Tomas Kaberle, Niklas Hagman, Jonas Gustavsson, and Mikhail Grabovski are the current Leafs on their countries’ Olympic rosters.  Phil Kessel and Mike Komisarek will likely boost the total to 6 with expected inclusions on the American squad.

Be sure to include your predictions for tonight’s game against the Oilers.  With this contest winding down every game is important!

Diggler, the coach isn’t working with the team that Burke intends for him to work with. The only guys that will for sure be here 2-3 years from now, when we are hopefully competing, are Kulemin, Schenn, Kessel, Orr, Komisarek and Gustavsson. Kadri will be there too, so that’s really only 6 roster spots that Burke has filled so far. He has 14 spots left to fill (possibly less if guys like Stalberg, Bozak, Hanson, Beauchemin, White and Gunnarsson end up being around for the long haul). But he for sure has to swap out about 10 guys with new and better guys, so there’s no point rushing the coaching decision.

If Burke gives Wilson a solid team to work with, one he thinks can make the playoffs and compete past the first round, and Wilson is still sucking it up, then, and only then, will he get rid of Wilson. I am all for a complete overhaul though. Trade Kaberle, Grabovski, Hagman, Ponikarovsky, Stajan, and Stempniak. Let Wallin, Mayers, Exelby, and Toskala walk (or package them in other deals for slightly better returns). Suffer with Finger and Blake on the roster for 1 more year and then trade or demote them.

Trade Ideas (and again, I only advocate trades if we get back into a hot-streak):

    To LAK: Hagman
    To TOR: Teubert

    To STL: Kaberle, Grabovski
To TOR: Berglund, Rundblad, 1st in 2010 (or 2nd, whatever)*

    To CHI: Stajan, Frogren
To TOR: Sopel, 1st in 2010

I feel this one needs explanation. In my opinion, Stajan is worth a mid 2nd round pick, and probably a late round pick throw in (ie. 2nd and a 5th in the following year). Chicago could use depth at center for their cup run. So they get Stajan, but then we also do them a very amicable favor and take the shit-side of a Frogren/Sopel swap. As a result, they upgrade the 2nd+5th, to just a 1st.

    To NJD: Lee Stempniak
    To TOR: 2nd in 2010

    To NSH: Ponikarovsky, Mikus
To TOR: Blum (they can throw in a salary dump if they want -ie. Jones)

Then, on closer to July 1st, after the playoffs:

    To SJS: White, Mitchell
    To TOR: Pavelski

    Next year’s roster:

    Kulemin / Pavelski / Kessel
    Stalberg / Berglund / (UFA)
    Blake (A) / Bozak / Hanson
    (UFA ) / Primeau / C. Orr

    Komisarek / (UFA)
    Beauchemin / Teubert
    Gunnarsson / L.Schenn

    (Finger, Sopel)

    Gustavsson / (UFA)

That leaves us a little over 12 million to spend on free agents, and actually more like 15 million because of the bonus cushion (Bozak and Schenn won’t come anywhere near their bonuses, which ends up reducing the cap by about 4.5 million by the end of the season). Gonchar is rumored to not be getting a resign in Pittsburgh, and if Kubina becomes available again, he might be a nice piece to pickup to lure Kaberle back after a season without him. If all else fails, we could turn the offensive reigns on the back-end over to someone like Zidlicky, or lower tier UFA’s.

Even if we can’t find a star defender to replace the loss of Kaberle and White, we’d have Blum, Blacker, Teubert, and Rundblad in the system.
