    @ Julie Sucks:

Cammalleri didn’t want to come here because Burke was maxing out his offer at 5 million. He wanted Cammalleri to take a hometown discount of 4.5 million. Gainey stepped in and overpaid. Can’t remember which happened first, but one of them was a reaction to the other when we stepped in and signed Komisarek.

    @ Atomic Wedgie:

Grabovski and Stempniak have value, come on. It’s the same old argument as it is with Stajan, but on better teams, these guys are key contributors who can step in and play for you for a couple years while your younger players develop. Being insulated by a true top line, and an actual leadership core does wonders – just ask anyone who plays in New Jersey.

You don’t think Nashville would like another playmaking center? You don’t think a post-Kovalchuk Atlanta could use Grabovski? You don’t think Anaheim could use another center past this season (next year, their next best center to Getzlaf is either Nokelainen or Marchant – both of whom are 4th liners)? Like I said, package this guy with Kaberle, and we should be able to get a very good forward back.

I can’t really argue Mayers and Exelby, though Chipchura did return a 4th rounder, so stranger things have happened. Mayers would be welcomed to a team like Columbus, or even LA, where his grit and age would be appreciated. In Toronto, we just see a lack of skill when we look at Mayers, but in other cities, they don’t need more skill necessarily. Chicago has expressed interest in Exelby in the past 6 months – does a few months on the worst team in the league really destroy your career? Probably not. I’m of the opinion these guys can net us SOMETHING (even a 7th rounder).

Stempniak on the other hand, has carved himself out a new role, and could definitely surprize with his return at the deadline. He has been one of the most effective forwards for the team all season, but over the last month and a half, has really become gritty. He can be counted on to be a checker on any team in the league, and can also provide 40+ points, and plays both special teams moderately well. To a team like New Jersey, Stempniak (especially considering he’ll be a cheap resign) would be far more beneficial than a late 2nd round pick.

Like I said, put out the word Burke – “What will you give me for”:

1.) Kaberle + Grabovski (looking for a proven top 3/6 forward)

2.) White + Hagman (looking for a proven top 3/6 forward)

    3.) Stajan + Exelby (looking for a 2nd +)

    4.) Stempniak + Frogren (looking for a 2nd/3rd +)

    5.) Ponikarovsky (looking fo ra 2nd +)

My guess is we get a couple favorable calls on every one of those packages.

    @ kb:

Checked the stats as you said, and, shockingly, I was right. Prior to the trade deadline last year, Kubina racked up 12 Goals and 24 Assists for 36 of his 40 points. In the last 18 games of the season, he managed just 4 points. Contrary to popular belief, Kubina is actually worse when the pressure is off….

Well, Grabovski’s been pretty solid on the injury front, and his current injury didn’t come as a result of a hit, so I doubt that’s even an issue. As I said in another post above, there are teams that could use Grabovski, and have wingers to pair him with that would make him even more effective. If Grabovski becomes a 60 point player (and I think he will, 49 in his first season, and 25 points this season even though everyone else is uselss). You would think there isn’t much time for Grabo to collect more points this year, but looking back at the stats from last year, it is curious to note that he only had about 5 goals and 12 assists at this time last year. My guess is he has a strong finish to the season after returning just in time for the Olympics.

Glad you didn’t argue about Stempniak. I really think he’s turning inot a premiere checking forward, and one of the few guys I would resign. I’d resign Stajan and Poni too if they didn’t want raises.

I don’t mind the Beauchemin and Komisarek signings, I just would have preferred that he only signed one. Like I said, that 4.5 million would have been better served dumping Mayers in the minors and signing Cammalleri for 6 million.

    Beauchemin + Cammalleri >>> Beauchemin + Komisarek + Mayers

Regardless, we need at least one more quality forward who can take some of the heat off of Kessel, and preferably too. I think Burke will be able to land a free agent forward in 2011, because I have a hunch that he’ll win the bidding for Semin and put him on a line with Kadri and Kulemin – bang, 2nd line done. Now turn Kaberle, White, Hagman, and Grabo into 2 top 3 forwards, and look in free agency for mobile D to complement our “pylons”

    @ Cameron:
Thats absolutely right, Kubina is built for the playoffs thats the reason he got the money he did. He was the best defender on the Lightnings cup winning team and without him they would not have gotten far. Is he slowing down? Yes. Does he still rack up around 30-40 points? Yes. Does he play good positionally? Yes. Is he physical? To a degree. Is he worth 5mil? This is the essential question, his cup ring, good point turnout and above average defending would lead me to say 4.5mil.

    @Cameron

The issue with that line of reaasoning is that Cammalleri signed with Montreal prior to Komisarek and Beauchemin signing with the Leafs, plus BB did have an offer in on Cammalleri. So BB’s signing of Komisarek and Beauchemin had no effect on a possible Cammalleri signing, as he was gone already. Was there ever any indication that Cammalleri even wanted to come to TO? If so, I don’t recall reading anything about that.

It’s all well and good to say the Leafs should have signed Cammalleri instead of one of those 2 guys, but if he didn’t want to sign with us when the offer was there – it’s a moot point to say we should have signed him.

And re: Kubina – my main point was that he still had that NTC clause that he was unwilling to waive, so he had to be moved for any return last summer during his limited trade window. If we were a cup contender and he was the final piece you might take a chance and hang onto him, but being a bottom 8 team – you have to move him for assets, period. If he starts the year here, the $5 million of cap space is tied up on someone who can’t be traded and is going to walk at seasons end (because he doesn’t fit BB plans, and he is too old to keep as we move forward). For a team that is re-tooling, does that sound like a smart move?

    @ kb:

Yes, there was a great deal of speculation about Cammalleri. The papers in Calgary were constantly reporting that Cammalleri was going to take a hometown discount to play in Toronto. The rumor was that Burke was offering him 4.5 million for 6 years, and would go as high as 5. Like I said, Gainey came in and snatched him away from Burke with a much higher offer, and Burke retaliated by signing Komisarek (who had been offered 5 years, 20 million by Gainey). I couldn’t remember who struck the first blow, but thanks for reminding me. Either way, there was definitely some Habs/Leafs gamesmanship at play on July 1.

And there was an interview with him on CBC about a month ago where he talked about his interest in playing in Toronto. Basically this exact thing came up, and Cammalleri ended up changing the subject before admitting that he signed with the Habs for money, by saying that he loves Toronto, but he lives there all summer, and didn’t want to live there during the season as well….

    …rrrright.
