The Maple Leafs make a rare visit to Nashville tonight to face the Predators. The consistently inconsistent Leafs will look to bounce back from Friday’s 6-1 drubbing from the Capitals.

Just a quick preview for tonight’s game:

  • Jonas Gustavsson will start tonight for the Maple Leafs. He’s 0-3-0 with a 4.36 GAA and and an .852 SV% in his last 3 starts. Gustavsson needs to pick up his play quickly as his future remains uncertain.
  • Pekka Rinne goes for the Predators. Rinne shut out the Leafs in the only meeting last season.
  • The Maple Leafs have lost 7 of their last 9, getting outscored 31-17 in the process. Also, the Leafs have been outscored 8-2 in the first period in their last 6 games.
  • The Leafs have lost 5 straight road games and have a 54.3 penalty-kill percentage in their last 10 road games.
  • The Predators are returning home after a 3-game sweep of Western Canada. The Preds also expect Jason Arnott (upper body) back in their lineup after missing 4 games.

Other injury notes:

  • Wayne Primeau (knee) could be back Tuesday against the Thrashers, or Thursday against the Lightning.
  • Mike Komisarek (shoulder) is expected to return either Thursday in Tampa or Saturday against the Panthers.

    @camarorob
    Ya, I remember the Doug Favell days, Brian Glennie’s fro, Ballard..*shivers*…this team is very bad…worst Leaf team I can remember. Remember the Courtrnall/Kordic trade? I actually liked that one. We had 2 40 goal scorers and needed more toughness at the time, IMHO. Russ was fast but really didn’t score a whole lot in Toronto.

    @Canadian Kid
    We shouldn’t have to pull off a coup, we should of kept the picks and rolled with the rookies.

    @LeafsRyan
    Agree 100%. BB = WTF is he doing!?!

    All I really wanted and hoped through last summer and this exhibition season was a #1 goaltender. That’s all. I’m so dissapointed we signed all these guys, lost the picks and are hard against the cap. A #1 goalie…that’s all I wanted before this season…UHG. Now all I can do is daydream about how mangement can fix this mess while instead I should be counting the days to the draft. Frustrating? Oh yes, very, very frustrating.

    I really cannot fault Gus for those three goals except for the 2nd one (I think) it went off a stick then off a defenders stick and into the net – in that goal – Gus was out of position and to the right of the crease. He might have been able to deflect that one away had he been in position.

    His puck control is improving – he’s moving rebounds to the corners when needed, etc. He’s learning and I think his learning progress is going well. I would sign him to a contract for three years 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 in the third year. I think it’s only fair.

    Stajan’s goal of the night was nice but I still want him and his poof budy Poni gone. They spent the rest of the night floating and not creating any opportunities. The only line combo I have confidence is in the Kessel, Bozak and Kulemin line. The rest can go shit themselves.

    Be patient with Burke – remember we don’t want any quick short cuts or solutions ‘just to make’ the playoffs.

    And if – shocker – Kovalchuk – is available – and wants to come to Toronto – I would put an offer sheet to Kovalchuk – why on earth would I pay you 10 to 12 million a year? Basically, you will have no quality wing man to play with if we dump most of our cap space on you – so you take a six million 5 year deal with an NTC for the first three and an NTC conditional for the last two years – if you don’t like it, go fuck yourself (slams down phone)

    I absolutely do not believe in paying an idiot 12 mill a year for a quality center man. What if he gets injured?

    Anyways, no I don’t think Kovalchuk will come to Toronto.

    What would’ve been so wrong with keeping the same roster as 2008-2009 season,no Komi, no Beauchy, no Kessel, no Orr the only additions being the college kids who could actually compete for a roster spot, W.Primeau, XLB, Gus to battle Vesa for backup(Gus wins Vesa in minors), and a #1 goalie? That’s exactly what I thought would happen. Boy was I wrong.

    I wonder why Ron Wilson never gave Grabovski a chance with Kessel. He tried Stajan and Mitchell with him for extended periods of time but neglected to try Grabovski. I think Grabovski would have been perfect with Kessel because he likes to carry the puck through the neutral zone which means Kessel wouldn’t have to.

    Sharks just beat the living hell out of the Flames. The scary thing is that Heatley, Thornton, and Marleau only had 4 points combined. Talk about secondary scoring…

    Matt Duchene is quietly leading rookie scoring. This was predicted by a lot of people but for some reason I didn’t see it happening. He’s not getting near as much exposer as some of the other rookies.

    @ The Captain:

    That’s a good question. I’m not sure but here’s my guess. RW’s thinking may’ve been that Grabo and Kessel are too similar as players and he wanted someone who plays a different style with PK. That said, it would’ve been nice for RW to try Grabo with PK because of the fact you mentioned that Grabo would be another option as a puck-carrying forward

    I hope Burke looks at phoenix when he goes to make some deadline deals… It’s probably his best chance of getting a 1st rounder. Phoenix has 2 first round picks thanks to the Calgary Jokinen deal. The way Calgary has been playing as of late that could even be a low pick. They also have a garage full of young talented players and prospects. They need playoff revenue. Plus the NHL gave them money to make signings to improve sales.

    I was just on their boards and the fans seem to have an intrest in Hagman. If we were to trade Hagman I think this would be the team we would get a 1st out of. He would automatically become the leading goal scorer on the team.

    @ Andrew R
    .
    For someone who constantly compares players to other players around the league to try and justify his own argument, for example, Kulemin vs. Datsyuk, how can you say Antropov is on par or even better than Kessel? What did Antropov do when he was 21? He never broke the 20 goals in a season until he was 28, has never had a 60 point season and has had two major knee reconstructions over his career.
    .
    As far as your “offers more than Kessel” comment, the same can be said for Kessel, how does Antropov’s skating compare to Kessel’s, his shot, his age? Each player has qualities the other doesn’t have, but considering Kessel’s age, I would say advantage Kessel.
    .
    The one thing you are right about is the return Burke can expect for Hagman, if he trades him at all.
