Kovalchuk to Leafs – A Clarification

I would first like state that I am addressing this rumor because it is, in fact, circulating around the league that Toronto is interested in the Atlanta Thrashers’ sniper Ilya Kovalchuk. Yes, this rumor did come to light due to an Eklund blog, but no, it is not fake. In fact, every team in the league would love to get their hands on Kovalchuk. So there you have it, the rumor is true, but it was an easy one to pinpoint by Eklund because every single team in the league understands that Kovalchuk is available, and every single team in the league would love to have him on their powerplay. It’s as simple as that. Now to the non-obvious part.

As much as Brian Burke would love to add Kovalchuk to the Leafs roster, the asking price would have basically been what Kessel was acquired for. Now that the Leafs do not have those picks, Atlanta would surely demand Kessel and maybe even Kadri in a deal to acquire the Russian phenom.

But that isn’t the goal.

Atlanta wants him signed up immediately long-term. If a deal cannot be reached, due to Kovalchuk having little to no interest in remaining a Thrasher for years to come, Atlanta would be forced to deal him off as a rental. Unfortunately for Kovalchuk, that’s not what he wants either. He feels he can bring the Thrashers to the playoffs this season and is fond of his teammates, but not fond of the city.

That’s where the whole “Kovalchuk to Toronto” factors in, when really it could factor into any large market city. Kovalchuk wants the money and the show. He is the face of the Thrashers franchise, but there’s not too many fans in Atlanta pouring in to witness his talent. Kovalchuk wants stardom and knows he can achieve it in a high hockey market city like Toronto, or even any of the New York based teams, and even Los Angeles where he would be treated like a rock star. Anze Kopitar already knows what the rock star treatment can be like.

Toronto does not have (and simply cannot provide) the package Atlanta would demand for Kovalchuk as a rental. It’s likely any team he is traded to is the team he will sign with, so the Thrashers will demand top dollar for him. Knowing how much better of a player he is in comparison to Marion Hossa, you could imagine just how much of a return Ilya would collect for Atlanta. It’s a package not worth shedding from the Leafs organization.

Many would suggest trading Kessel for a proven elite goal scorer like Kovalchuk is a no brainer, but Brian Burke is far more intelligent than to give up the farm for one player (despite the obvious one-sided deal it took to land Kessel in the first place). That is why free agency day will be exciting for Leaf fans.

Should Kovalchuk be dealt to a team he has no interest in signing with, or even remain a Thrasher to attempt the playoff push, free agency day would see the Leafs at nearly 75% the obvious choice for his placement for years to come. With certain contracts expiring and a willingness to shake up the core of the franchise, making room for Ilya would be simple, and Eklund is right, the endorsements he would receive in Toronto are immensely beneficial when attracting stars to the market.

But unless he finds his way to free agency, the Leafs would be taking a step back in offering up the likes of Kessel, Kadri, even Bozak, D’Amigo, Blacker, Stalberg and other potential high profile prospects within the organization. Brian Burke came to the team seeking out a way to build their farm, and this trade would erase all that he has done.

The only side note to consider on the Leafs behalf is knowing that Burke could have just offered the Bruins a 1st, 2nd and 3rd in a tendered offer sheet for Kessel. Instead, he threw out the 3rd and attached a second first in the deal because he wanted to get the deal done sooner and also knew the Bruins would have matched the offer. Should Burke feel Kovalchuk is his next big blockbuster acquisition and wants him sooner than free agency day, the offerings of a ridiculous package could very well be on the horizon.

It’s all a matter of the true “direction” and “plan” of the organization, though many would argue that throwing away two firsts, a second and all their high profile prospects is a little less than a plan and a little more than insanity.

It should also be noted that there are rumblings that Burke is interested in landing Colby Armstrong sometime this season as well (who is slated to become a free agent this summer). Burke tried hard to land Armstrong in a deal last season when the Leafs dealt Kubina to Atlanta, but after each team pulled away more pieces of the deal to what it became, Armstrong too fell off that list.

I’m almost 40 and can’t say I’ve ever seen a team so devoid of character. I still think this has a lot more to do with RW’s despondent attitude toward his players. How many times have you heard that asshole refer to his team as not talented enough. How does he think that’s going to make the players react? What a complete douche bag. Being forthright and honest is one thing, being a fucking asshole however is another.

    Completely agree…RW=Lord douche bag.
Personally, I like Nolan and think Toronto is a place the guy could actually stick. No way he’s a BB killer, and it seems every team Nolan takes over does well and the players really like him and play hard for him. Just my opinion and not a very popular one I would guess.
I think RW is in the same place Murray was in St.Louis. Nobody really knows where they stand and don’t “get” him.

Good question. Maybe, he seems to be a players coach, but there are obviously some problems with Teddy that I don’t think are known to most of us, otherwise, he would be in the league, again, now.

I really don’t know if the problem is totally RW, or whether it has something to do with the assistants as well. Acton, well, he has been there seems like forever, and what has he been part of besides generally losing?

How is Gilmore doing in the OHL, any chance he is ready soon? I can’t seem him being a coach of any other team than the Leafs.

I mean, bottom line is that’s what I’m so sick about with this team. I’d rather take a chance on a top 1-5 draft pick,(let’s say hall for example) develope that player, roll with rookies, probably get another top 5 pick, and if Hall doesn’t pan out in year 3 ya probably get another top pick, so on and eventually you build a winner. Like growing a garden er something. Get a seed, plant it, nurture it and it grows. Ya don’t buy a bunch of mature tomatoes, bury them in the dirt and pick them the next day.

In time, when there are players of somewhat equal talent, then yes, we can. Bozak has potential, but is still a rookie, despite his age. It is very obvious that other teams are simply double teaming him every time he touches the puck, and it looks like in response to that, he has been trying to get the puck to other players, and has had some success the last few games.

Look, the trade is over, so we can whine, bitch and moan about it all we want, but ignoring the facts will not change the facts. Personally, I think Kessel is worth at least our first round pick this year and the second round pick we gave up. That basically leaves the first round next year, but let’s be honest, by the time that pick would be able to produce, Kessel will be closer to 30 than 20. I also think that Bozak, Stalberg, Gunnerson, Gustavson, Hanson are reasonable replacements for the first rounder next year. If, and it may be a big if, we improve and finish in the top 20 next year, would you not think that any of the Frat line, or Gustavson, would be a reasonable pick at that position in the draft? If so, then we will already have all those players actively contributing to the team, or moved as assets for better players, instead of waiting until 2013 or later to even BE on the team. Long way of saying that I really don’t mind the trade, and even if I did not like it, what the hell is the point of bitching about it, it is done. Get over it. Hell, I got over Sittler, MacDonald, Gilmore, Wendel, Borje and yes, even Frank Mahovolich being traded (Frank was my favorite Leaf when I was a kid), so we can get over this. All I want now is for the kids to get experience this year, instead of waiting till next year to get experience.

It seems as if no one will step up and be willing to represent as team leader on this hockey club. I really think this has a lot more to do with the coaching situation as opposed to all the “players fault”. I generally am in favor of most of BB’s moves. I think our problem lies with this asshole coach. RW is a brilliant coach with this massive ego and attitude problem. I thought it seemed more apparent when he was fired from San Jose and was immediately on the defensive and in full crisis mode. The Leafs need a coach that actually inspires them to play harder. I understand that their making millions and are supposed to be immune to all this shit, but it simply isn’t true.

Perhaps this is all part of a “smoke and mirrors” act which is designed to purge the team of just about whatever player they can, maybe RW is being told to be an asshole? That would at least make more sense to me than his current method of coaching does.

    @ Killerrocks:
    Great friggin post, mate.

Next year was really going to be the year that will be the first BB team to date anyhow. I never felt good about this season based on the general sentiment surrounding the pending UFA’s. It’s like they have been referred to as some kind of meat hanging from the butchers window waiting to be purchased since opening day. They had to know most of them were never going to be considered for next years team and duly traded or not tendered offers.

    I would like to see

    Kulemin-Kadri-Kessel

    Stalberg-Bozak-Hanson

    Blake-Stajan-Stempniak

    Rosehill-Primeau-Orr

    Kabi-Schenn

    Beauch-White

    Gunner-Komi

    And,
Pray to god someone want’s Grabovski….

    @ honesthockey:

I can’t believe you are really blaming Stajan for that too-many-men penalty. Oh, wait a minute, yes I can, since I’ve seen your posts and have noticed you have a near blind hatred for him as a hockey player and find ANY little thing you can to bash him! Yes, yes, I know: 5+ years the guy’s been here and no playoffs with him here since his rookie year. Yeah, ok, I get that. You want him out of here, fine! To blame him for that OT penalty, however, is unbelievably ridiculous! That so-called penalty shouldn’t have been called at all!! The guy was pretty much completely off the ice by the time Primeau came on and touched the puck. What a BS call!!! Simply put, the refs fucked that one up bad!

And by the way, honesthockey, if you need to bash Stajan for ANYTHING in that game, why not bash him for that own goal he almost had when we had the extra man just before the PP, if it’ll help support your agenda and make you feel better about yourself! It would also be good if you would actually bash OTHER Leafs as well as you know who when they make mistakes. Maybe you’ll have a few less people getting on your back and it may also seriously increase your respect and credibility if you’d do that!

    @ KGL24:
As you can tell I am really bothered by ‘everyone’ on my back.

Any other player would be diving over the boards to get off the ice in that situation. You see it all the time. It’s called hustle something that Stajan knows nothing about. And then he comes out with this in the Sun:

“It was a tough break and a tough way to lose,” said Stajan, who had given the Leafs a 2-1 lead. “They changed lines at the same time, so if we had too many men, they had too many. But we can’t take penalties when we haven’t been able to kill them all year. We have to do a better job keeping our composure.

Your team had the puck you moron. Get off the friggin ice.

Yeah, I just watched the replay, and Stajan was still opening the door with both his skates on the ice when Primeau touched the puck. Just a stupid penalty.

Would you rather have Jason Blake ($4.0 million) and Jeff Finger ($3.5 million) or Marian Gaborik ($7.5 million)?

Would you rather have Vesa Toskala ($4.0 million) and Lee Stempniak ($2.5 million) or Michael Cammalleri ($6.0 million)?

    @HH, danvertising

Stajan had 2 major brain cramps – much like Poni. I can handle a player being beat because he is less talented (but is trying), however I cannot handle anyone who knows better (and can play better), but f—s up because they know the blame will be directed elsewhere because they are the “hometown hero”, and then proceeds to shirk any responsibility at all for the loss in the post game interview. So many people on this site continually give him a free pass because “He’s a hometown boy – we can’t call him out because we need homeboys on the team”. Pure BS – he is coddled and soothed, and rarely held accountable – so we have to endlessly put up with his brain-dead play game after game.

If he could cut out the obvious laziness in his game, and actually play with a burr in his saddle (ie – play to win!), he’d could probably write his own ticket in this town….
