Odds & Ends: Poni, Stajan, Stemps, Kulemin

- The Toronto Sun has an interesting article up, talking about the future of several Maple Leaf players leading up to this year’s trade deadline. During an informal survey of hockey executives and general managers attending the CHL Top Prospects game, the consensus was that aside from Tomas Kaberle, Ponikarovsky would be the player who would garner the greatest return. It was speculated that he would perhaps net a late 2nd round pick, being comparable to but not as refined as Nik Antropov (who yielded the Rangers’ 50th overall selection last year).

- The article follows up by noting that players such as Stajan and Stempniak might get “a sniff”, but not to expect a significant return. However, it appears Burke has not been particularly aggressive in dangling any of his players at the present time.

- In another note, according to the Russian website infox.ru via the Toronto Sun, it appears as if winger Nikolai Kulemin will be named to the Russian Olympic roster for the Vancouver games. It’s nice to see that Kulemin’s solid all-around play this season is getting him some recognition from those outside the organization.

    @ Schenn:
Barker as he isn’t even in their top 4, he plays with Sopel on the 3rd pairing. I would say he is better than Hjarlmersson, Barker and Sopel…especially these two who are pretty bad.

However, if I had it my way the Leafs defense would look like this:
    Kaberle – Schenn
    Beauchemin – Stralman
    Gunnarsson – White

I really don’t think Chicago would trade Barker straight up for White.

    @ Schenn:
Read the Chicago blogger dudes stuff and watch their games, he is Marc-Andre Bergeron lite. PP specialist that is a liability on 5vs5.

I agree with Kaz, although I’d say Beauchemin is already in form. If Komisarek comes back and plays like he can and Schenn continues to develop, I don’t even think White would crack the Leafs Top 4!!

    @ canucksnaphook:

There is no way I’d take Stralman over White or Gunnarsson, however I felt Stralman would be better off with Beauchemin than Gunnarsson!

    @ Schenn:
I would. We GAVE stralman away for free and remember the formula:
(an ex leaf player) + (playinging with another team)x (we gave up on him) = He is Jesus Christ!
Stralman is the best in the world!

White is by far the most versatile and reliable defensemen on the Leafs roster right now. Sure you can count on Kaberle for more points, and more “thread-the-needle” type passes. Sure you can count on Komisarek and Schenn for a couple more big hits per game. All you can really count on Beauchemin for is a solid back-check when he gets caught in the play, and then a series of poor decisions. You know what you’re getting with White all the time, and Gunnarsson looks to be in that mould as well.

I can’t think of many (if any) teams that White isn’t a top 4 on. If anything, his stats as a member of the Leafs are a testament to his ability to overcome a bad situation. He’s statistically better than every Flames defensemen. On the Hawks, only Keith and Campbell have more points than him, and his plus minus is pretty steady with everyone too. Barker is brutal compared to White. Detroit is obviously solid back there, but I agree with whoever said that Rafalski has really fallen off – WHite might usurp Rafalski’s role if he were in Detroit. White is just all around solid, and if Wilson said this, it is because he and Burke are trying to posture White into signing a longer deal for less than he is worth…

Yea, all Beauchemin does is give the Leafs 25+ minutes of solid hockey a night!

I can’t wait until puck drop for a change of topic. I’m so tired of this BS talk about Tlusty & Stralman. They’re gone, get over it.
And now White’s under the microscope, jeez. I’ve never met a more stubborn bunch (although I enjoy most of your company on the site).

I don’t think anybody here is putting down White at all. I believe we all think he is a great defenseman, we’re just guaging where he’d fit in on other NHL teams!

I agree on the need for a topic change, bring on the Gameday thread!

Couldn’t be a better time to trade White although most GM’s woulodn’t over-rate him as much as this board. Here’s another player given opportunities that he wouldn’t get else where. Since Whites inclusion the Leafs have finished 18th, 19th, 24th, 27th and this year could be 30. I can’t wait to hear how it’s not his fault. He plays the second most minutes on this team. He plays a big role in why they are where they are.

And I like White because of his hustle. But it sure doesn’t win you hockey games.

The PP looks so fucked! One guy down low and 4 guys way on the outside. What the hell is going on here? Any village idiot can see how ineffective this is.

    30 teams in the NHL x top 4 defensemen = 120 defensemen!

I would say White is definitely a “Top 4-D!”
