The Maple Leafs have traded G Vesa Toskala and F Jason Blake to the Ducks for G Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

There is no first-round pick coming to Toronto, as rumoured.

Giguere has another year left with a $6M cap hit.

Toskala is an unrestricted free agent. Blake has another 2 years at $4m per.

Burke: “We’re not done.” I’d hope so, considering there are no forwards left. Exciting!

I can’t help but wonder who the hell is going to score goals for us now? We have moved all of our top forwards today, and, didn’t get any scoring back. Now, that being said, I love the thought of Phaneuf Kaberle on the point on the PP, it will be awesome. But, who will be our forwards now???

4 forwards out. Points-wise, Stajan will be the toughest to replace … Hagman and Blake haven’t exactly been lighting up the lamp of late.

Mayers will be easy to replace – regular shift for Rosehill will do it.

Mitchell probably goes back to the 2nd line for now to replace Stajan, until Grabovski is back.

Stalberg, Hanson will likely replace Blake and Hagman.

Our forwards will now be the young guys, just like I, at least, had hoped. Almost everyone on this blog wanted Stajan, Blake, Mayers, and Toskala gone. That is the good news. Not sure if we will live to regret losing Whitey in the long term, and Hagman in the short term, but it appears at least that the rebuild is fully underway. Only ones left that were part of the old guard are basically Kabs and Poni.

Like our defense. Komi, Beach, Kabs, Schenn, Gunner as top five is not bad, with Schenn and Gunner only going to get better. I am curious to Burkes comments though, about not being done. Do we move any of the newly acquired players? Also looking on a Calgary blog, and they think the Flames will flip Hags and somebody else to Carolina for Whitney. What a day!

    Seriously?

  13. 13
    MapleHeart Says:

I see that we only have 5 forwards left with real NHL experience now. Poni, Stempniak, Grabovski,Kessel, and, Kulemin. I am happy that we aquired the players we did today, and, we finally got rid of Blake’s stupid contract, but…my concern is…who will be our forwards????

  14. 14
    Jonez Says:

    Wilson’s comments are contradictory:

    1) He says he hasn’t been fair to Wallin with ice time, yet he says that nobody deserves ice time, that they have to earn it. Conflict of interest.

    2) He says Mitchell can now play without looking over his shoulder. Well… wasn’t that the whole point during the off season? Keep looking over your shoulder because someone else wants your job? Wasn’t that supposed to breed a hard working, competitive nature?

This guy says something different every time he opens his mouth.

    PLUS added Phaneuf, and Aulie.

    As of right now …

    Kulemin – Bozak – Kessel
    Poni – Mitchell – Stempniak
    ??? – Wallin – Sjostrom
    Orr – Primeau – Rosehill

Stalberg or Hanson will fill the remaining spot.

yeah I did, makes our top SIX look even better. Just too excited that things are actually changing, I guess! So with that as our top six, and only Komi being injured, where do Finger and Exelby go? (I know, I know, the natural answer is who cares, but…..) To the Marlies thus freeing up a bunch more cap space? I mean really, once Komi is back, possibly as early as this week, what happens with these two? So does this start to solidify Burkes plans to start in the net with JSG and Monster, move out to defense with that top six, then the forwards? Seems to me that this just sped up his blueprint a bit. What say you all?

The upside of all these moves is we did not trade any picks. The major downside is we did not get any picks back, but we did get a couple of good prospects out of Calgary, so maybe that offsets getting any picks.

For what it is worth, HB is saying that Burke is looking at taking on Cap space from the Rangers, Flyers or Kings for picks/prospects, sending players down to free up cap space (Finger/Exelby?) and Poni to Pittsburgh to play with Malkin. That should generate something rather tangible, I would think.

Well, as many have said, this year is a write off anyway, so with these moves, Burke has solidified the goaltending and defence, probably for a long time, especially if Gusto pans out like we think he will. While the forwards need some work no doubt, take that list and add a couple of good FA, like Kovy for instance, and then what do you have? Also, remember next year Kadri is around, plus a bunch of others, so while this year is and will continue to be a write off, with the next moves Burke makes, I think our forward issue will be taken care of. And Burke says he is not done yet……….

Maybe not, just wondering about the HB comment about him going to Pittsburgh. If so, would it be for picks, prospects, or roster player? I tend to agree that we might need all the offensive help we can get at this point, but again, given that this season is a write off, do we really care?

Just one more thought. Sjostrom was a first round pick, I believe, and Dion is if not elite, then a top level player. Do either of these on their own, or together, offset the second first round pick for Kessel? If you look at it, we get Kessel, Phaneuf, Sjostrom plus the frat pack, and gave up two firsts and a second, none of which would have any impact for at least two years, probably. I don’t think the ones we gave up would have fit into that category.

I think Phaneuf is similar to, but a caliber or two above Beauchemin until the playoffs. I know it has been a trying season for poor Beauchemin but this guy has that extra gear in big games that Canadian players are famous for. I don’t think he’s going anywhere. If Kovy is only a rental player, assuming he moves, I think this actually HELPS us in an effort to sign him in the off season. Young team, good goaltending and defence, good kids, big stage, etc. Depends on what happens with him at or before deadline. Unless Burke got some of these players to trade for Kovy now? Just occured to me, maybe Dion and ?? to Atlanta for Kovy, then sign an extension? Nah, probably not. But we do have better assets now than we did 24 hours ago.

I agree, but BB said he won’t sign him and that is it. We all know he’s a man of his word, even though nobody really asked about his word in this instance. I hate when he shoots his mouth off like than because though things might change and Kovy might be willing to sign a favourable deal with a big market team like the Leafs, Burke has already commited away from him.
