Post-Game Thoughts: Truculence Personified

Not one player on the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ 2009-10 squad has had their name chanted in the Air Canada Center. It took Dion Phaneuf all of 6 minutes and 51 seconds.

When Travis Zajac had his face plastered into the boards, I just knew we had found our very own Chuck Norris. Then, Phaneuf dropped the gloves with Colin White and my man-crush officially began.

Okay, maybe I’m getting a little too excited. But when’s the last time Leafs fans have had reason to get excited about a potential future Norris trophy winner? I, for one, think we’re entitled to some Kool-Aid drinking tonight.

But let’s get post-game thoughts brewing here, folks:

- Dion Phaneuf. That is all.

- Okay, seriously… He set the tone early with a couple of big hits and it seemed to instill some energy into the lineup—something that’s been lacking the last few seasons. He was aggressive on the puck carrier and limited their time and space in the Leafs’ end. He also loaded some shotgun blasts from the point and has added a new dimension to the Leafs’ powerplay. He registered 4 shots, 6 hits, a +1 rating and logged 23:47 TOI. I’d rate his first outing in a Leafs uniform a solid A.

- Nikolai Kulemin continues to impress. While he hasn’t translated his offensive numbers from the KHL, he’s been a defensive presence for the Buds and has managed to show flashes of his offensive potential. Tonight he buried an opportune rebound from Yann Danis to score his 11th of the season. At 23 years old, Kulemin is displaying the type of hockey that will land him a job on the 3rd line for the foreseeable future. He can chip in goals when called upon and kill penalties effectively. If the Leafs can retain him for a reasonable price, what more can you ask from a player of his ilk?

- On the same note, you gotta like the defensive awareness of the Kulemin- Rickard Wallin- Sjostrom line. Yeah, that’s right, Wallin actually had a solid game and was noticeable on the ice. He was aggressive on the forecheck and his quick thinking resulted in some odd-man rushes for the Leafs. Not bad, for once.

- Anyone else think it might be worth re-signing Stempniak? He has a strong work ethic and he’s a solid two-way presence. He can chip-in anywhere from 40-50 points a season and log some PK time. Could serve a crucial role on the third-line moving forward. Thoughts?

- Jean-Sebastien Giguere was solid between the pipes tonight. His big frame covers a lot of net and it compensates for his average lateral movement. He wasn’t tested too much but he made the routine saves and, if you were to ask ex-Leaf Vesa Toskala, that’s not always a simple task. He’s composed in the crease and I don’t recall a moment where he didn’t have control of the puck. Oh yeah, did I mention he got a shutout his first game? Truculence.

- Alexei Ponikarovsky seemed to establish chemistry with new linemates, Phil Kessel and Tyler Bozak. The trio produced the second goal, off the stick of Kessel, using their speed and ability to connect tape-to-tape passes. Ponikarovsky drove to the net on a few occasions and with Kessel patroling for loose pucks, it could serve as a good combo moving forward. And Bozak seems to be progressing as well. He’s a little tentative under pressure and can lose the puck, but his slick hands and vision allow him to create plays. It’s still too early to determine, but he’s making strides towards gaining consideration as the team’s number-two center next season.

- Christian Hanson had a decent game centering Stempniak and Mitchell. He did not contribute much in terms of offensive chances but he made smart decisions in his own end and he didn’t try to be flashy with the puck. He also saved a goal in the dying minutes of the second period with some quick thinking, too. Needs more time to adjust to the rigors of the NHL game but he still has the tools to become a quality third-line player.

- Gotta wonder if the inclusion of Phaneuf to the top PP unit will mean more goals from Beachemin. The Leafs now have two big slapshots in their arsenal and two defensemen—Tomas Kaberle and Carl Gunnarson– to feed them the puck on the back-end. This trade could have more positives then we originally thought.

- Sjostrom has done in one night what Jamal Mayers had failed to do during his entire stay. Okay, maybe that’s not fair and it’s only one game, but Sjostrom provided solid penalty-killing and made some timely shot blocks. He won’t turn the entire PK around, but it’s refreshing to see a player fill his role as a defensive specialist—even if it is one game. He logged the most minutes, along with Wallin, on the PK with 2:17 TOI, and he registered 2 shots to go along with his assist and +1 rating. Not too shabby.

I can literally write a book here of my thoughts on the game, but let’s hear what Leafs Nation has to say before this post becomes a little too long-winded.

You stay classy, MLHS.

One thing me and my friend were joking about was that Giguere was PALMING the puck. Like, instead of catching it, he just kind of like…the best way we described it was “facing pushing” the puck. We were dying every time it happened. Fuck, what am amazing game. I feel so high right now, like a 6 year old boy again. This smile isn’t coming off my face for weeks.

    Three things:

    1. As someone already said….it now feels like we have a solid young core of players to build around. Kessel, Schenn, Phaneuf, Bozak, Kadri, Kulemin. If Kadri develops into a top-3 guy, look out.

    2. JS gave no rebounds whatsoever tonight. Hope that continues.

    3. There isn’t one player we lost that can’t EASILY be replaced via free agency this summer. Okay, maybe White, but we got a HUGE upgrade on D by getting Phaneuf AND Aulie. Damn Burke, how did you do it? Okay, so Hagman was a pretty good player for his salary, but he can be replaced easily.

One more thing. Imagine in two years if Phaneuf is in the all-star game, Aulie is a SOLID 4 – 6 DMan for us, and the Flames are wondering where the fuck are their players from the deal! Ha. Dare to dream.

Giguere looked huge in net. He’s a huge guy.

Let’s wait till they play Ottawa before we start making too many claims. But I will be watching Saturday night.
AT least they didn’t look dead on the ice tonight. And I loved not seeing Stajan fall down or Blake skate really fast up the boards going nowhere.

It seems the new acquisitions have opened up the ice.

Now trade Poni, and find a way to ditch Finger, get a 1st rounder and a good forward prospect for Kaberle, and all my prayers have been answered. That would give us LOTS to look forward to.

Keep Kaberle, Burke should sit Kaberle in a poorly lit, sketchy room with a pipe dripping and talk him into taking a 3 year contract at 4 mil a season hometown discount contract and not let him leave until he signs it. It’s Burke, he can do whatever he wants, and then trade Komisarek to some team for a very gritty second line winger.

    I can dream, right?

Very impressed by Kulemin again tonight. Thought Phaneuf was a pimp, and Sjostrom made a very positive impression – if he keeps that stuff up, no doubt he’s a useful player. Giguere was steady.

As long as the PP sets up with Kessel on the opposite side of the ice from Phaneuf, the D having to focus on trying to shut down Dion’s shooting lane is going to mean more open ice and more options for Kessel. Should help him be more productive on the PP.

Only one game, and there are many more struggles to come for this team, but finally there’s hope in the building.

Wow where were the odd-man rushes, the running around in our own end the turnovers (although friggin stempy did it a couple times). Where was the 60-80 second defensive zone pressure that leads to eith a goal against or a penalty (also known as a free goal). Awesome game all around.

Anybody else think that sjostrom looks and skates like kulemin? You can barely tell them apart.

And Wallin finally played decent as well 8-3 in faceoff circle.

This trade looks even better now. (Even though it was one game) WE have ALL the potential in the deal. None of the players we gave up are going to blossom any more than they have they all are working at their potential. All 4 of our players werent playing to potential….yet.

Couldn’t have asked for a better game. All 3 aquisitions looked good to great. Dion set the tone early, and ignited this team to a whole new level of confidence which was only helped with how steady and calm Giguere was all night.

It’s actually exciting to watch games again.

I liked Bozaks game tonight. Made a few nice plays with the puck, but most of all he was STRONG on the puck, even throwing a few hits. Anyone else notice this???

I was just going to ask the same thing! I remember seeing him crush someone along the boards.
Wow, that game was actually fun to watch, unlike the rest of this season. They could’ve lost and I’d still be almost as excited as I am now.
Kulemin=awesome Sjostrom=awesome, Schenn quietly had a great game I thought. Not too sold on Stempy, but I think Poni is making his case to stay. I guess it all depends what the return for these guys could be or if they could be replaced with someone better.

feels good to have something to talk about again.

Stempniak — NO WAY. Too many 3rd liners, he needs a change of scenery.

3rd line – Sjostrom – Hanson – Kulemin would be amazing.

Loved Phaneufs game obviously but I think he will bring the best out of people.

I figured prior to puck drop that Schenn would be gunning to play just like Phaneuf. He was more physical, didn’t play with the puck too much (except one time which was almost ugly). But he bodied up and took his men out time and time again.

Sjostrom and Kulemin looked great and with Phaneuf on the ice 23+ games, that will mean more ice for our forwards.

Now out with XLB, Finger, Stempniak, Poni + Kabs (for top 6 + pick)

Had to write in here, I normally just read but today is a new day!!!! J.S. rocked last night, it’s about time we got a golie again. If I was RW I would tell Gustavson to sit down, shut up, watch and learn. Looking at the line up this morning and holy crap where did all the dead wood go. Oh yeah, Calgary and Anaheim, what were Bob Murray and Darryl Sutter thinking.

And talk about Phaneuf, stellar game and did you hear him after the game, the honour, the excitment, sounds to me he’s lobbying for a “C” on his left breast and I dare say, if he can bring what he brought last night every night… makes sense to me!

They may not get anywhere this year, but for the first time since the lock out, I can honestly say “look out next season, here we come”!

Nice writeup RG.. I simply cannot overstate the impact Phaneuf is going to have on this organization.. how on earth Calgary let him go is beyound me.. this is going to come back and haunt Calgary for a long time.. everything that was reportedly going on there could have been fixed and should have been fixed. Everyone else except Phaneuf and Iginla should have been considered as expendable in order to resolve those problems.. devaluing Phaneuf to the point where he was only worth Hagman, White, Stajan and Mayars is a brutal error on their part. this is the type of thing Toronto usually does.. I am sooo freakin thrilled we came out on the happy side of a deal like this for once.. its been a looong time..

    hey Ron Ron

I think success is two-fold. The insetion of new faces and new enrgery into a lineup, which was clearly evident last night

But also, the removal of a losing mentalitity. That is, players like Stajan, Blake, Toskala, Mayers, hagman, White….all have an aura about them. A……je ne sais quois….

I look at the players who left Toronto and I see losing. Sometimes you get rid of a peice of furniture. Not because it doesnt work anymore, but because you broke your toe on it one day and everytime you look at it, you think abotu how much your toe kills.

    That’s how I see these changes…..in a weird way

Was good to the see the team react positively with a strong effort. We need to give it some time though to see what happens when the team realizes they aren’t making the playoffs, and Giguere does in fact let in some bad goals…

I liked the trades because I felt both trades had a very large upside, without too much downside. They were sound moves.

Let’s just be cautious about getting too excited though. This team still has some serious weakness up front.

I love the way Kulemin has played most of this season. He might be my favorite Leaf right now. Also good to see Bozak at least showing some signs of what the hype was all about. Again, it is going to take time.

Was nice to actually be a little excited again about the Leafs over the last couple days.
