Keith Aulie has been injured indefinitely. Ryan Getzlaf will be a part of Team Canada. Brian Burke talks the favorite in the tournament, and the NHL has released its attendance records of this season. The numbers are shocking, read on to learn more of each of these brief news stories.

The Toronto Marlies have lost Keith Aulie indefinitely after he seperated his shoulder. The incident occurred when the 6’6″ defenceman was tripped into the end boards while trying to beat out an icing call.

Meanwhile, a quote from Bob McKenzie: “Jeff Carter has been told his services are not required. Getzlaf on the team.”

Ryan Getzlaf suffered a high ankle sprain that many felt would leave him out for quite a while; however, last night he returned to action with a 4 point night (2G, 2A) and it seems that ankle is just fine.

Brian Burke spoke out about Yzerman’s comments to suggest that Russian is the favorite. “Yzerman did the right thing. It takes the pressure off.” Burke went on to state “anyone putting money on this knows Canada is the favorite.”

Team Canada’s first game is on Tuesday against Norway.

The NHL released their average attendance records of this season and the numbers are shocking. Find out what teams went up, what teams went way down, how the Coyotes have faired, and how the Maple Leafs have placed despite a terrible start to the year.

    @ mattb:

Niedereitter has moved right up the draft into the top 12 or so. We woudln’t get him with a late 1st. I went through this with someone yesterday. Look back at the players selected in the 24-30 slot since 2003 (and exclude 2003, because it is a freak of a draft year). Now, the last two years are still up in the air, because no one has had a chance to prove anything, but if you look at 2004-2008, only five of 28 players are likely to stay in the NHL. Mike Green, David Perron, T.J. Oshie, Patrik Berglund, and Nick Foligno. Now 4 of those options sound pretty good, but what do you think the odds are we actually manage to turn a pick like that into one of these guys? Highly unlikely.

    @ LeafsRyan.:

Again, I’m not saying he will be moved. I don’t even want Lucic. I’m just saying, he’s not a 35 goal scoring power forward like you say. He’s more like a 20 goal scoring 2nd/3rd line guy. He had a standout year next to one of the hottest pairs in hockey, and his legend grew when he combined that with a few massive hits. He’s not worth anywhere near a package of Kaberle, Poni, and Hayes. That’s an absurdly bad deal for the Leafs.

I’m just telling you what the media is saying. The very least we will get now is a 2nd a prospect. With 10 teams having made offers, and at least one of them being serious enough for Burke to consider, it will get done. The price will soar on draft day when teams like Pittsburgh, and cap tight teams can get in on that too. He’s going to Nashville, and Blum is coming back in his stead.

    @ Cameron:
so now we should not want any late 1sts? Does that mean that picks in the 2nd round and beyond are worthless? How about picks 18-23, which are pretty close to 24…

I get what you’re saying, but ask any GM if they would like a pick in the top 30 (hell, 60) of a draft, what will their answer be? The odds of turning over a good player may not be great, but there’s still the chance that the pick turns out great, or at least a serviceable.

As for Nino, yeah, that’s a pipe dream, but still doesn’t hurt to hope ;)

If we get more than one second round pick, we need to draft a goaltender.

Was anyone out there shocked to hear former Leaf D. Moore was acquired by Mont for a second round pick!!!!he had like 9 goals 9 assissts in 50 gms.. Is that not alot to give up for a guy you could of had for free in Oct after the season started..
    *
We got a secound rounder for him when he was having a career year. That means the market for rentals has gone up.. Good for us with PONI Stempy and Kaberle …
    *
Therefore can we conclude that we could have maybe gotten a first rounder for White and Stajan EACH. Maybe for white as he is a RFA and Stajan for his point production. ….A second for Hagman as there is some money tied with him but reasonable production for the price.
    *
Therefore, does that change the scope of the Calgary Trade as it could look like we gave up alot for Phaneuf…I really like Phaneuf but at his salary Calgary may of been looking to spend their money elsewhere and needed to free up 6.5 mil a year.
    *
I dont think any other team in its right mind would pay up a 2nd for Moore this year. Florida just got lucky. Wish we had some of those trading partners. Oh yea we got someone to take Blake off our hands, Now we wish the same for Finger and hope not to make those terrible long term signings this summer. I rather see clever signings like the longer term with a min. salary tacked onto the players final 2 years to bring down the CAP hit. Hossa, Pronger, Luongo.

FLA got a 2nd for Moore because Gainey is an awful GM.

Gainey didn’t make this deal. Gauthier did.

    .
Wow, I could be wrong, but if Lucic ever develops into a 30-35 goal scorer I will eat my shirt. Does he seem like he has the same skill as Kessel? Not even close. He has a lot of intangibles that make him a good hockey player… size, aggression, stands up for team mates, but he is not a great goal scorer and he has never killed penalties. You are over-rating him, as it’s a lot easier to find his type of player than it is to find a player like Kaberle.
    .
I guarantee that if Boston phoned Burke and said they would trade Lucic straight up for Kaberle, Burke would laugh his ass off.

    @ mattb:

I’m not saying I wouldn’t want one of those picks in the late first round, i’m just saying that the offer of a 2nd and a prospect which is already standing for Ponikarovsky, might be better; especially if we actually like the prospect, and it looks like he will make the NHL (ie. Caputi or Blum).

But to answer your question, I’m pretty sure only 10% of 2nd rounders actually make the NHL (if that). So they aren’t entirely worthless, but it’s rare to have a real gem in that round. It’s a crapshoot past the first round. The strength of picks likes that comes their ability to create competition for jobs. Burke will have no problem finding colllege and european free agents to keep that area of the organization going strong.

What’s so shocking about those attendance numbers?

The franchises whom everyone makes fun of continue to struggle, and the Canadian teams continue to pretty much sell out.

Am I missing something about those numbers?

Ponikarovsky will net a 1st rounder, but we’d have to take back a bad contract for the rest of this year AND next year and maybe even beyond

Am I the only one thinking that we DONT want a pick for Ponko?

I want somebody who is a proven commodity and not some crapshoot at the draft. i dont care if its a first rounder or not, we need somebody who CAN play in the league not somebody who MAY play in the league.

Proven young player + a 3rd for Ponko. That is the starting price imo.

    @ Cameron:
Regarding the 1st vs. 2nd + prospect, it really depends on which prospect is being offered, and which team is offering the 2nd. If it’s Nashville offering Blum + 2nd, then ya, that’s probably more valuable because it’s most likely a mid 2nd with a good prospect. But a team like Pittsburgh offering their 2nd which is likely going to be from 57-60 and a mediocre prospect like Caputi (he really hasn’t done much to prove he’s a legit top 6 guy), then no thanks, I prefer the 1st where the crapshoot has more skill.

As for college/Euro FAs…you can’t build your team around these kinds of players. They pan out a LOT less often than draft picks. You can count on your fingers the number of College FAs/young Euros who came over and found more than limited success. Don’t let Bozak (and Hanson to a degree) fool you, finding legit talent in those pools is a lot harder than you think. And when you DO find that talent, they don’t always go to great teams. Remember, even Burke said that the Leafs would be limited in their ability to sign college FAs once they become a strong team, as there would be less chance for them to gain ice time with the big club.
