Assorted Sunday Notes

- Tim Brent and Jay Rosehill have been recalled from the Toronto Marlies, while Sjostrom and Mitchell are doubtful for tonight’s game against the Flyers. Brent is a player Burke knows quite well from his years in the Anaheim Ducks organization, whom the Leafs signed this past offseason. Tim has always been a very productive player at the AHL level who has yet to make that successful transition to the NHL. However, he’s only 25 years of age with a strong two-way game and some decent hands, so this may be his chance to surprise.

- After a slow couple of games, it looks like Nazem Kadri‘s right back on track. He had 2 assists in last night’s win over the Sarnia Sting, and now boasts multi-point efforts in each of his last 4 games. Here‘s a fantastic goal by Kadri from back in January.  Jesse Blacker had a brutal February with only 1 point in 8 games, but has rebounded with 3 points in 2 March games thus far.

- Kudos to Ponikarovsky who scored his first goal in his debut for the Penguins last night.

- NCAA prospect Jerry D’Amigo was named to the 2009-2010 ECAC All-Rookie team by the league’s coaches. Jerry has enjoyed a brilliant freshman year with 34 points in 34 games for RPI, topped off with an impressive World Juniors performance in which he was named one of Team USA’s top 3 players.

Just saw it more clearly on Sportsnet, and it looked all shoulder. The elbow comes thru late, just like Neil’s.
Im just not sold on this whole “head shot” business when it’s a clean shoulder, without charge/board.Media driven nonsense IMO by guys who never played the game.Same with fighting.
It’s impossible to read intent, and there are two many variables.
Listen, players cheat to draw penalties on hits. They dive, fake(Ruuttu last night-”eye gouge”) embellish and even turn into the boards last second to attempt to draw a hit from behind penalty, all the while putting their neck/spine in serious peril.
If the “head hit” gets legislated out the NHL,I may as well watch women’s hockey.Really.Hockey without hard, bone crunching hits isn’t hockey IMO,and such a rule will impact the game greatly.Hit’s will be embellished, players will fake whiplash.Wait and see, they’ve learned to fake everything else.
Not saying some of the hits are cringe worthy, like Savards. But the NHL would do the game a better service looking at the cinder block shoulder pads players wear today, before it makes such a drastic rule change.
There was no call on the play and I doubt a suspension.
For those who say it’s not hockey or this is a new trend,go watch Bruce Bell get wall papered by Wendel, cleanly.
    Did we not cheer then?
