Assorted Sunday Notes

- Tim Brent and Jay Rosehill have been recalled from the Toronto Marlies, while Sjostrom and Mitchell are doubtful for tonight’s game against the Flyers. Brent is a player Burke knows quite well from his years in the Anaheim Ducks organization, whom the Leafs signed this past offseason. Tim has always been a very productive player at the AHL level who has yet to make that successful transition to the NHL. However, he’s only 25 years of age with a strong two-way game and some decent hands, so this may be his chance to surprise.

- After a slow couple of games, it looks like Nazem Kadri‘s right back on track. He had 2 assists in last night’s win over the Sarnia Sting, and now boasts multi-point efforts in each of his last 4 games. Here‘s a fantastic goal by Kadri from back in January.  Jesse Blacker had a brutal February with only 1 point in 8 games, but has rebounded with 3 points in 2 March games thus far.

- Kudos to Ponikarovsky who scored his first goal in his debut for the Penguins last night.

- NCAA prospect Jerry D’Amigo was named to the 2009-2010 ECAC All-Rookie team by the league’s coaches. Jerry has enjoyed a brilliant freshman year with 34 points in 34 games for RPI, topped off with an impressive World Juniors performance in which he was named one of Team USA’s top 3 players.

Toskala started for the Flames today, and early in the second has stopped all 19 shots he’s faced…where the hell was that Toskala? I know people will tell me that it’s only one period and a little bit…but what the hell, Vesa? Couldn’t have done something like that whilst wearing blue and white? I actually can’t remember a time when he could hold the leafs in the first period this season. Credit to the Sutter boys for uniting the two most overrated finnish goalies in the league though…

How big was Dougy? Yes he still needs to fill out.

At some points during the playoff grind Gilmour was lised at 168lbs. Kane at 178 and Gionta at 173 don’t seem to have any trouble playing at the NHL level.

I don’t think we should be putting all this thought into Kadri’s weight. Kane and Teows did quite well in their rookie years and were just as big as Kadri is now. Call of Duty rocks!! PS3

Turns out Tim Brent wasn’t needed tonight with Mitchell good to go. Only Rosehill officially recalled. He’ll go in place of Sjostrom.

i think that the issue with Kadri’s weight is relevant to the style of game he plays. we don’t need him A) getting seriously injured in his rookie year, or B) playing a different style of game then the one that he’s played his entire life.

really looking forward to tonights game, hopefully the leafs aren’t too tired as this is their 3rd in 4 nights. but we’re a young team so im not too concerned.

i know some of you have been talking about orr, but i really want to give him credit. hes one of, if not the best, enforcer in the league and always gives entertaining fights. not only does he protect his teammates and energize the crowd, but he plays a physical hard-hitting game and is capable of drawing penalties from the others team top players (spezza last night for example). i also don’t think hes a defensive liability, and is even halfway decent in the offensive department, strong on the boards initiating the cycle and parking himself in front of the net.

hope he and rosehill punish the flyers tonight. we’re not making a push for the playoffs, but aslong as we play hardfought physical games itll be entertaining hockey.

A major hit to marc savard delivered by matt cooke. Best comparison is richards on booth. Another stretcher required.

with Cooke’s background I am suspecting a big suspension. Didn’t he already get one for a head shot this year?

Couldn’t see the elbow clearly, but if Cooke was all shoulder,is it much different than Neil on Mitch last night?
Maybe I’m old school, but if it’s shoulder and not a crazy charge/boarding then it’s fair play.
That’s why small players weren’t all that popular when the game was, well, less civilized.
Feel sorry for Savard, and if it really was elbow then Cooke will pay the piper.

    @ Uncle Otis:
regardless of elbow shoulderor even if he jumped and smashed Savard with his butt hair it is still clearly a head shot. he had tonnes of time to make it a shoulder on shoulder. Cooke should be gone fore the rest of the season for onion punching savards brain.
