Leafs/Bruins – 4-3 OT Win Live From ACC Press Row

KULEMIN with the game winner, and that’s all folks!!! Leafs win 4-3 in a thrilling overtime victory!

Now, wasn’t that an appropriate Torontosaurus Rex?!

That was the Leafs first OT victory of the season. (1-9)

******
It feels like a spring day, almost like a playoff date.
This isn’t a playoff game by any stretch .. There are some interesting scenarios playing out even before puck drop.

Here’s the game thread … you can also follow along on Twitter, @KatsHockey

This is the first game At home for newest Leaf, Luca Caputi (Now with his first goal as a Leaf!!).

This is the first game after the devastating hit my Matt Cooke taking out Savard.

This is the first game At home that will not feature Alex Ponikarovsky as a Leaf.

This is the first game in which Phil Kessel scores his first point as a Leaf against his former club (maybe) … (Yes! After a change in scoring on the second goal, he got his first assist versus his old team)

The Leafs have given up powerplay markers in consecutive games after going five games without letting in a power play goal.

Despite being one season removed from having won the Vezina Trophy this is the second consecutive start for Tim Thomas I the last games.

And the Puck has dropped .. I’ll be refreshing about every 10-15 minutes

Look, I’m not saying I’m a good luck charm, but I attend the game in the press box and a whole lot of good happens .. Caputi’s first as a Bud, Kessel registering his first assist .. Just call me lucky Kats.

End of Regulation 3-3

Overtime

The Leafs are 0-9 in OT and 2-3 in shootouts

THIRD

Lucic fires one off the post less than 2 minutes into the third.
Boston goes ahead 3-2 on a goal by former Olympian, Patrice Bergeron, his 13th. Assists to Recchi and Sturm (3:07)

Caputi comes so close to tying the score shortly after the Bergeron marker.

They announced attendance as 19,499 .. needing just 1 more for 500…

Luca Caputi scores his first ever goal as a member of the Toronto Maple Leaf! Score tied at 3-3 …

Official Scoring line for the Newest Leafs first:
Caputi (2) (Stalberg, Schenn)

Amazing how a hitter like Dion Phaneuf can ignite his teammates — nice hit Gunnarsson

A lot of confidence exuding from Caputi … that little dangle at the blueline cost an offside ..

Anyone else notice the sign by the Leafs bench changed to JB GOODHUE Boot Co. in the 3rd period? hmm….

Grabovski didn’t learn from the skirmish in Vancouver and starts the rough stuff .. the good thing, his wrist is better!

Dennis Beyak is on my left and animated! Andry Frost is on my right, loud and a nice guy!!!

The Leafs get an extra time point as they head to Overtime with the Bruins tied at 3-3.

Second Period

Three minutes in without a whistle
You could hear that dull THUD from a save from Gustavsson.
Great toe save by The Monster! (Am I wrong about him? Maybe … it’s been known to happen, but not very often).
13:00 minutes left in the 2nd — no sighting (a la Seymour Skinner)

10:34 into the second period, Wayne Primeau ties the game at 1-1!

Jeff Finger 12:01 for holding. Here comes that vaunted Leafs PK
Luke Schenn’s delay of game penalty (13:36) proves costly as the Bruins take a 2-1 lead on a goal by Marco Sturm, his 20th on the PP (assists — Recchi, Wideman)

Big miss by Beauchemin in front of the Boston net.

2:20 left in the 2nd … it may not seem like it, but this doesn’t have a 2-1 Boston feel from here … and it won’t any longer as Carl Gunnarsson ties it up!

Scored at 18:40 of the second. Official scoring play is:
Gunnarsson 2 (Kulemin, Phaneuf)

Tied at 2′s after 2.

********************
FIRST
(2:47) Boston on the board first, Mark Recchi, (Dennis Seidenberg, Marco Sturm)

4:23 in – Bos Wheeler (hooking) …
Leafs PP – 33/42/81

5:33 Mark Stuart (Tripping) — Leafs PP 0-1

4:20 of the first period question (in honor of ex-Edge DJ, Barry Taylor) — Would you rather have Gustavsson start more games than JS Giguere the rest of the way?

16:14 – Milan Lucic (hooking) — Leafs are now 0-3 on the PP.

END of the First Period — score is 1-0 Boston…

LA is a goalie away? I’m guessing you’ve never seen Jonathan Quick play. Either that or you vastly underrate him. Not to mention Martin Jones will be a solid up and coming goaltender. He’s absolutely rippin up the whl as an undrafted signed goaltender from the Calgary Hitmen, who at the moment is riding a 3 game shutout streak (just one of his many feats this season). Yea i know he gave up the game winner against the americans in the WJC, but trust me, kid has been in some big games. I played against him in his bantam and midget days, he’s always led the best of the best, to title after title. LA is by no means short on the goaltending depth chart (those two arent the only significant bright spots at that position for the kings either).

Kovalchuk would actually be a very good fit on this team. A big fast skilled left winger who scores over a point a game. Who wouldn’t want that for the next seven years. C’mon Burke get it done July 1. Think about it fans. Imagine you’re sitting on your patio July 1st when you hear Burke just sign Kovalchuk for 7 yrs. How do ya feel??? Exactly.
    7m tops!
I’d be willing to go up to $8.0 million and you’ve gotta think Kovalchuk would make alot more off of endorsments playing in Toronto than he would anywhere else!
It’s too bad Burke doesn’t believe in contracts with terms longer than 5 years. With Kovalchuk being 26, he could probably be locked into a 10 year contract where his salary in the last 2-3 years drops to a couple million, bringing his cap hit down.
    Years 1-5 – $10 million each = $50 million
    Year 6 – $8.0 million = $58 million
    Year 7 – $6.0 million = $64 million
    Year 8 – $4.0 million = $66 million
    Years 9-10 – $2.0 million each = 70 million
Total Average Cap hit per year would be only $7.0 million.
However it might be tough to convince Kovalchuk he is only work $2.0 million a year at age 34.

I would do that in a heartbeat.

I’ve never seen a more boner-laden discussion before; i still don’t understand why everyone, and i mean EVERYONE on here is so obsessed with Jordan Staal to the point where we offer each other the same trade over and over again.
Kovalchuk’s chances of signing here are slim, but slim because Burke wouldn’t give such a lengthy contract to any one player. My thoughts are that he goes to the L.A. Kings (who are a goaltender away from being stellar….Jonathan Bernier?)
Speaking of goaltenders. We need one. Whether its the old J-S Giguere, or a developed Monster. But we need one. Every good team has one. The good ones are hard to come by, and unless the Monster turns into what most of us think he will turn into, we are in DEEP trouble.

LA has some pretty good goaltending from Quick.

Burke said he won’t offer ANY player outside of Crosby and OV more then 5 years. So Kovalchuk is more a dream then Nash is now. If Kovalchuk will sign a 5 year 40mil deal then that would work, but he’s greedy and wants like 10 years. Sucks but its not happening

Burke keeps saying that July 1 is our draft day.

You show me one other player that will bring the kind of excitement Kovalchuk will.

Burke will get it done and it will be at a fair cap hit. The endorsement deals alone will make him very happy.

    @ Bring the Cup Home:
Kaberle is gonzo… he’s just going through the motions right now, last night he was a non factor in the game, Burke will definitely get the wheels in motion and create a bidding war between 3 teams for Kaberle and get a solid return and that talented/young established forward we are in need of.
As for Marleau.. he would be great, but it’s slim to none that he is signing here

Kovalchuck is still a young guy. Contracts that dwindle in salary like that are signed by guys who expect to retire before the contract is up, which he most likely won’t.

So if Nash was available this UFA class he wouldnt sign him over 5 years because he isnt crosby or ovechkin? Maybe not but I think he would get him because someone doesnt come along like that for free which the same could be said for Kovalchuck.

You didn’t just use a Calgary Hitmen/WHL goalie’s success as a precedent for a super goalie!

    ..cough…Justin Pogge…cough

Ofcourse i under-rate Jonathan Quick. He’s never been to the playoffs, and has all of the credentials to be a one/two hit wonder. I maintain that Jonathan Bernier is the jewel of that organization.

Saying otherwise in regard to Kovalchuk would be considered tampering and I’m sure Gillis would stick his nose in it and complain to the league.
