Fun With Numbers: Ranking Kessel’s Production

About a month ago, we took a look at Phil Kessel’s production, including the on-pace numbers for this season and (theoretically) projected 82-game statistics.

With 10 games left to go in the season, perhaps it’s time we re-visit and update those predictions — this time in the context of other “name” or “impact” players to see just where exactly Phil Kessel ranks, production-wise, among the league’s elite.

As many of you know, I have remained a firm supporter of the trade for Phil Kessel that saw three future draft picks go to the Boston Bruins. Future unknowns for a 22 year old sniper whose top-line abilities at the NHL level (read: 35-40 goal scorer) are known? Sign me up. Of course, I do recognize that places me in the vast minority among bloggers and writers (for example, a blogger for The Hockey News boldly endorsed Hall and Seguin as future superstars the other day – I wonder if he’s willing to loan out his crystal ball?).

However, how many of you would have been on board with that trade if the return was Rick Nash? Or Patrick Kane? Or Eric Staal? I’m willing to bet quite a few based on comments made on this site over the past year.

Let’s keep that in mind as we take a look at the numbers, shall we?

Current Production
Player Cap GP G A Pts PPG PPA SOG
Kessel 5.40m (’14) 60 28 23 51 8 7 268
Ryan 1.90m (’10) 70 31 25 56 10 7 224
Staal 8.25m (’16) 60 23 35 58 12 10 234
Nash 7.80m (’18) 68 30 29 59 9 11 230
Carter 5.00m (’11) 72 33 27 60 11 10 310
Semin 6.00m (’11) 63 33 38 71 7 17 242
Parise 3.13m (’11) 70 33 37 70 8 13 301
Kane 6.3m (’14) 71 27 53 80 9 17 231

On Pace Production
Player Cap GP G A Pts PPG PPA SOG
Kessel 5.40m (’14) 68 32 26 58 9 8 305
Ryan 1.90m (’10) 81 36 29 65 12 8 259
Staal 8.25m (’16) 68 26 40 66 14 11 267
Nash 7.80m (’18) 77 34 33 67 10 13 262
Carter 5.00m (’11) 82 38 31 69 13 11 353
Semin 6.00m (’11) 72 38 43 81 8 19 276
Parise 3.13m (’11) 81 38 43 81 9 15 348
Kane 6.3m (’14) 82 31 61 92 10 20 267

Projected Full Season
Player Cap GP G A Pts PPG PPA SOG
Kessel 5.40m (’14) 82 38 31 69 11 10 366
Ryan 1.90m (’10) 82 36 29 65 12 8 262
Staal 8.25m (’16) 82 32 48 70 16 14 321
Nash 7.80m (’18) 82 36 35 71 11 13 276
Carter 5.00m (’11) 82 38 31 69 13 11 353
Semin 6.00m (’11) 82 43 49 92 9 22 315
Parise 3.13m (’11) 82 39 43 82 9 15 352
Kane 6.3m (’14) 82 31 61 92 10 20 267

Taking a look at the comparisons above, a couple conclusions can be drawn:

  • Phil Kessel is having a near-identical offensive season to Rick Nash, for $2.4m less of a cap hit.
  • Kessel’s projected 82-game season results in identical offense to Jeff Carter, another name Leafs fans have discussed ad nauseum the past two seasons.
  • Over 82 games, Kessel would be on pace to outscore such franchise players as Nash, Patrick Kane, and Eric Staal, all of whom play with more established linemates.  He would also be in the same goal-scoring neighbourhood as Zach Parise and Alexander Semin.  As his young linemates continue to develop, Kessel’s assist count should rise to levels consistent with the aforementioned players.
  • Alexander Semin and Zach Parise are studs … and their contracts are up after 2010-11 … just sayin’.

The long of the short of it is, the Leafs got themselves one heck of a good player in Phil Kessel. Whether or not the trade ends up being lopsided is a matter for debate three to four years from now. How the draft picks sent for Kessel turn out is anyone’s guess at this point, although it is worth mentioning that scouting projections have yet to place either in the “superstar” category.

Meanwhile, Kessel’s production has come at a rate which places him — statistically speaking (as in, factually-speaking) — among the league’s best-known “franchise” scoring forwards, in the category just below that of true superstars such as Ovechkin and Crosby.

That’s a good thing, folks.

Looking forward to your thoughts as always,

Well, ya maybe, but you get where I’m goin with it I think. Pretty solid lines one through four, lotsa grit some scoring and not a huge cap hit as to leave room for a big signing if the lineup gets us some good results in the regular season and we need some giddy-up for the playoffs..that’s a big bunch of bodies as well.

at least that way, the Leafs aren’t chasing big dollar UFA’s and keeps the lineup balance(IMHO) and should leave some cap room..

Not sure the Ducks want to make another trade with Burke. Blake is absolutely atrocious and they no longer have Toskala.
Then again they dont have the 7 million that Giggy is going to get paid next year either.

That didn’t stop them from trading for MacDonald.

I think Burke has a great relationship with the Anaheim organization, so I’d say that a Ryan trade is very likely if they feel that they are given a fair return.

MacCabe and Kabs were one of the best pairings in the league. Leaf fans got all twisted up cause of MacCabes bluster in the playoffs and his increasing giveaways with the increasing hate one for him by the Leaf “faithfull”. He’s Florida’s Captain as we speak. Good enuf to be Florida’s captain but couldn’t hold down 7th D-Man duties in Toronto? C’mon…gimme a break. Leaf faitrhfull basically run him outta town…he gave us some real good seasons and deserves better than a good ole bashing. By the way, who ya rather have right now, MacCabe or Van Ryan? If Sundin wasn’t a Leaf MacCabe would probably be our Captain at the time.

    2010/11 Maple Leafs:

    Stalberg – Bozak – Kessel
    Kulemin – Grabovski – Kadri
    Mitchell – Hanson – Sjostrom
    Rosehill – Malhotra – Orr

    Kaberle – Phaneuf
    Beauchemin – Komisarek
    Gunnarsson – Schenn

    Giguere – Gustavsson

Analysis (IMHO): Young, Fast, Dangerous, Tough

1st Line= Stalberg is an ideal candidate for the 1st line. He’s a big body, has blazing speed, and has chemistry playing with Bozak. Two fast wingers with a play making center is a dangerous combo, especially with a sniper like Kessel in the mix.

2nd Line= Kulemin has had success playing with Grabovski, and his speed, toughness, and sound defensive play should compliment Kadri’s game. This line would be a force to be reckoned with, having both offence and grit.

3rd Line= Sjostrom gives you speed and is responsible defensively. Hanson can skate, grind it out, and can put the puck in the net. Mitchell is also fast, plays a solid all around game, with offensive upside. An ideal checking line that can chip in and score.

4th Line= Sandpaper. Teams would hate playing these guys. Rosehill brings energy and a willingness to drop the gloves. Malhotra is a big checking center with valuable experience. Orr is the heavyweight that will keep other teams honest.

1st Pairing= Kaberle is the smooth skating set up man, while Phaneuf brings an intimidating physical game and a deadly shot.

2nd Paring= Beauchemin plays a sound defensive game that compliments Komisarek’s rough and tumble style.

3rd Pairing= Gunnarsson is a defender with great poise and good hands, while Schenn brings toughness and determination.

In Net= Giguere is a big and experienced NHL starter, an excellent mentor for the promising Gustavsson who plays a similar style.

you guys are way off. this is how it’s going to go down:

    The Night Before the Draft:

    To Dallas: Tomas Kaberle
To Toronto: Jamie Benn, 1st in 2010, 3rd in 2011

Neuwyndyk is friends with Kaberle, and rumored highly interested. Given his plethora of left wingers, this is not unrealistic at all.

At the NHL Entry Draft (1st round):

To Anaheim: Jamie Benn, 1st in 2010 (DAL), 2nd in 2011 (TOR)
    To Toronto: Bobby Ryan

This is essentially the same return that Kessel got. Benn translates to a 1st round pick now that he is going to hit 20 goals in his first NHL season.

July First or the Start of Free Agency:

-sign Colby Armstrong, 3 years, 7.8 million (2.6 cap hit)

To Rangers: Mikhail Grabovski, Mikhail Stefanovich
To Toronto: Brandon Dubinsky, 2nd in 2011

This makes so much sense for both teams. Dubinsky and Drury do the exact same job, and so one is expendable, but Drury is unmoveable. Grabovski would provide a scoring center in their top six, which they lack, and also join a decent Russian base with Grachev, Anisimov, and Lisin.

    To Chicago: Jay Rosehill
To Toronto: Brent Sopel, 3rd in 2011 (TOR), 4th in 2011 (CHI)

Salary dump trade. Burke gets some picks back pre-emptively, realizing that he sucks shit at trade deadline day.

    2010/2011 Roster:

Nikolai Kulemin – Tyler Bozak – Phil Kessel
Viktor Stalberg – Nazem Kadri – Bobby Ryan
Fred Sjostrom – Brandon Dubinsky – Colby Armstrong
Wayne Primeau – Christian Hanson – Colton Orr

    Ex – John Mitchell

    Dion Phaneuf – Francois Beauchemin
    Carl Gunnarsson – Luke Schenn
    Mike Komisarek – Brent Sopel

    J.S. Giguere – Jonas Gustavsson

    CAP HIT – 57.233 million

The Marlies get headlined by a top line of Caputi / DiDomenico / D. Mitchell, and Burke adds two NCAA free agents to their top six (Bobby Butler and someone else).

IMO, there is a better chance at landing Getzlaf or Perry out of Anaheim (via trade for Kaberle) than Ryan. Namely the money factor – Ryan will be resigned, probably in the 4m range, which is less than the two aforementioned players.

The Ducks see Ryan as potentially a greater asset than Perry, and the suspicion is they may not be able to afford those two plus Getzlaf. Cap-wise they could work it out, but the sentiment is they want to set an internal cap that is far less than the actual cap … meaning one of the “big three” up front may eventually have to depart.

But given how highly they think of Ryan … my suspicion is it may be one of the other two who gets moved first (unless of course they trim other areas of the roster down, which could just as easily happen instead). Anaheim would rather have two top-tier forwards + a Neidermayer replacement, than three top forwards and no replacement for their aging star defender. And, from the perspective of building a balanced team, they would be right to take such an approach (again IMO).

Interesting thought. I would Love to see either Getzlaf or Perry in the blue and white. My first thought is i would want getzlaf over perry for sure but latley i’m really starting to like Bozak with kessel and with Kadri coming up as another C unless he changes to the wing were gonna have to many down the middle for the top two lines. Perry can play both wings which is a good bonus and a line of Perry-Bozak-Kessel would look pretty good.

To be clear — I don’t think we’re getting either of them, but I think either would be more realistic than Bobby Ryan, from a $$$ perspective. He’s a guy the Anaheim mgmt wants to build around.

    @ bluebud:

Yea, I don’t think it’s that unrealistic or anything though. The Grabovski trade makes perfect sense, and we’ve heard lots about how Burke would trade for salary players in exchange for picks. Signing Armstrong isn’t out of the question either, so really, the only questionable part is the Kaberle + 2nd = B.Ryan + 3rd part of the scenario.

If someone like Ryan isn’t available though, either directly, or indirectly (by trading Kaberle, and then packaging that return with our 2nd next year, or prospects), then I say just keep Kaberle, bury Sopel, and fill that spot, temporarily, with a free agent like Torres; or maybe make a play for Byfuglien. But yea, pazazu hit the nail on the head – it’s everything Burke has claimed he will do:

    1.) 1 RFA player a team can’t get resigned (B.Ryan)
2.) 1 UFA that fills a role very well and adds truculence (Armstrong)
3.) 1 salary dump trade that sees picks come to TO (Sopel)

And, it fulfills his top-six bottom-six role by letting Kadri take Grabovski’s spot (a tad risky), but putting a true 3rd line guy like Dubinsky in the bottom six center spot.

    @ Garrett Bauman:

How do you know that though Garrett? To me, Getzlaf and Perry are both far more impressive than Bobby Ryan (who doesn’t produce nearly as much when taken away from his two Canadian peers). I would cry tears of joy if Burke landed Corey Perry somehow. To me, Ryan is not the player that Perry is, and Getzlaf is one of the league’s elite centers – these two have won a Cup.

Also, I’m pretty sure that Bob Murray was the one clamoring to have Bobby Ryan traded a year and a half ago when they couldn’t fit him in under the cap. It was rumored they wanted to ship him to Toronto, alongside Mathieu Schneider, for Ian White and a 1st round pick. Murray, or someone in the organization, thought he was a bust. If that’s true, it certainly explains Ryan’s reluctance to come to terms on a new contract.

Also, Ryan will get much more than 4 million an extension. Eriksson got 4.25, and he put up basically the same numbers as Ryan with 20 extra games. Comparing Ryan to Kessel, it looks like he’s going to be about on par with Kessel’s numbers from his final year on the entry-level contract (maybe a tad under, since he will need about 12 extra games to hit the 36 goal mark, but will probably best 60 points pretty easily).

Finger is certainly not worth his contract, but was XLB that much better than him this year? I don’t recall one big game-changing hit (or even a memorable hit for that matter) from XLB this year.

I don’t know why RW didn’t try to squeeze as much value out of that big contract this year by playing him alot more, but as it sits now, XLB’s played 6 more games than him for reasons unknown to me: Finger has more shots, more blocked shots, more points, goals, etc. in 6 less games.

Wilson claims it is Exelby’s work ethic at practice that keeps him in the lineup. Also, whereas Finger has 2 more years before his contract is up, not giving Exelby a chance now would kill his career. Burke is all about the players, and being fair to them, and he and Wilson are trying to give Exelby a chance to stay in the NHL.

He still might find some interest in Finger. Imagine Finger comes in for about 5 more games before the end of the year, and gets his plus/minus up to about -5, and pots another goal, or maybe a pair of assists. Suddenly, he’s not so untradeable. I think though, that Burke actually likes the idea of having Finger in the minors next year, as a reliable call-up incase of injury to someone like Beauchemin, Schenn or Komisarek.
