Panthers @ Leafs

The Leafs will be looking for their fourth win in a row (for the first time since February 2009) when they face off against ex-Leaf Scott Clemmensen and the Florida Panthers tonight.  Florida is one of the teams Toronto is trying to catch in its struggle to emerge from the Eastern Conference basement.  This should be a tightly contested matchup, as Florida fights to keep their playoff hopes alive and the Leafs look to win and come within three points of the Panthers.

Toronto will also be looking to extend a home winning streak of six games, as their play of late has been the longest stretch of consistency this team has seen all season.  The Leafs have taken two of three so far against Florida, but will be playing against Panthers backup Scott Clemmensen for the first time this season.  The Panthers are scrambling to get within reach of the playoffs and are riding the hot goalie (Clemmensen made 29 saves for the win against the Lightning on Sunday).  While it’s a long shot (3.5% to be exact), Panthers coach Pete DeBoer says his team isn’t going to give in just yet, “We’re still in the hunt here. We’re not mathematically eliminated. The way we look at it, we’ve got to win maybe 10 or 11 in a row here. Stranger things have happened.”

Florida is no stranger to winning games at the ACC, as they’ve done so in four of their last six trips to Toronto.  Because of this, the Leafs will need to get on the Panthers quickly, displaying their newfound energy and drive.  They’ve done so successfully in the past five games, scoring first in each of those and going 4-1.  By all accounts, Dion Phaneuf is leading this charge and our young team is finally finding their identity.  They’ve used their speed to forecheck, create turnovers, and capitalize on their chances.  The first line has been dominant as Phil Kessel (6 G, 3 A in his last 7 GP), Nik Kulemin (4 G, 6 A in his last 8 GP) and Tyler Bozak (3 G, 5 A in his last 6 GP) are all on fire.

Of course, this young squad owes a lot of its recent success to much-improved defensive play.  This begins in goal, as both J.S. Giguere and Jonas Gustavsson have allowed Toronto players to finally have some confidence in their netminder.  While Giguere has made mistakes, his veteran poise has been on display as he remains calm and provides solid tending.  Moreover, Ron Wilson’s alternating of the goalies has worked wonders for Jonas Gustavsson.  The stressful carousel with Vesa Toskala in the early portion of this season always left him wondering if a mistake would relegate him back to the bench.  Now that Jonas knows he will play every other game, he has finally settled into a rhythm (crucial for any goalie’s success) and won his last five starts.  As expected, Giguere will get the call tonight.

by the way, the leafs have gotten 40+ shots on net in 12 games so far this season and have only won 1 of them (the game against edmonton a week and a half ago). i don’t think it’s really a case of the opposing goalie playing so well (except in roli’s case when the leafs got 61 shots) as much as it is the leafs taking lots of outside shots, not getting enough traffic, and just being blocked out by the defense.

I’d sign him and trade Komi. Volchenkov reminds me of Dmitri Yuskevich.

    @ zoonpolitikon

C’mon man, they have a right to boo. I wouldnt personlly, but some of those fans have probabaly gone to alot of games in the past 5 years, but have not attended a playoff game. I wish the place didnt sell out every night maybe they would get shit straightened out. I am hoping this late season surge is something to look forward to, but if they wanna boo, then boo. This was a huge game when it comes to trying to get out of the bottom 2. Brutal.

That was actually Gagne that got nailed from behind by Volchenkov, and boy was Gagne ever pissed. He got the 2+5+10 package for jumping Volchenkov afterwards.

Phaneuf knows how to score.. He has a 20 goal season, a couple 17 and an 11.. He’s been cooling off but once you have that touch you never lose it (at such a young age). They really need to watch video or something and find a way to make our weapons more useful on the PP. Kessel’s snipe, Dion’s cannon and Kaberle’s shots/plays could be way more effective. I’m sure Wilson & company are going to work on that because this PP won’t cut it for next season.

    @ Darkjester:
To me our PP is in a huge state of transition with Dion being here and Kessel not being used properly. I’ve been really disapointed with Kaberle on the PP, he’s not QB’ing it like he should and he’s not made any real nice set ups as of late. I’m also disapointed in how Kabs has failed to set Phaneuf up for some bombs in close on the PP… not happy about that.
Still pumped for next year.. take out Wallin and Lundmark from last nights line-up << then put in Kadri / Ufa – Torres or Armstrong/
that's 12 right there, if the forward who comes in the Kaberle trade it NHL ready who gets sent down to the the Marlies ?? Hanson?.. that's probably likely.
Then again Grabovski could be moved so….

    @ Schenn:
It’s because Kaberle has been sub par with his QB’ing of the PP.. he’s barely set up Phaneuf for any big one timer’s or chances, really disapointed in Kabs play on the PP

Maclean was baffled that Florida is still trying to win.. they need a pick like a Hall or Seguin.. oh well, stupid franchise
now we can only maybe catch Carolina or NYI, these teams are really baffling…come and take the 29th spot, we don’t want it.. don’t any of these teams want this pick????

I think the Leafs will sigm D-man Paul Martin UFA from NJ come July 1st to be Kaberle’s replacement (Kaberle will be dealt at the draft IMO). Wilson said Martin was a big loss for the U.S. Olympic team last night during his press conference.

I also think by game 40 next year the Monster will be our #1, I could see him playing 50 games next year and Giggy playing 32.. he just seems to have more ability in him to steal games for us and come up with huge saves.. giggy’s reaction to quick chances and tips seems a bit off from where it needs to be. Monster is going to have a great year next season, Gigure will be good and overall our goaltending will be much more consistent next season

For the first time in a while, the kids were really outworked last night. They seemed a bit in love with themselves and were getting a bit too cute with weak, no look passes (I am talking about you especially, Grabo.)

They lost a lot of battles on the boards, had trouble getting the puck out of their zone and could not sustain any real pressure.

They needs to stop reading the press clippings about how good they are and start remembering that they are fighting for next year’s jobs.

    @ Bob is your uncle:
you’re right Phaneuf and others are responsible as well.. totally agree, I just think Kaberle has not been aggresive enough out there on the PP and is too quick to just dish it off right away…

some have mentioned Paul Martin, but he would be too much of a cap hit…
