    I think that Gunnarsson will be the perfect fit to replace Kaberle on the PP with Phanuef, great skating can pass and shoot the puck well, once he puts on the weight and gets more games under his belt he’s are new Kaberle, plus he has a more physical game then Kaberle.

    I love his coolness. He and Kulemin should have a staring contest.

    if JFJ can get Dale Mitchell, Didomenico, and Gunnarsson without a first or 2nd rounder; I wonder what Burkie can do…

    Gunnarson has definitely been one of our most improved players. Once Kaberle is moved, Gunnar should see lots of ice time. I don’t see Burke adding anymore top end Dmen. This should give Luke and Gunnar lots of time to develop. Carl has become increasingly more reliable and I don’t worry about him with the puck like I used to. If confidence continues to increase on our backend… next season it will be a monster.

    @ FatassJackson:

    I think JFJ has always been recognized as having a good eye for talent, at least draftwise. The knock on him was that his trades weren’t really balanced and he didn’t seem to understand that no-trade clauses weren’t pieces of candy to be given out. Hence his current role as a scout. As we see a lot of his picks have shown positive signs.

    Contrast that with Burke who has pulled off great trades, has shown questionable drafting. Leaving aside a number 1 draft pick, there are questions of his 3rd round choice (Devane) although admitetdly he’s drafting towards a certain style.

    While JFJ’s picks were generally “skilled” picks that were hit or miss, (see Kulemin and Tlusty) BB goes for the edgy players that may be likely to play but on 3rd & 4th line roles, or 5/6 D-man.

    @ Schenn:

    I think so much of it is just a fuckin guess for scouts. Once you hit later rounds, somebody will always look like a star and some wont. Just a dart at the board…….

    jfj is great at the draft. would have also loved to have made him director of scouting and handed the draft duties over to him. just keep him away from the trade phone and the contract negotiations.

    @Bring the Cup Home

    i totally agree with, you jfj was the worst gm ever but his scouting record was actually quite good but his development process was aweful he brought tlusty up way to early tlusty should be with the greyhounds for another year instead of the marlies or leafs at 19… all that said his firing was handled really poorly it shouldve been done with some more class regardless of how aweful he was and they shouldnt just demoted him to an assistant in scouting also i think we should hire mats sundin as a european scout! but all that being said whoevers been running the scouting department must be doing one heck of a job latly i mean i think as leaf fans the 2008 and 2009 drafts will be some of the best in team history

    Not after the way this city chewed him up. There was no choice but to let him go. You can’t tell a President that you’re firing him, but its okay because he can now work for the guy they’re replacing him with. JFJ just wasn’t ready to be a GM, and the MLSE knew that when they hired him. That’s why his hands were tied when it came to hockey decisions, he needed to get board approval first.

    Anyone have a track record on Nonis as a draft day guy?

    JFJ wasn’t the guy out scouting players… The Leafs definitely drafted well during his tenure. But their draft record overall for the last several years has been decent.

    Keeping those prospects… Well, that’s a different story.

    He would just need a big power forward on his line since he is small.
