Pre-Game: Rangers at Leafs

Pride, youthful enthusiasm, new contracts and job opportunities for next season continue to provide more than enough hop in the Leaf step as they look to make it eight wins in their last ten and seven in their last eight at home when they play host to the Rangers at the ACC tonight.

The situation for the Leafs‘ quest to climb out of the league’s bottom three is this: Edmonton are comfortably in the rear-view at 55 points, eleven behind the Leafs with only eight to go. With 16 points left up for grabs, the Buds need to make up four on the Isles and five on the Canes. A bit further up, Columbus and Tampa Bay sit six ahead while the Panthers lie five ahead with a game in hand. With a little misfortune on the part of two of the above, something along the lines of 12 or 13 points could vault the Leafs all but clear of the Taylor Hall sweepstakes.

These teams meet for third time this season with the Rangers taking both outings by a cumulative score of 11-3. Important to note, however, is that both losses coincided with the Leafs’ disastrous season-opening slump in October as the clubs last met October 17th. The Rangers find themselves in must-win scenarios from here on in as they sit three points back of Boston for the eighth and final post-season seed with a game less to play.

Jonas Gustavsson draws back in between the posts as Ron Wilson rides the hot-hand. Gustavsson, clearly excited after the morning skate to be going head-to-head with compatriot Henrik Lundqvist, is seeking his seventh straight win as he shows promise heading into next season now seemingly adjusted and comfortable in the NHL net.  Gus has posted a .950 save percentage and 1.29 GAA in his last three starts.

Speaking of promise and excitement for next season, Kessel‘s current form of seven goals in his last seven has us all wondering what heights he can reach in a full season in 2010-11. Kessel looks to break the 30-goal plateau tonight in his 63rd appearance of the season. The Rangers have had his number throughout his young career, however, reducing the 22-year-old to a single marker in eleven appearances against. With his  team sitting second last and running out of schedule, Burke has to be ecstatic with Kessel’s play as of late.

Phillionaire will line up alongside Bozak and Kulemin, of course. The trio has given Ron Wilson a consistent go-to offensive option over the last ten or so games, with each member posting a point-a-game or more over the stretch.

Rookie Blueshirt  Michael Del Zotto of Stoufville, Ontario is one to watch as he’s been an offensive threat from the blue line as of late, with five points in his last three.

Wayne Primeau and Jeff Finger will sit as healthy scratches.

    @ Jordan:

Kessel and Hall are the exact same player – selfish, sniping wingers. Kessel is pretty much a lock to be a 40 goal scorer, with potential to hit 50. How much better could Hall possibly be? Is he going to be a 60 goal scorer, with potential to hit 70? Is he going to be better than Ovechkin? Because if not, then what difference does it make?

The only difference is that Kessel is 3 years older, proven in the NHL, and is starting to shed some of those selfish personality traits on and off the ice. It’s all a moot point anyways though, because the Leafs are going to catch the Panthers, and either the Islanders or the Hurricanes or the Jackets, and the debate will become ‘who is better, Kessel or Gudbranson?”.

    Kessel >>>>>>>>> Gudbranson

I had no problem with people, myself included, talking about the UFC last night or anytime a big event is on. However, that was last night and it doesn’t need to be discussed anymore, let it go.

And anybody who is saying we shouldn’t be talking about it, is simply bringing the subject back up!

    @ Seriously:
lol.. that’s ridiculous to say that Hall/Seguin will be better than Kessel, gimme a break
explain why?.. how?, Kessel is only 22 and will add weight, presence, more smarts… pretty damn good if you ask me.

Hall and Seguin are way overhyped.. neither will be what Kessel is and what he’s going to be… comon

    @ Jordan:
i think Grabo creates more chances with his energy, speed and enthusiasm (more of a skilled grinder with alotta heart)..but Bozak is more diligent with his hands, with a little bit better 1 on 1 skills due to the way he positions his body on the move not to mention hes obviously a wizard on draws. Both guys definitely bring something very valuable to the team for sure.

Seguin = Cody Hodsgon IMO. Not super fast by any stretch, with very good hockey IQ and smarts at both ends. Hall is a low skater with a long stride with tons of power but off balance alot of the time (dont need to mention hes a snipe in tight). Both will be solid players in the future, but i think what Phil Kessel brings, addresses exactly what we wanted with our first anyway, which was definitely not a guaranteed star before the season started. Kessel possesses a shot these kids will never have, similar to what John Leclair used to utilize (Kessel is a faster skater mind you). I dont think you can really answer the question of the trade until a few years down the road, but i think its much beyond the trade itself. Its kind of like taking a loan from the bank, you take what u need, but pay a little extra in the end, but still, the money u took out, is still vital in moving forward. Its not about the hypothetical who’s that we traded, more so as the value we got moving forward, that being said, im definitely sold on Kessels ability to be a key contributer for us going forward for many years, love the addition.

The kessel deal TO ME is about %100 guaranteed skill. If we got Taylor Hall, everyone knows with our luck he would be Patrick Stefan, or Daigle. Imagine how fucked we would be if that happened? Our next 5 years would rely on Kadri…..thats it basically. I have seen toooooo much BS that went our way to take another chance.

    @ Ksavz:
well put….I would take Kessel over Hall/Seguin any day, so i’m happy where we are moving forward. I hope we can get to at least the 28th spot but if Boston gets Seguin I could really care less

kessel is a true sniper and hopefully he rounds out his game alot more. in the aspect of scoring, he’s 22 years old and on the verge on his 2nd straight 30 goal season. but his defensive end of the game needs alot more work….everyone has to remember we needed scoring this year, not in 3 years with a 1st round hopeful…..right now we have won this deal, move out of the bottom 3 in the standings and we have a better chance at putting this to rest. fuck boston i hope whoever they pick turns out to be a 2010 edition of alexander daigle

How can you perfer Hall though? He hasnt played an NHL game yet. Its one thing to dominate in junior, and another against men who are much larger then you. Hall has put up identical number to what Kessel did at the same age, so why think he will be better? Because of the hype? Because hes Canadian?

all I can say is remember Alexandre Daigle, Doug Wickenheiser, Brian Lawton, number ones overall and average NHL players

Oh, and I laughed at Sens fans for years about the Daigle pick…you could see in junior that he was a bust just waiting to happen…
