Burke Finally Gets Brayden

Irwin that is. It was reported last night that the Maple Leafs had agreed to terms with 23 year old free agent forward Brayden Irwin, a former teammate of Viktor Stalberg at the University of Vermont. Irwin is Toronto native power forward, standing at 6’5 215 lbs, but does possess a bit of skill, a good shot and skates well for his size. He had a breakout 2009-2010 campaign in which he recorded 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points in 39 games played, totals that would surpass his two previous seasons combined. Irwin also leads his team in shots, penalty minutes and boasts a team-best 55% win percentage in the faceoff circle. Irwin struggled through a terrible junior season, but Vermont coach Kevin Sneddon believed from the start of the year that Irwin had all the tools to become one of the top players in the league. Guess he wasn’t too far off.

While it’s not quite as high profile a signing as Minny’s Casey Wellman, it’s still a step in the right direction: the accumulation of free assets, in this case a player with some interesting skill and size. Personally, I’m still holding out for New Hampshire sniper Bobby Butler or my personal favourite from this year’s crop: Stephane Da Costa out of Merrimack College.

    @ Jordan:
yeah people better not start bitchin about Bozak next year when he goes thought a slump. He has already demonstrated he has the skill numerous times this season and i believe its unevitable that he goes thought some sort of slump next season. As for mitchell he needs to learn from Kulemin. His defensive game needs work he was a -16 last season and i believe -8 this season. Kulemin wasnt producing very well at the begining of the season but was always backchecking and giving a good effort. If mitch can work hard on his defensive game his points will go up as they did for Kulemin.

Thanks Alex, always nice to hear more about our new additions.
    .

On another note, I’m not trying to start a trade/don’t trade Kaberle conversation, but will say I can’t buy into the idea that Tomas is not playing well just to lower his trade value.

I noticed while looking at his game by game stats, that the real slide in his production has been since his return from the Olympics, something that has happened with a few skaters and goalies around the league.

Also, with Kaberle now having 7 goals, that’s only 4 less than his best. I would suggest, at least in part, that his lack of production lately has something to do with the fact that a lot of our forwards have not been finding the net. He can’t put it in for them. I hope he has a strong finish, gets back into the top 5 scoring defensemen, and has the best value should BB find a trade he can’t turn down. Or, barring that, comes back and has a great year with us. It’s in Burke’s hands now, and I’m not married to either side.

True. I posted something early in the season suggesting that if the college kids disappointed some of us this year, we could be seeing names attached to them like Bozniak(Stempy being the whipping boy at the time). The allusion to Stempniak seems less appropriate now. lol

I must admit in the past two games Grabovsky has played very well…I also must admit that I still don’t think he is going to put us over the top as a top two centre…With the signing today of Braden Irwin, we all can see what Mr. Burke is looking for…Size up the middle…I am hoping that trend continues in the off-season when I am sure that Tampa will unload Lecavier to allow Stamkos to be their leader, they have already put an “A” on his sweater, so time is ticking. Lecavier,Bozak,Mitchell, and Sjostrom/Hanson all have NHL size, Vinny just needs a new start, something like Dion Phaneuf…Imagine: Lecavier,Kessel,Phaneuf,Schenn, and Gustavsson on the same team…WOW!

Do you think Jagr would sign in TO?
How much $$ would it take?
Something like what Ottawa gave Kovolev?

the more of these free assets we sign the better. pieces like this can always get thrown into trades (ie. kaberle + braydon) down the line, so the more young assets the better. when they come for free, it is great.

bozak and gustavsson are the best examples of this. of course we are keeping them, but imagine what we could get in a trade involving either one of them. free assets = nice job burke. keep going.

It appears as though Bobby Butler will sign with the sens. From an Elliot Friedman tweet yesterday.

    @ Leafswillwincupsoon:
Clarkson is RFA so maybe a sign and trade, but I would be hesitant to give up the normal compensation for what Clarkson will sign a contract for.
