The Leafs are looking to post their third straight win as they roll into Pittsburgh for this Sunday afternoon tilt.  On the surface, this may seem like a run-of-the-mill Sunday game as there is no obvious importance in a matchup between the defending Stanley cup champs and our basement-dwelling team.  However, there are a multitude of underlying storylines that should make this a very interesting game.

First of all, this will be the first time Alexei Ponikarovsky suits up against his longtime club, the Maple Leafs.  Poni served Toronto well and the organization got spectacular value for the ’98 4th round pick over his years of service.  That being said, it’ll definitely be a bit strange seeing Poni in a Pittsburgh uniform, a sentiment he echoed himself, “It’s going to be, for me, a little bit more emotional playing against former teammates (and seeing) the Leaf uniform on the other side.”

Another storyline for this game will be the jockeying for position that both clubs are undergoing in the final games of this campaign.  The Penguins enter the game in a tie with the Devils for first in the Atlantic Division (although New Jersey has a game in hand).  Pittsburgh just locked up a playoff position, and will be looking to add a division title to another impressive regular season.

Conversely, the Leafs 8-2-0 record over their last 10 games has them in a position to move out of 15th in the Eastern Conference.  For all of us fans eagerly tracking our draft position, we still currently sit 2nd (ahead of only Edmonton).  However, a win today would put us just 2 points behind the 6th draft position (currently occupied by the Islanders, who do have a game behind).  With Columbus sitting in the 7th position (just one point ahead of the Islanders), the Leafs have the opportunity to catapult out of the “Taylor Hall range” of the upcoming draft.  Regardless, the Leafs look to continue their aggressive play of late and convince their critics that this is anything but an illusion.

Too bad Butler signed with the Sens, I know we can’t sign them all but he would have been awesome with us I think. I just wish he’d have signed with someone other than the Sens so we won’t have to see him all the time.

Yeah he has been excellent and is eligible for the award if recognized. If our entire top line as it stands right now can bulk up a bit and condition (especially Kessel) I see no reason to break them up unless they start seriously slumping. But man oh man is their chemistry just amazing.

agreed, lets hope RW doesn’t screw with them at the start of season next year like he did with Schenn.

Haha well we did get Irwin. I like Da Costa as I’ve heard several good things about him but some people seem to be knocking him because he is from France. He is coming out of the NCAA program so I don’t really see how that works but I still hope we get him.

    Bobby Butler F 39 29 24 53 20 0 1987-04-26 22 Marlborough, MA 6.00 180

    Da Costa F 34 16 29 45 41 0 1989-07-11 20 Paris, France 5.11 180

So he has 8 more points in 5 more games (Butler), and he is two years older. Seems like Da Costa could have just as much upside as they are both basically the same size but Da Costa is just younger.

Would anyone consider Mike Danton as a viable option for the Marlies?

    @Amoroq
If he is allowed back into the NHL/AHL system, and there is room for him, I don’t see why not. But if he takes up a roster spot/ ice time from one of our developing kids then no. But isn’t he attempting to get a degree or some shit like that which would keep him there for at least a couple more years? Isn’t that why they allowed him to play in the Uni circuit?

Anyone watch Part I of the Don Cherry story last night?

I almost forgot about it but just happened to turn the guide on at 8pm and was able to catch it from the beginning.

I quite liked it. Looking forward to Part II tonight.

Part two is TONIGHT!? I thought they were continuing it next week, thank GOD. I caught the last 45 minutes of it, and I really really enjoyed it for Canadian television.

Pretty obvious from what we’re starting to hear Coyotes either will have new owners, or the league moves them to Winnipeg NEXT year. Wow.

I have to agree with some that Hanson probably needs some time with the Marlies next year to work on his game. Stalberg needs to find an “inside” game, go to the dirty areas, in front of the net, use his size more. He kinda reminds me of Brad Boyes when Boyes was young. I think it will be 3-4 years before he really finds his groove and starts producing…hopefully we keep him around long enough to see him do it as a Leaf. A lot of people shit on Mitchell’s head, but I think for a second year guy, he’s not too bad…especially on the third line. I’d like to see BB get Torres in the summer with the idea of throwing him on with Mitchell and Caputi. I also agree that packaging Kabs and Grabs would get us a forward(preferably a skilled center) that is much better than Grabs, and Grabs ain’t bad. Bobby Ryan to me is a very long shot. The Ducks have lots of cap room to get him signed so I don’t see Ryan going anywhere, but I can see a deal with Dallas, Tampa, or St.Louis in the off season. One guy I’d take a gamble on is A.Giroux in Wash., heck even both A.Giroux and K.Aucoin(a little too small but can rack up points in the AHL) for that matter. If one or both can’t crack the line-up they would certainly be good assets to have with the Marlies, and I’m sure could be had relatively cheaply.

I think both Hanson and Stalberg need to work on their game. I don’t know if it would be better for them to do it at the NHL or AHL level though.

I think they can both be very effective once they learn to put all their tools together. Maybe additional AHL seasoning at the start of next year isn’t a bad thing for either? Guess it depends on who we bring in the offseason.

I always thought it’d be neat to put a pesty player like Torres, Armstrong or Hartnell on Kadri’s wing. Kadri is a pest himself, but he can do damage offensively. Pairing him with an equally pesty, big bodied power forward type winger…. I can just see a line like that driving other teams crazy.

(Particularly Ottawa, as they haven’t had a good reason to hate our players since Tucker, Roberts and Domi left)
