How Stempniak REALLY Became First Star

Former Blues and Maple Leafs, Lee Stempniak is the NHL’s first star of the week. “How?” I just assumed you asked. Quite simply, a young boy in the Netherlands just sacrificed a goat to the Gods over a copper caldron and down came the magical “wish demon” to provide the boy with three wishes.

I’m realy happy for Stempniak. It’s a shame he didn’t really have the supporting cast, nor finish here.

I wish him all the best, and I’ll be interested to see who he resigns with in the summer.

Yea i didn’t want to trade him in the first place. But good for him going to a playoff contender.

Looking forward to seeing who we grab in the 4th and 7th rounds *eye roll*.

HAhah….leave Crosby alone. Maybe he didn’t get his allowance from Mario yet.

    Good for Stempniak……and the Coyotes.

In his breakout 27 goal campaign in 06-07 Lee Stempniak had a 16.3% shooting percentage.

In 07-08 he shot 8.0 percent.
In 08-09 he shot 8.2 percent.
In 09-10 he shot 8.6 percent with Toronto before
In 09-10 he shot 30.2 percent with Phoenix.

Stempniak is not the league’s best shooter. For comparison here are the SPCTs for some good players (this year / career):

    Kessel 10.3 / 10.6
    Ovechkin 13.4 / 12.4
    Kovalchuk 14.7 / 14.8
    Crosby 16.7 / 14.7
    Stamkos 17.7 / 15.6
    Malkin 9.8 / 13.3

Lee Stempniak’s numbers are completely unsustainable. With his normal shooting percentage of 8% we’d expect to see Stempniak with three goals in Phoenix instead of the 13 he has. He’s been on a bizarre lucky hot streak and it probably has little to do with him as a player unless he decided one day to be terrible on purpose so that he could get traded to Phoenix.

I also wish Stempy the best. I also have to question RW’s system if he can produce this way. Its not always about the supporting cast, its about opportunity, confidence and a style of play that suits. Antropov seems to be happy. Blake seems to be happy. I’m glad for all of them, and the question remains…”why do so many succeed once they have left?”.

    @ Chemmy

He was never terrible in Toronto though. He was asked to be a gritty, responsible forward, who pushes the pace of the game, and works hard. He responded perfectly to what was being asked of him. The key with Stempniak, is, and always will be, having a playmaking winger on the wing opposite him. He click with Wolski just like he clicked with Kariya. Thing is, STtempniak just has a very specific niche. He needs to be complimented on by a solid playmaker, and he needs to be buried in depth. This was the case in STL and now in PHX.

    @ Waiting4LSC:

Blake isn’t doing anything he didn’t do here. If you recall, last year, a great deal of his points were racked up in a 20 game span. If Blake stays hot the last 5-6 games of the year, he could easily get up close to 50 points again. It would have happened here too. Antropov too. He’s not doing anything he didn’t do in Toronto. Go down the list, Kubina, a 40 point man with defensive flaws, wow, that sounds familiar. THe only exception’s are Mayers, Steen, and Stempniak.

Good to see nice things happen to nice guys every now and then. I’m happy for Lee Stempniak. He performed to the best of his abilities within a system to which he simply wasn’t suited. In Phoenix, it’s as though he was tailor-made for Dave Tippet’s system.

As Cameron mentioned, with a playmaker on his line, and team depth reducing pressure, Stempniak has blossomed.

If that easy formula works every time why did St. Louis trade him when his production disappeared?

Stempniak may be thriving but even so his production is the result of an insane hot streak. You guys don’t think Brian Elliot is one of the best goalies in the game despite rattling off two insane stretches of play, right?

    @ Chemmy:

He was PPG when they traded him. Then Kariya and Brewer went down with injuries, and they needed more bodies. It was a numbers game for them, nothing more.

    @ Chemmy:

I should have read your whole post before responding, ha. I don’t think anyone believe Stempniak is now an elite player. He’s still a gritty, grinding forward, who can score. He’s a less physical, more offensive Colby Armstrong. I’m just saying, to me, it was always clear that the talent, skill, and work-ethic was there with Stempniak. My only gripe is that Burke let the media dictate Lee’s value. I’m sure that there were a few GMs who knew Stemps would do just fine in their system (and really, it wasn’t like he was shit in ours), but couldn’t afford to pay a 2nd round pick for a guy who Pierre McGuire is telling fans everywhere is a worthless pile of garbage….

    To Hell with Lee Stempniak!

Stempniak as did Blake, personified what it meant to be the classic posterboy for underachieving Leaf failure. Let’s remember he was moved here initially by Cliff in an attempt to bolster a weak Leaf team lacking offensive capability.

This failed trade cost us a promising Alex Steen (62-23-23-46) and an injury prone Carlo Colaicovo(62-5-22-27).

The argument that Stemps provided or played with grit is basically laughable. Please this is Lee Stempniak we are discussing, the words Stempniak and grit are not synonymous so please let us end this debate.

Furthermore Lee Stempniak neither needs nor deserves your well wishes -again this is a player we sacraficed alot to obtain and in divesting ourselves of this “failure” we have essentially ONLY recouped a bag of pucks and a small already half eaten popcorn – (4th and 7th rounders respectively).

As for his production with Phoenix…

The only reason Stempniak has produced much of anything with Phoenix does not so much relate in my opinion to having a play maker to play with as does the fact that he is in a contract year and found himself in a situation come seasons end of potential financial irrelevance.

This my friends boils down simply to a question of dollars and cents.

Lee Stempniak is in a contract year, nothing more and nothing less. He is playing hard now only because he knows if he doesn’t he cannot command more money when he’s on the open market. This tenure with Phoenix was Stemps only gasp at making more than maybe 1.5 to 1.75.

DO NOT be fooled by Stempniak’s bloated production, Stempniak is garbage and will continue to be garbage for whatever team adds him to their roster moving forward. Always remember he was awful for us and did little of anything for our team in retrospect. (*For proof name one truly positive Stempniak moment off the top of your head if you doubt this.)

I do not wish Lee Stempniak any success in the future, he played small time hockey here when only half of what he is doing currently in Phoenix was expected of him.

He wasted a roster spot and cost us far too much money against the cap for his spotty, sloppy, uninspired play.

Good riddance Stemps, congratulations on deciding to play a little hockey, we all know it won’t last long so enjoy it while you can. Maybe with your recent play you’ll be able to sucker some poor rube of a GM into signing you for something more than you are acutally worth…

As for me I wouldn’t offer you more than the 1.5 to 1.75 we both know your worth.

All the best Leafers and Leafettes,

    @ realitycorp

Well,in my opinion, this post is a real classless act. With 2 new blogs up, it’s unlikely many will read it though.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6Zeusc-aGc&NR=1

It took about half a second to think of this shift, an example of the effort Stempniak put in here. There are people on this site who complained about Stempniak and then after seeing a live game at the ACC, posted how impressed they were with his effort, and that he was the hardest working player on the team. His own teammates appreciated Stempi, as you can see in the video.

If you look in the archives here you won’t find anyone who regretted trading Steen and Colaiacovo when the trade went down.

Again this is a classless act of piling on after the fact, not worth the time is took to read it or write it. Sometimes reality bites, but in this case Realitycorp bites.

Sorry Bob in this instance it’s a case of 2 little 2 late. In this clip we can see Stemps (albeit admittedly effectively) killing a penalty, this however was certainly not what he was brought here to do.

Remember also that during this timeframe the Leafs historically speaking were well within the top 15 worst penalty killing teams in all of recorded NHL history. Not exactly a statistical feather in the elite penalty killing Stempniak’s cap.

Sorry Bob the only thing classless in all of this was Stempniak’s play during his brief tenure with the Blue and White. He was brought here to score goals and by scoring a mere 25 in 123 games we have all the statistical evidence necessary to villfy him.

So to hell with Stempniak again I say Bob, perhaps you enjoyed his marginal 3rd line play, I however did not.

Sometimes reality does bite but in this case the only thing bitten off was something far more than Stempniak was prepared to chew.
