Pre-Game: Phil Kessel vs. Tuukka Rask

Phil Kessel has but one point in five games against his former side while recurrent Leafs nightmare Tuukka Rask, league leader in goals against average and save percentage, stands 3-1-0 against the club that drafted him. This match-up tonight marks the final opportunity this season to get a little bit of that sour taste out of the fan base’s collective mouth and perhaps symbolize that we, too, can make good trades.

Boston has everything to play for tonight. Jockeying for 6th-8th positions in the playoff picture with Montreal and Philadelphia (who hopefully by some divine miracle will all end up missing the post-season), Boston is also far from clear of the Rangers and Thrashers, two teams on the outside looking in and hot on the B’s tail sitting just two points back. Not only do the Bruins find themselves battling for playoff security but they’re also helping determine the position of their own draft pick. A victory tonight would be a near fatal blow to the Leafs quest to climb out of the Hall-Seguin sweepstakes, making it the very definition of a “win-win” from the Bruin perspective.

Leafs fans can take some solace in the fact that the Bruins are struggling hard in the goal-scoring department, thanks in part to Kessel’s departure and only exacerbated by Marc Savard’s indefinite absence from the line-up. The Bruins have only scored once in their last two after a 1-0 win over New Jersey and 1-0 loss to the Florida Panthers.

The Leafs are 6-3-1 in their last ten as the success of the post-Olympic break youth movement continues to breed hope among the fan base. Viktor Stalberg is the Leafs’ hottest hand at the moment with three goals in his last two games.

A win tonight will even the season series at three wins a piece, or give the Leafs’ the slight edge depending on your view on shootout losses. Here’s hoping Kessel lights the lamp for the first time against his former club and that the Leafs chase Rask from the net. To see Kessel help ruin the B’s draft pick and playoff hopes would be a triple-whammy of awesomeness.

Brayden Irwin will feature again tonight on a line with John Mitchell and Luca Caputi.

    Off-Topic: Trade idea

    Virgin proposal – be gentle.
Cameron – feel free to suggest a 3-way.

Does Van need to dump salary in off-season? So as not to beat a Kab-Hodgson drum again (although someone else could…), what about:

    Shayne O’Brien.
Port Hope kid. 26 years young – still. Contract up at the end of year. Not sure what he’d be asking for but he’s been in and out of the Vigneault doghouse (TSN link: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=316688 )
    - rumour of bar-hopping and was late for practice – and is just the guy that Burkie could straighten out (and I think BB drafted him?). Tough, some offensive upside, we get a bit younger and would work a LOT better than Beauch or Finger, IMO. As Beauch won’t likely go til after next year (for previously posted reasons ad nauseum) – we give them Finger and a half-decent prospect or 3rd rd pick as salary dump rather than bury Finger. Finger is good when played more and would work in Van).

to Van: Finger + 3rd 2011 (NOT this year!) or half-decent prospect

to TML: Rights to Shayne O’Brien

We’d still have to sign him, but he’d likely take a “hometown discount” of some minor variety. A friend of mine plays golf with him in the summer in Port Hope and he’d love to play here. New start for him too! Haven’t checked the numbers yet, but something to kick around since a new thread hasn’t started yet (hint hint…)

I’m going to guess of the charts here but what is the possibilty of Burke standing pat and trying to rape another team like he did with the Phaneuf deal, mid way through the next season, saving all cap space and players until. Going on a limb but I thought I see what comments I’d get.

I totally forgot it was Easter…

So THAT’s what all this bunny shit is in room.

After you all stuff your faces, kick around my proposal above:
Dump Finger (cap $$pace on D freed instantly) and acquire younger, cheaper, better, LOCAL boy O’Brien.

I’m not try to pick a fight with ya man, but please explain to me how Shane O’Brien would work out better the Beauchemin? Does O’Brien play against the leagues best, has he got Cup experience, is a leader on and off the ice?
    .
All this hate at times for Beauchemin is baffling. Every player, on every team gives the puck away, why is it when Beauchemin does it, he needs to be run out of town? Beauchemin’s early inconsistency was the same as Komisarek’s, trying to do too much and playing outside his game. Since he’s been paired with Phaneuf he’s settled down and played the defensive style he’s always played. He’s only had 2 assists since Mar. 1st, but he’s also a +2. He’s also only had 3 minors in that time, which means he’s not getting beat and having to make up for his mistakes by taking hooking and tripping penalties. An amazing stat for a dman.

Im not saying Kulemin isnt better then Grabo, but regaurdless what he makes, theres no fucking way Kulemin deserves more then 3 mil. Its great to like him and overrate him a bit because we brought him up, but fact is he has been WAYYYYYY too inconsistant this year. Your all forgetting he had only 13 points in the first 38 games. Thats fucking pathetic even on this team. Then after we are out of contention he plays well?. Not good enough to me but hey, you guys are the ones who are gonna be pissed when our team is still mediocre. I mean jesus, we dont want to pay our bottom 6 3+ mil, and even after his good play he still only put up 23 points in 37 games. Thats a total of 51 points in a full season if he continues. Thats not good enough for top 6. Untill he scored 55+points and shows up when our team is still contending then why overpay? and dont say its not overpaying because bottom line is you want to pay him like a top 6, and 36 points in 75 games just doesnt cut it

People not liking Beauchemin is simply expecting too much from him from the start. Hes a good top 4 defence on any team in the league, thats it. Nothing more nothing less

    .
As for Kulemin, I agree, he’s really come on lately, but he’s still young and still learning. If I was a betting man I would guess he’ll be back on the 2nd maybe even the 3rd line next season if Burke can get himself some scoring.

Kulemin won’t make over 3mil, but I can see something in the 2.25-2.5 range. Beauch is alright but far too inconsistent to be playing top 2 minutes. He does look a lot better since the Phaneuf deal, doesn’t seem to be making horrible pinches as often

Look at David Krejci for example. Hes the same age as Kulemin, and when he was RFA after his second season he scored 73 points and he only got 3.75mil. Think about that. Kulemin is nowhere near what his talent was last year

Beauchemin averaged 24-25 minutes/game in Anaheim. It will continue in Toronto because that is his level of play.

Beauchemin is just fine. Makes a ton of good ‘little’ plays that tend to go unnoticed. More of an old-school D-man in his style, while trying to adopt to Wilson’s Pinch-crazy philosophy. Yes, makes the odd bad pinch but that’s just decision-making & can be corrected. Been very solid as of late.

In terms of Komi, he’ll be an excellent addition to our D-corp next year. Struggled out of the gate, but played a few excellent games prior to his second injury. I look forward to what he adds to our squad. Tough & physical, sticks up for his teammates, a leader & makes a good first pass. If you’re looking for 50 pts, wrong guy – but a very good stay at home D-man in the traditional sense.

    @ Keon,
Maybe re-read my trade proposal more closely. My proposal was Finger + for a cheaper O’Brien to get rid of Finger’s contract and bring in a similar defenceman in the 1.75 range (half the cost of Finger, saving cap space).

As for Beauchemin – I would LOVE to see him return to the form he had before his knee surgery, during the Cup run prior to leaving Anaheim (he was INSANE!) but I’m not sure he’s gonna do it. Maybe next year with a few more minutes given to Schenn and Komi and less responsibility. I used to love Beauch but I find it hard to believe he should still be classified as top four with the number of giveaways he makes. He can’t be granted that on past performance alone. Granted the majority of his bone-head plays have been reduced since he realized he didn’t have to do it all, but there are several times each game that he has plain poor judgement, especially given his salary level.
Regardless, I don’t think he’s being traded, as Burkie likes him and doesn’t want to send the wrong signals to UFAs blah blah blah. We could use the cap room though. I still like him, but below Gunnarson on the depth chart next year.

    Phaneuf Schenn
    Komi Gunnarson
    Beauch O’Brien
    Aulie/Blacker

And that’s only if Komi returns better than he was this year, cuz when he played he often was worse than Beauch (again trying to do too much + with a shoulder that hasn’t been right since before he left the Habs)

what do you guys think of trying to get stalberg to play on the right wing? possibly having a second line of Kules-Bozak-Stalberg. If wilson is planning on trying Kadri with kessel then this mihgt be a good option and with the kabs trade you pick up a LW for the first line.

I think Stalberg starts in the Marlies to be honest. Hes only up because of our lack of depth and no way we have a chance at the playoffs with his 12 points in 37 games pace. Give him all the time he needs to get better/stronger IMO

    @ Jordan:
Unless he tears it up in preseason on a set line then i see him on the marlies. I’m aware he had a great preseason this year. Until we see the moves burke makes in the offseason its hard to pick line combos. I really wish i knew who burke was going after. I’d settle even for the info if its a C or LW.

Its gotta be a winger you would think unless Grabovski or Bozak is traded. I would almost bet Kadri is going to play up next year with the way Wilson and Burke are talking about him. We for sure need a top 3 winger IMO and a 3rd line center. I hope they look at Darren Helm. I dont think Hanson and Mitchell are a good enough 3rd line center on a contender and Im not settling for anything next year. I want the best possible lol

I really like the chemistry of th Kulemin-Bozak-Kessel line, I for one would like that line to stick because I think all 3 will get stronger in the off-season and really be a threat next season. I think finding linemates to gel with Grabs is a priority. I think Hemsky out in EDM would be a perfect fit for him but I doubt he could be had. Some of these young guys need to work on their game with the Marlies, and although he is a damn good player in the OHL, Kadri may find himself with the Marlies for a stretch, along with Hanson, Caputi and maybe even Stalberg…all depends on who BB goes after in the off-season. Maybe Stalberg and Kadri can gel with Grabs, who knows? But I am convinced BB and Nonis have their sights trained specifically on Torres and Armstrong. Both are perfect 3rd line guys who can get 15 goals each for ya and have some grit in their game. Mitchell may be the guy to center Torres and Armstrong, but I wouldn’t rule out BB going after Lombardi for that spot either. Kabs seems a certainty to be traded, something has to be done with Finger, and they need to address the goaltending issue as Reimer is the only guy worth mentioning coming through the system. Other than that, I just don’t see any real big names coming to Leafland in the off-season, and that may be a good thing.
