Week 24 Torontosaurus Rex

The Week 24 Torontosaurus Rex is ….

The award this week goes a player stepping up in the wake of the roster turnover and having started the season on opening night with the Leafs while splitting time this season with the Marlies.

The 24-year old winger scored three goals in Week 24, including his second two-goal effort of his young career. Rookie Viktor Stalberg (3-3-0-3) has seen his ice time increase a full two minutes in the four games since a 3-2 win over the Rangers, with a return to the power play.

Stalberg, similar to Tyler Bozak, had to learn that the grind of the NHL season as well as becoming pros was just as important as developing skills in the NHL. Stalberg played big minutes with the Marlies that he would not have received in the NHL, scoring 12 goals in 39 games (39-12-21-33) and getting used to the professional game at a high paced level.

And he struggled through periods of the schedule without making enough of an impact in games. This commitment to being a factor every game was a step in the Swede’s development and witnessed with a more physical game lately and better positioning relative to opening night.

With Stalberg, the physical, brash style that he needs to play to be successful takes time to develop against bigger and stronger opponents. Signs are positive in development and he’s coming along into the mold of a good power forward, but it’s a work in progress and a timely one.

For now, he’s shown enough to enter the final week of the season as the Torontosaurus Rex

******
An honorable mention should go out to John Mitchell (3-0-2-2) who lost his special teams time and playing a decent 13-14 minutes in the last two games, after dropping in ice time that bounced between 17-19 minutes. He was noticeable on the ice throughout the last two games, despite the decrease in ice time.

    @ LeafsRyan.:

But it’s the Stars who are chasing Kaberle, not the other way around. Wilson and Burke are working very hard to paint that picture right now. Wilson is saying if he had to start the season with this crew next year, he’d be happy. Burke is sticking to his guns about resigning Kaberle. Meanwhile, it’s Dallas reporting that they need to chase a puck moving defensemen, and need to scale back their payroll significantly.

    I’d be happy with a Neal/Kaberle deal.

Huge Neal fan. That kid breaks out with 35+ goals next year.

Doubt Dallas moves him straight up for Kaberle, but stranger things have happened.

It would probably make a lot more sense for them to simply pursue a Paul Martin type via free agency.

    @ Cameron:

Kaberle is a good passer and is patient with the puck. But he has always always lacked the instinct to score goals. His excuse for that is “it’s not my game” Well make it a fucking part of your game! Players are supposed to improve all parts of their game not just remain the same. Look at Crosby, he’s become a better goal scorer because his team needed him to score more goals. Why didn’t Kaberle do this?

I’ve loved Kaberle since he was a rookie but I think it’s time to move on.

If Kaberle is going to Dallas, it will be Brad Richards coming back this way, and I would be happy with that.

I hope you are right – but, never say never – If Burke can trade Ryan for Schenn +, he would make that deal. Personally, I would keep Schenn, and partner him with Phaneuf – absolutely scary long term.. But, if there is someone outside of Kaberle and Grabovski I could see Burke trading, it would be Schenn (again, much to my dismay)

If Schenn gets traded, I will be VERY angry. I know we have Phaneuf and all that, but Schenn is going to be a fuckin MONSTER in the very near future, I can feel it.

Oh dude – I am totally with you. I will write a long and extensive blog, absolutely fuming about the trade – and it almost doesnt matter (though it does) what they get in return. Facts are though – Burke did not draft Schenn (and yes, that DOES matter), and he has stocked his D with his own, and expensive acquisitions (Phaneuf, Beachemin, Komisarek). If the right deal comes along for Schenn, that will improve their offense, Schenn is gone. I surely hope this does not happen, but, it should not surprise anyone if it does…

It’s probably been mentioned already, but Kadri had another solid night with a goal and 3 assists against the Kitchener Rangers bringing his point total to 22 in 8 games!

The more I read about this kid dominating the OHL playoffs, the more I like the looks of a Kadri/Bozak/Kessel top line with Kulemin, Grabovski and either a Free Agent signing or whoever is brought in on a Kaberle deal.

Ya no way we trade Schenn unless it’s for Stamkos or someone of that caliber. I want Schenn to stay in the White and Blue for a long time because he is going to be an animal in a few years.

If you haven’t seen the highlights, go to http://www.sportsnet.ca/video/latest/OHL-KIT–LDN

Kadri with an absolutely ridiculous move on a penalty shot. Damn this kid has some amazing hands. He has 22 points in 8 games with at least 2 points in every playoff game he has played. Next player is Taylor Hall who is SIX points behind him on a much more talented team. Boy am I happy to have this kid in our organization.

    @ Schenn:

Yeah fucking sportsnet is in love with Taylor Hall. All they show usually are Spitfire highlights and it pisses me off. Kadri doesn’t have any exposure. Well, I like it that way so that when he makes the jump to the NHL, he will surprise everyone. and yeah they mentioned one of his teammates who had 3 points while he had four. Meh, so it goes. Can’t wait to see how far he can carry this team.

    @ The Captain:

I agree with your point about trying to get better at all facets of the game but your comparison makes no sense. Crosby is his team’s first line center, of course they needed him to score more goals. There’s an obvious difference between the duties of a top center and a defenseman. The Leafs don’t need Kaberle to be a goal scorer. They need him to be solid defensively and make great passes. His defensive game is debatable but he does pass the puck with the best of them. If he thinks he’s making a better play by passing than shooting then that’s just fine.

No, fuck that, not a fucking chance. If we EVER traded Schenn unless its for a guy like Crosby or Stamkos, I say fuck that. Schenn is 20 and has 2 decent NHL seasons and a chance at being our best defencmen. Where was Ryan then? Not even in the NHL yet. Fuck that, no no no no no. Trading his is beyond stupid. Trading young guys you draft is a massive mistake and Burke isn’t stupid enough to do it. Everyone talks aboit the Kessel deal and 1st round picks, but if we just trade the guy who we had to suck for a year to get, what’s the point. Schenn stays hands down I don’t care who its for IMO…that’s it

i can’t see BB trading Schenn for anything less than a franchise type player. not that he alone would garner that return, but.. seriously though, he wasn’t trying so hard to draft Brayden because he planned on moving Luke..

besides, as has been said before, a Phaneuf/Schenn pairing is undeniably scary; i believe we might even win a few games by forfeit, when opposing teams refuse to take to the ice.
