Tuesday Prospect Report – Stalberg

We determined the listing of the prospect reports to produce every week. Seems with each new video, the prospect shines.

This week is no exception, with Viktor Stalberg already capturing Torontosaurus Rex honours. In fact, there’s a lot of love going round for the Swede lately.

It’s special this week because most have seen him already in blue and white. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this next Stalberg Prospect Report should be worth about 100,000 .. here you are folks, from the talented Bloge Salming.

I dunno, maybe its just me. But I don’t see much value in Stalberg yet. Sure he has potential but I doubt he’s in the lineup next year to be honest

    @ Jordan:

Who are we going to replace him with? A big-money 30-something free agent?

He just hasn’t done enough yet. He is the same age and situation as Bozak and look at their differences in production. Not a knock on his really, I just hope people don’t get too excited about him and then be dissapointed when he doesn’t come through. Personally I like Caputi, Sjostrom and Hanson as 3rd liners nest year. And if we want to be a playoff team next year I don’t think Stalberg will be enough on the 2nd line. He just hasn’t done enough to prove it….yet

Wow, a lot of love for Stalberg the last couple of days!!

As for Stalberg making the team, I’d rather see Caputi or even Hanson start the season with the Marlies nad Stablerg with the Leafs. A third line of Stalberg – Hanson – Sjostrom is just fine in my eyes. Although I wouldn’t mind signing a center for the third line, even if it is a veteran like Koivu and have Hanson develop in the Minor League.

IMO, Stalberg makes the Leafs next year as long as he can continue to Kulemin-ize his game, i.e. play physical, be strong on the puck, skate his ass off, etc. And on that front he seems to be getting a bit better each game or at least he’s much better than he was at the start of the season.

Franzen should be his role model.

    @ Alex Tran:
That’s the thing. He has great basic skills like skating and shooting, but he lack creativity and hockey smarts like Bozak for instance has. So when I see him I can’t help but find he reminds me of Jason Blake. Younger, and bigger but same style

I think Stahlberg has been brought along quite well. I think some of the ridiculous expectations after the preseason may skew some opinions but for a first year player he has shown a lot of promise. He has NHL size and NHL speed. His creativity and smarts will come as he gets older and more experienced. I thnk Caputi and hanson will be the ones fighting for a spot next year

Bozak is really something else and sick as fuck that we got him for free. He only played like 15 games last year and should have been nothing close to ready for the NHL this year. Next year he’s gonna be a 60-70point guy for sure

His speed is an asset that will keep him around for a while. If he becomes better at the physical part of his game and on the forecheck, he will be a really great player in the league.

Not to change the subject too much but wouldn’t you guys like to see David Clarkson on this team next year? I think he could be a very valube addition to the bottom 6 while one of Hanson, Caputi or Mitchell go back to the AHL.

    @ Jordan:
I think ur looking at Stalbergs image on paper more-so as to the output on the ice. Im by no means saying you don’t know what ur talking about, or havent been watching games, but its the rookie mistakes that make him the player you’re talking about. With time the small mistakes in his game that keep him off your leafs team next year will eventually perish to the potential this player possesses. IMO, Kulemins first games were nowhere near as impressive as Stalbergs, Stalsy regardless of his lacking skill in certain areas (hands in-tight, shot-accuracy), always finds a way to be apart of the play offensively by catching D offguard with his often talked speed. With 2 years of NHL practice this kid will be no liability. (winger is the easiest position to learn defensively, and the rest of the hand-eye issues will work itself out with the timing and use of his speed). This all being said, i speak of no all-star, but a key secondary producer for the leafs going forward. Hopefully we can turn this page back 2 years from now and say im right, because he definitely has it in him to prove me so.

    @ Ksavz:

I guess he is a RFA so that makes it almost impossible. I’m not sure what it would take to land him or sign him but I really like his game. He’s young and a Toronto boy! Could be a good match.

I hope your right and I look stupid, but after all the garbage we as fans put up with, to me until I see results I don’t get my hopes up. Like others have said I think we need to get a legit 3rd line center. Mitchell, hanson and others just don’t cut it. Clarkson would be insane or Helm. Put them there with Sjostrom and Stalberg and that’s a fast checking line. Then if Stalberg shows he’s ready he should get top 6 mins

Helm and Clarkson are both RFAs next year.

    And we have no picks.

So best bet is NJD and DET end up too tight to the cap and decide to trade them to us for whatever we can offer.
