Maple Leafs/Rangers Preview

The Toronto Maple Leafs play their second-last game of the season tonight versus the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden (7:00 pm et, TSN). The Rangers are fighting for their playoff lives, sitting 3 points back of the Bruins and 4 points back of the Flyers for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. As for the Leafs, their hopes of moving out of the basement of the East are all but gone.

Jonas Gustavsson makes his final start of the season. The Leafs’ Bill Masterton nominee has lost his last 2 starts since a 7-game win streak. Let’s hope the rookie’s up-and-down season ends with a victory.

The Maple Leafs power-play was abysmal in last night’s 2-0 loss to the Flyers, going 0-for-6. The Leafs haven’t scored on the power-play in their last 30 chances, and are 2-for-48 over their last 12 games. It has gotten so bad that Colton Orr saw time on the power-play last night. I hope that was just a one-off from Ron Wilson in an attempt to send a message to the rest of his players.

The Rangers are also coming off a loss, as they fell 5-2 to the Sabres last night. Henrik Lundqvist was pulled after allowing 3 goals on 16 shots. Look for Lundqvist to be right back in there tonight. Sean Avery is questionable with a knee injury.

New York is 2-0-1 against the Leafs this season, winning both home meetings. However, the Leafs won the last meeting on March 27 on Nikolai Kulemin‘s overtime winner. The pending restricted free agent hasn’t scored in 5 games since.

The Maple Leafs close out their season Saturday night in Montreal.

I kinda feel like you do about Kabs…not sure if he gets the return we all hope for, but to me, the Dallas thing(Kabs going to Dallas for whoever) Just makes some sense. He’s the type of player they want, he’s cheap, Joe is very convincing, and Dallas is a nice city from what I hear. It just seems to fit for me…then again, I never saw Dion coming either, or gigure so i dunno lol. I mean..Kessel is a soft sniper, Ribiero is a soft playmaker and with Neal on that wing would almost balance out that line, so I do it if I’m BB

    M9—-ANY player is moveable, depending.

To make a viable trade that brings in a highly needed Fwd to Toronto, we have to expect to give some one up of approx equal value-in this case likely a D….the rest of the cast is a fill in process

At the end of the day, BB/Nonis are sure not going to be booed out of town…they know full well what they are doing..better than we do for sure

I think BB thinks Schenn is moveable for the right dance partner/s…I also think that BB likely already knows what Kabs is likely to bring in

the only untouchables at this point are likely Bozak,Kadri, Kuli, Kessel and Gus

to get a young, proven power forward like Neal from Dallas for Ryan from Anaheim, Schenn would need to be included. You have to ask if its worth it. Wouldnt people rather keep Schenn and run with their own players and try and hope one or more develop into what they are hoping. Would anyone be overly surprised if Kulemin scored 25-30 next year? wouldnt waiting for Kulemin to develop and Stalberg, etc be preferred over moving Schenn? just throwing it out there and asking the question…

I would so hate to see Schenn moved anywhere but the top 2 on the blueline, but…our D is pretty deep and we really need a top 3 forward so BB I would think would move Schenn but the return would HAVE to be a stud top 3 forward character guy locked in for a few years at a reasonable rate, I would think..

    @ Andrew R:

I just don’t see how you think that’s true, when we just saw Kessel and Phaneuf moved without sending any of those kind of players back the other way. True, Seguin/Hall may turn out to be one of those, but he is nothing as of now. Honestly, what if we just offer sheeted Ryan?

    To BOS: Kaberle
To TOR: Wheeler, Hamill, 1st in 2011 (TOR)
(what Burke has said he’s asking for Kaberle – we know Boston’s interested)

Offer-sheet to Ryan, 5 years, 30 million dollars:

    Year 1 – 9 million
    year 2 – 8 million
    year 3 – 5 million
    year 4 – 4 million
    year 5 – 4 million

Done, and it cost us our 1st, 2nd and 3rd next year. Anaheim cannot match that front-loaded deal.

I just read what’s being reported. It’s pretty easy to make your own conclusions. Elliote Friedman reported on the self-imposed caps for both Anaheim and Dallas. Pretty legit. source if you ask me.

    @AndrewR
That’s the rub isn’t it? We need to improve the top 3 and to do that, BB would have to sacrifice the depth and/or youth on D as that is the deepest position on the team. Personally, I’d keep Schenn and super glue him to Dion for the next 10 years.

    @ Julie Sucks:

Again, you’re missing that the real value in the deal is that they are shedding Ribeiro’s salary. If they keep everyone, they have 31 million committed to just 9 forwards. Assuming that CBC is right about Hicks and the teams’s cap, that leaves 2.25 million (after all the defensemn, and Lehtonen are resigned), to find a puck moving defensemen, a backup goalie, and 3 forwards to fill out the roster. How will that team be any better than this year?

I don’t understand how Neal, who puts up 5 more points than Grabovski last year (and what he’s paced for this year) is an elite, all-world all-star (despite playing with brad richards and loui eriksson – a huge jump from what grabo has to work with), and Grabo is a worthless floater. Do we ever set ourselves up for disappointment. We think all these other teams have solid gold to offer us. When Burke does acquire solid talent, and we realize that they are actually human, we’re gonna get out the shovel and start burying them.

Some disagree with my thoughts on going after Torres,Armstrong and Lombardi then flipping Kabs, and Grabs for Backes, a prospect and pick, but I like what Backes brings with his size and willingness to hit and believe me, when Kessel rips it on net and it doesn’t go in, Backes will be there to bang in the garbage. More so, the 2011 free agent class is much stronger, and with a solid third line (Torres/Lombardi/Armstrong) already in the mix along with Backes and what he can bring, there may be some coin to spend on a big time UFA.

    @ Andrew R:

I sincerely doubt that we could not get our 1st back next year by using Kaberle in a trade to Boston. They want him, and they’ve tried to acquire him at least twice. Again, scouts say next year’s draft is pathetic. What would you rather have, a potential top 10 pick in a really weak draft year, or Kaberle? I guess the answer depends on your team make-up, but the Bruins are ready to compete now. They have about 47 picks in the first two rounds this year, so I don’t think they’ll be too concerned.

And besides, Burke just needs the threat of an offer sheet to force the trade.

Also, what you’re missing out in your analysis there, is that those pick we gave away weren’t high when we gave them away. they were a mystery. And, this year is different, because of the weak draft. Boston knew the 2010 draft was decently deep, and weren’t concerned about an offer sheet. An offer sheet by a good team would be terrifying for Anaheim.

    @ Andrew R:

And I really don’t think Burke is in as big of a hurry as you seem to think he is. He signed for what, 5 or 6 years? This is only year two. If he can add a couple solid wingers this summer, and replace Kaberle, he’s made.

    This summer:
    Kaberle = solid winger
Beauchemin + Grabovski + pick = solid winger
    -sign Paul Martin

    Next summer:
-sign Joe Thornton or offer-sheet Steven Stamkos

    Rebuild done.

I don’t know where you guys are getting any of this Schenn stuff from. The only comments about Schenn have been made by some of the most moronic hockey writers in Toronto, who basically make up stories for money. Burke said he would hesitate to trade Schenn for 10 first round picks (an exagerration, of course, but still), and all negotiations with Tavares stopped and ended with Schenn (for the record, Tavares >>>>> Neal, Ryan, etc…). Schenn is going nowhere.
