With the NHL season now officially over, the Leafs‘ players and coaching  staff spent Monday afternoon cleaning out their lockers and addressed the media for the final time. Below is a recap of important comments made. It’s generally just the usual lines about how they plan to work hard during the offseason in preparation for a big  year but there are a few interesting tidbits as well. The full audio/video can be accessed in the LeafsTV archive on the Maple Leafs’ official website. On to golf season!

Ron Wilson:

- Feels that the young players gained a lot of valuable experience from playing desperate teams fighting for their playoff lives down the stretch

- Giguere and Phaneuf provided tremendous leadership and really showed the young guys the kind of attitude and work ethic you need to win

- Was not able to go with the kids right from the beginning of the season because “you can’t just dump people”; wanted to give the veterans the benefit of the doubt and it did enable them to complete the Phaneuf trade

- Kessel needs to start working out to become stronger and fitter  in order to avoid these major/minor injuries; believes Phil will be better next season when he begins to trust his teammates more with the puck (esp. Bozak) and will work on getting open in the right spots at the right time

- Mike Komisarek is well into his rehab process and will be getting back to his conditioning program as early as July

- On how to get a better start to the season: would prefer to play fewer preseason games; was unable to start with the young kids who outperformed the veterans during training camp but does not anticipate facing this problem next season

- Challenge heading into next September will be how to balance practicing skills and exhibition game time because they will once again be facing 9 preseason games

- Phaneuf was a great influence in the locker room; providing a voice of leadership, ethusiasm and confidence during practice and games; expects him to be a focal point of the franchise for years to come

- Expects Nazem Kadri to be with the big club right from the get-go next season

Tomas Kaberle:

- Feels great mentally and physically; still considers himself to be “young” and feels he has a lot of hockey left to offer

- Feels that he could fit well into Ron Wilson’s system; would like to bring his game up to another level in order to hopefully contribute to the team next year

- Burke has always been fair to him in regards to trade negotiations; will talk to his agent about the merits of presenting a list of teams to Burke before his trade window opens up at the draft

- Attributed some of his second half struggles to being tired from playing so many games in such a short span at the Winter Olympics

- Would relish a leadership role if he is back next season

Phil Kessel:

- Does not have a preference in terms of who his linemates will be next season

- Suffered a small tear in his abdomen during the Boston game and will rest it; is unsure whether he will play for Team USA at the Worlds if asked

Jonas Gustavsson:

- Loves playing for the Leafs and loves the city; would like to re-sign with the team as soon as possible

- Had a good relationship with Toskala but felt that he could learn more from Giguere because they play the same style; learned a lot from watching him prepare in practice

Francois Beauchemin:

- Felt that 3/4 of the team, including himself, started trying to do too much when the team struggled out of the gate

- Was not pleased with his -13 rating but explains that he will never be a “plus” player because of his role as part of a defensive shutdown group against the opposing players’ top line every night

Jean-Sebastien Giguere:

- Was pleased with the team’s play down the stretch: 25 points in 20 games and that’s playoff pace

- Has a great working relationship on and off the ice with Gustavsson

- Over the last few weeks, he has been feeling like he’s 25 again: playing with a ton of energy and enthusiasm; enjoying coming to the rink everyday, something that he seemed to lose in Anaheim

- Likes Jonas’ combination of raw ability and passion; loves to compete with him in practice to see who can give up the least goals; feels that he has very good upside

Hey guys, I just had a great idea!

What if Kadri and Schenn trained with Gary Roberts this summer? I hear he’s pretty hardcore into training…

Wow, great update guys. Though why is all my text without paragraph breaks? Kind of wish you guys also had a baseball and basketball blog with the same look and passionate writers from MLHS.

I’m not sure I’m ready to through Beauchemin under the bus yet. He had a bad season, I say lets see how he adjusts next season.

I think going into a full season with Giggy and the Monster will be pretty good for our playoff chances.

Kessel scored 30 missing a month and without any training camp. I think next season he will really come along. He does need to work on his conditioning. he also needs to work on his defensive lapses when he doesn’t have the puck.

Kulimen was our best forward imo. Not the most goals, but he was very good and has the tools to be a pretty good two way forward. Get this guy signed pronto!

Gunnerson was the best defenseman on this team imo.

Schenn rebounded from a tough start, and offensively has actually improved over last season. Still has a lot to learn.

Kaberle needs to go imo. he still has a lot of hockey left, but just not here. With Phaneuf, Schenn, Gunnerson, and a few other young guys like Blacker and Aulie on the way, his services are just no longer needed. We should trade him for a 1st+ or a good top 6 forward.

It’s true that Kaberle’s no-trade clause gets lifted in the summer, but it’s Kaberle that still has the upper hand in this situation. Look at what his agent had to say:

“Whoever trades for Tomas better be damn sure it’s a team he wants to play for,” Rick Curran, Kaberle’s agent, said. “They might only have him for a year.”

Basically, if the Leafs try to ship him to any team, they won’t be getting a great return. Only way Burke maximizes the return in the deal is if Kaberle submits a list of teams that he would be willing to sign an extension with, and then Burke trades him to one of those teams.

Have any of you actually listened to the Beauchemin PC? He says his +/- wasn’t good enough, but that historically, he does not have a good +/- even when he did have a good season. He never implied he was happy with his performance. He’s just questioning the validity of measuring performance based on +/- due to the differences in role.

    @ The Captain:

Kaberle can say that all he wants, but the reality is, he is not going to shit on whoever trades for him. You spend a whole year in a new city, you make new friends, and become loyal to new teammates. Kaberle is the type of guy who resigns wherever he is traded. This is his agent trying to make sure he’s not shipped to Atlanta, Columbus, or Tampa Bay. At the end of the day though, there are some world class organizations that might not be on Kaberle’s “preferred list”.

Also, there are other things a team can do to convince Kaberle to resign. Let’s say someone wanted Kaberle, but was unsure he would resign. However, they were also looking to completely revamp their D (lots of teams in this boat). Well, trading for Kaberle, and then signing his best friend Kubina is probably a good bet. You’ve also just bought yourself a pretty damn fine powerplay.

Also, I like Beauchemin here, but I think it would be best to trade him if possible. Either way at LEAST Finger has to go and I bet he starts with the Marlies or something. Phaneuf logs wayyyyyyyyy too many mins to ve the amount of defence we have now. I bet Columbus and NYR make the biggest push for Kaberle this year, or Washington if they don’t make it far this year

It must have been so frustrating for Wilson to watch the usual losers (Stajan, Blake, Toskala, Mayers, Stempniak, Poni….) stumble out of the gate to start the season and show absolutely no leadership whatsoever to get the team turned around.

What a losing atmosphere that must have been. Addition by subtraction, those priveleged players are now gone, and there’s just a few more to go until this team is fully cleansed.

I don’t expect playoffs next season, but I fully expect to be a top 5 team in the NHL within 3 years.
