HF ranks Leafs sixth in Organization Ratings

Strengths: Prior to the start of this season, the Leafs prospect list was a list full of question marks. But it has become clear that the Leafs at the very least have some talent to work with in the coming seasons. First and foremost would be OHL star Nazem Kadri, who has come on in the second half of the season after a slow start in London. Two other forwards that appear to have a future with the Leafs are former collegians Tyler Bozak and Viktor Stalberg. Jerry D’Amigo, one of the stars for Team USA at the 2010 WJC, is another promising forward currently in the college ranks. The acquisition of Luca Caputi adds another solid forward with some size, a trait valued by Leafs’ GM Brian Burke. In goal, Jonas Gustavsson has emerged as a legitimate future starter.  Weaknesses: Where the Leafs may lack future support is along the blueline, with trade deadline acquisition Keith Aulie and Carl Gunnarsson representing the only current prospects of real magnitude at defense. But, considering where the Leafs were after last season, the future is looking brighter. Top 5 Prospects: 1. Nazem Kadri, C, 2. Jonas Gustavsson, G, 3. Tyler Bozak, C, 4. Carl Gunnarsson, D, 5. Viktor Stalberg, LW
-Hockey’s Future

Of no surprise is that signings Jonas Gustavsson and Tyler Bozak played a major role in boosting the Leafs up the rankings. That’s not to say that they don’t count the same as key young assets, but both Gus and Bozak will not qualify for this list next season after turning 24 and/or surpassing the 65 game mark of their NHL careers. To see Stalberg and Gunnarsson listed in the top five of a sixth-ranked prospect group as former sixth and seventh round picks respectively certainly represents some form of silver lining from John Ferguson Jr’s reign.

The author’s omission of the name Jesse Blacker in assessing our blueline depth weakness was curious to me. After standout performances at the rookie tournament in Kitchener in September, Blacker notched 30 points in 48 games following a trade request to the Owen Sound attack from Windsor in search of increased playing time. Granted, past Aulie and Blacker among players yet to feature in a Leaf uniform, depth certainly does thin out, and this is likely a priority for Burke with the remaining picks he has to work with come June 25.

More on the Leafs’ top ten placement here.

Mikus looks to have a pretty good future ahead of him as well. With our current D signed mostly for the next 3 years gives us some time to find replacements for them if they don’t resign here. So i’m not too worried about only having 5 good young D in Dion, Schenn, Gunnar, Blacker and Aulie.

I still remembering during the WJC a few years ago watching a story about how one of the players saved there fathers life after fell through the ice. after watching that i sat back and wished we had that kind of guy in our system and now we do can’t wait to see what Aulie can do in the Blue and White.

Even with our top 5 prospects in Gunnarson, Bozak, Stalberg, Kadri(most likely) and Gustavsson graduated, we still have depth heading into next year. We won’t be as high as this year, but I suspect top 10 or at least top 15. With strong play from Jerry Damigo, Philip Paradis, Christopher Didiomenico, Keith Aulie, Jesse Blacker, Luke Caputi etc we could see our selves higher then we may think. The stockpile is still looking very nice..

I see this as something to be very very happy about! We have the second best organizational future and prospect depth in the Eastern Conference. It sounds so much better when you say it that way!

We have a lot of prospects that are near locks to be NHL’ers in some way, shape or form. The problem is we don’t have a lot of prospects that could turn out to be super-high-end players. Most of them are bottom six guys or bottom 3 defensemen (outside of Kadri, and the top 5). I think Burke needs to land some 2nd round picks, and take a shot at batting some picks out of the park with risky guys like Kabanov, Pulkkinen and so on.
    -
I’m not concerned with the lack of defensive depth, because our NHL roster is set for a while in that regard anyways, so we definitely have a year or two to restock that cupboard. I wouldn’t mind exploring the idea of getting Blake Kessel out the possession of the NY Islanders. Perhaps we could take back Witt’s useless salary for the Marlies in exchange for his rights. With him though, we’d have Blacker, Aulie, Mikus, Gysbers and Kessel for back-end depth. Burke will probably sign an NCAA guy if he gets a chance too.

Yes, but we should all remember that Hockey Future’s is shit. How long were the Habs atop this list? How many prospects turned out? They pretty much just collect various opinions, or so it seems to me. I’m not sure how accurate a lot of these “outlook ratings” are….

And looking at the other teams, there strengths are at the back end. We have graduated players at the back end who will have better career’s then those listed in their scouting reports. Phaneuf, Schenn, Gunnarson (who is on there) look to have long successful career’s here. At forward I think we have the edge over any team in the league.

So is it too early to start musing about what will happen to San Jose this summer once they manage to lose this series without a goal from “the big 3′?
    -
It’s actually very interesting, as heatley and thornton both have NTC’s, and heatley only waived to come to SJS for the purpose of playing with thornton. do they have to be traded together? will they both refuse to waive? does that mean they HAVE to resign thornton, since heatley is signed long-term, and will be a bitch and publically request a trade if they don’t keep him? does letting marleau go really solve anything? okay, so you lost your captain of 10 years for…nothing. Wow. Could be a total breaking point for that franchise.

Nice to see the Leafs so high, and even finished one place higher than I predicted they would. Too bad they couldn’t crack the Top 5, although one could argue the Leafs have a better prospect pool than the Blue Jackets.

    @ Cameron:
Not sure if they can deal Marleau’s rights, but if they lose this series (as #1 seeds) there will be quite an overhaul. I think win/lose, they stand to lose R. Blake and E. Nabakov; Setoguchi is an RFA and so is Malholtra. Losing Marleau will be a big loss, not much to replace him with.

I dont think Marleau fits into our system, he’s one of those Cheechoo types where he ends the season with 50 g’s and you ask yourself HOW?! (just re-watch the olympics)

Leafs are OK on the blueline, but the proper development of Aulie and Blacker will go a long way…needless to say our roster holes lie within forwards. There needs to be short-term/long-term solutions.

Wow, after going to Toronto’s page on the Hockey Future website, the Leafs have a great looking future!

    Stalberg – Kadri – Hanson
    Caputi – Bozak – Hayes
    D’Amigo – Paradis – D. Mitchell
    Slaney – DiDomenico – Ryan
    Flaake – Champagne – Stefanovich

Thats not even taking into consideration Grabovski, Kulemin, Kessel and J. Mitchell who are all young and playing with the Leafs already.

Another question, how doesn’t Caputi crack the Top 20 prospect list?

I actually agree with Hockeys Furture on Blacker. He certainly has upside but there are defensive elements of his game that are lacking. I think he is at least a few seasons away.

why does everyone forget about Phil Oreskovic? hes a bit older than some of the other prospects but he was solid with the marlies this year not to mention hes a big mean defenseman who really helped the rest of the marlies feel protected out there. Hes not going to be a top 4 guy but i think were going to see him as a number 5-6 down the road and hes going to be the guy on the pk getting bodies away from the front of the net.

    b>:
    About DiDomenico.

He broke his femur last season. The femur is as hard as concrete. It takes about 1000 pounds of pressure to break it. Its a very very serious break with a very very long recovery period. Breaking your femur happens in car accidents or falling down long flights of stairs. It is NOT a common hockey injury by any means. I did some research and I could barely find anyone who had broken their femur while playing hockey other than DiDo and myself.
Personally, I broke my femur 4 and a half years ago playing hockey and my leg has not been the same since. I did not skate until about 9 months after my surgery and did not play hockey for about 15 months. That being said, I’m sure Chris D is getting the best treatment possible for his injury but I am almost 5 years post surgery and my leg still gets sore in damp weather and when I over work it. By over work it, I mean play beer league hockey 3 days a week. Considering the NHL season is 82 games and over 160 practices, I have a hard time seeing DiDomenico being able to handle it. He is good prospect and I wish the best for him but I recommend leaf fans do not automatically assume he will one day be a Leaf.
Remember, I’m not an expert on femur’s but I have broken mine and I’m just going from my experience.
Sorry to put a damper on him.

Kurtis Foster’s femur break was pretty big news. Guys back playing and enjoyed a career year in Tampa, and DiDo has youth over Foster.

    @ Richard-Steven Williams:
I do remember Foster’s break but I never knew it was 100% certain that it was the femur, A lot of news reports said “broken leg”. I do believe it was probably the femur but one thing I forgot to mention. I was fine in the first couple of seasons that I played after the break as well. Its only in the last year that I have had problems with aches and pains due to playing too much and damp weather. Any surgery with an extensive amount of hardware like a rod, plates, screws will bother a player down the road.
