Just For Fun: Starting a Franchise

Boy the playoffs have been pretty good this year huh? News is slow in Leafland nowadays so let’s talk some hockey.

On Tuesday night, I witnessed Sidney Crosby light up the Senators to the tune of a 4 point night, bringing his series totals up to 11 points in 4 games played. And that Malkin kid who also scored, ain’t too shabby either. Last night, I was privy to a a pair of lasers launched by Ovechkin which basically choked the life out of the Bell Centre. To cap off the evening, I was wowed by a 20 year old Drew Doughty, who has 6 points through his first 4 career playoff games, and thought to myself that this kid might already be the best defenseman in the NHL. So then I started thinking: If you could pluck a single player off any roster to build a franchise around who would it be?

Do you go with the second year co-winner of the Rocket Richard trophy in Steven Stamkos? Do you go with the Golden boy Sidney Crosby? Maybe one of the Russian snipers in Malkin or Ovechkin? Honestly, I’d have a helluva time turning down Doughty… the kid is a fricking monster… and defense wins championships. So there you go.

Alright, you’ve got me there, haha.
As for Byfuglien, I don’t think it’ll take much to get him as the Blackhawks are in Cap Hell right now!

Why the Vinny/Marty hard on? Why would you take one ageing and one ailing forward from a team that has been consistently crap for several seasons? I’d take someone young with potential, perhaps try an offer sheet for someone, before I started trading for soon-to-be has beens… and that comes from a St. Louis fan.

I don’t care about “realistic return” if you can’t get nothing but crap get nothing at all. Look at the Chicago RFA list, Hawks fans are pricing Hjalmarsson at 2.33 mill, I’d salary dump Kaberle if we went after Hjalmarsson.

Why? We are deeper than I can remember( Leaf fan since the Doug Favell days UGG) on the blue line. Komi, Dion, Beauch, Gunner, Schenn, Finger, Balacker, Aulie. Mikus, ETC. ETC. Why go for “D”? We need top 6 scoring…..I dont care who it is…and Kabs hasn’t been traded cause BB expects an unrealistic return, otherwise he’d be gone by now,

People say we are undervaluing Kaberle. I say the boat has sailed on shifting him or even packaging him with what the Leafs are willing to give up for a good return, subsequently his value may become higher toward the trade deadline as opposed to this summer.

It was Stajan, Hagman, White for Dion and Aulie… panic move by Sutter.. White’s numbers were better than Dion’s at the time and he got 2 second line scorers…not bad…Sutters fuck up was trading Jokinen for higgins and fuck up

    @ Pazuzu:

Best possible player and all that jazz. RFA compensation values are way up and Hjalmarsson trumps most that depth. Go for him, dump the flotsam for low picks whatever it takes to get rid of Beauchemin or (and I’m a big fan of his) Finger because the former is never going to fit into Wilson’s system the latter is never going to be accepted by the fans. Then in a few years we have Hjalmarsson, Phaneuf, Gunnarsson, Schenn and Blacker that’s a pretty hefty core.
The hawks are stuffed on the cap this is the best chance to pick up a high potential D-man and so long as he signs under 3mill we have to give up a 2nd round pick.
Our D are complimentary players who have not meshed together, Beauchemin with Niedermayer, Komisarek with Markov.
I don’t want to see the Leafs taking on veteran contracts, no position is free from improvement (except maybe in goal) etc. etc.

Have to agree to a point, are you like me and completely juiced for the off-season? Young is the way to go, I’m just of the opinion Kabs doesn’t give us that, but I’ll tell ya, I am soooo stoked for the off-season, i REALLY CAN’T WAIT!!

Depending on who’s the new Gm in Tampa, I’ll assume if Marty’s looking to leave, Vinny will be willing and not many teams and take his salary, and with decent pkg like Kabs, Grabs, Mitchell and 3rd.rnd pick for Vinny, Downie and 1st.rd pick and draft Jeff Skinner, who looks like a good 2nd/3rd line solid 2way player w/great numbers on a possible Memorial cup contending team, check TSN.ca/nhl and look at the prosp.mid.season report and he’s projected 22nd, but I think he’d be a steal at 6th and like Kadri, he’s small, and he’s only 17, more likely 2-3yrs away from AHL/NHL ready.)

Right now the NYI is going to have to replace Witt and may’be, just may’be Garth wouldn’t mind reuniting Streit and Komi, with Stefanovich and may’be we can get Bailey or Schremp, along with a 2nd.rd pick and draft Jack Campbell.

And finally, sign Scott Niedermayer and reunite him and Beau on the 2nd. pairing.

    Kadri – Lecavalier – Kessel
    Stalberg – Bozak – Kulemin
    Sjostrom – Schremp – Downie
    Orr – Hanson – DiDomenico

    Phaneuf – Schenn
    Gunnarsson – Beauchemin
    Niedermayer – Aulie

    Giguere/Gustavsson – split duty

I don’t believe Byfuglien is over-rated and him being big (and physical) is exactly what the Leafs need on forward. I think he’d be a perfect fit for the second line with Graobski and Kadri, unless of course Burke is able to bring in another Top six forward, then one of Grabo or Nazem could center the third line.
Just remember, Phaneuf was voted the most over-rated player in the NHL, does that mean he isn’t a good hockey player?

I kind of like how shit shaped Lecavlier and DiPietro’s contracts are turning out. Sure they circumvent the cap but boy do they anchor teams (and I have a real soft spot for the Islanders). I think the NHL should think twice before trying to ban the long term contracts in the next CBA, seeing how poor the Lightning and Islanders have been since penning those deals should be a warning to all.

ya know why Tampa has sucked worse than the Leafs in the last couple of years…
because their ownership was a slightly worse mess than the leafs..
anyone that would give Vinny that contract, has to be worse than JFJ,
The contract in term/annual salary are a Team Killer !
I ,for one, know that Mrs Burke never raised such a foolish child, hehe
any aquisitions will be a tad more realistic, and cap sensible,

I don’t mind Lecavalier because when he’s 35+ his contract goes to penuts and easy to buyout. BUT BURKE WONT DO IT. He won’t bring in a guy with more then 5 years left. He has said that a million times.
3 mil for Buf is just a waste of cap space really. Benn is a dream and should be because we need that.
Look at the teams who need Kaberle and either want to dump salary or make a run at the playoffs.
Dallas is one but it would be for Richards and his 7.8 mil if anyone. Kaberle + Grabovski +Prospect is realistically what it wll cost. A good prospectoo like D’amigo, Paradis or Didominico. Not crap like Hayes, or Stefanovich who have zero value to other teams.
I would personally do that trade still and it cuts them cap space Kaberle would be with Newindyke so maybe he woulkd stay longer because he knew him before. I dunno. But that’s the type of big move Burke is gonna do this year and I don’t care about the prospect because he still continues to bring them in.
Donmt give me that bullshit about “kaberle has one year left” because guess at so does Richards and at a lot more cash. Its no doubt he’s gone after next year too with all their young guys coming up.
So if we managed that, we could see something like
    Kulemin-Richards-Kessel
    Kadri-Bozak-Stalberg

Considering Montreal is going to have a hard time resigning Plekanec, I think he may make it to July 1. If he is available I think he is worthy of consideration. At 5-11 and 200 lbs he is not as big as we would like but he plays strong. This guy scored 25 times and picked up 70 pts and was plus 5. He would provide tremendous depth and compliment Kessel very well since he is a left handed centre. At 27 years old he fits in nicely with our young team.
A long term deal could cause problems down the road so I would rather see a short term deal at more money if that is possible. This deal would allow us to move Kaberle for picks and/or prospects. Maybe Kabs to Bufalo for Kassian? Would Bufalo do that?
Anyway with Plekanec in house our lineup might look like this:
    Kulemin Plecanec Kessel
    Kadri Bozak Stalberg
    Sjostrum Grabovski Hanson
    Torres Mitchell Orr

I don’t know, Plekanec is pretty inconsistent. I bet he’s one of those guys who will sign a ridiculous contract he will never live up to. Perfect for New York, or Montreal for that matter.

SJS will let Marleau walk this summer. I bet they will keep Thornton and Heatley. But will Blake be back?
    .
If they choke again they may be willing to make some big offseason changes. Like adding Kaberle, but it will cost them for Pavelski.
    .
If I were SJS I wouldn’t do it, but you never know. Desperate teams do stupid things.

    Kaberle+Grabovski
    FOR
    Clowe+rights to Marleau(if agrees to sign)+1st 2010
They were trying to dump Clowe this season and we could use him
    Marleau-Bozak-Kessel
    Clowe-Kadri-Kulemin
