In With The New… In With The Old?

Since Brian Burke has been at helm, the Toronto Maple Leafs organization has restocked its prospect cupboard and have instilled hope in a fanbase desperate to win.

Leafs fans have witnessed both highs and lows during the 2009-10 season and, although they must watch helplessly as the Boston Bruins select either one of Tyler Seguin or Taylor Hall, there is now legitimate reason to believe the Stanley Cup drought could come to an end.

When? Who knows, but Burke is taking it one step at a time—and, somehow, avoiding the traditional five-year rebuilding plan in the process.

And what, pray tell—always wanted to use that in an article, isn’t it such a sophisticated word?—will be that next step?

Well, no one but Burke can dissect his hockey mind, but here’s what I think needs to be included to a team in dire need of hockey post-April.

Veterans.

The typical Leafs cynic would refer to the old days when the franchise would include nothing but veterans come July 1. But make no mistake, it could be the difference between 15th and 8th place in a league which decides its playoff contenders by mere points—and who the hell wants to see the Bruins snag another top-five pick anyway?

Taking a glance at the Leafs’ top-six, they have the likes of Phil Kessel, Mikhail Grabovski, Tyler Bozak, Viktor Stalberg, Nikolai Kulemin and, uh, Luca Caputi? Pick a name out of the hat. It could even be Nazem Kadri, who knows?

Nevertheless, that top-six is relatively weak—to be put it nicely—when compared to other teams around the league. Yes, the Leafs are rebuilding. But if they can develop even three legitimate top-six forwards, besides Kessel, it would be considered a godsend.

What’s concerning for me is that these players are basically left to fend for themselves. There is no veteran to teach them the ropes and learn from their mistakes. They’re essentially like rich kids being thrown into the wild to learn basic survivals skills.

I’m not suggesting the Leafs should clog the top offensive lines with veterans and stagnate the development of the youth. But acquiring at least a veteran or two can have a considerable impact on a team that has displayed a fragile psyche at times.

Here are some of the free agents I think could help:

Paul Kariya, LW, 35

Coming off hip surgery, Kariya was looking to get his career back on track. He finished the season with 18 goals and 43 points in 75 games—the lowest points-per-game total of his career. The Vancouver native may be at the twilight of his career, but, at 35, can still put up a decent amount of points while serving as a veteran presence. Putting up two 100-point seasons, Kariya knows what it takes to survive as a smallish forward in the National Hockey League. He could be a good mentor for offensively minded players such as Kessel, Grabovski or Stalberg.

Ray Whitney, LW, 37

Remarkably, Whitney continues to produce points despite his age. He dropped by nearly 20 points this season but managed a respectable 21 goals and 37 assists. The jury is out as to whether he has enough gas in the tank to play as a top-six forward for another season, but you can bet he’ll be a lucrative option for teams desperate to add some offence come July 1. I’m undecided on Whitney, but I decided to put him on anyway. His play would help, but he’s not worth the big bucks should he command it.

Tomas Holmstrom, LW, 38

Although he’s getting older, Holmstrom continues to cause havoc in front of the net—something the Leafs have rarely done last season. He’s injury-prone, but has an immediate impact when in the line-up. He produced 25 goals and 45 points in 68 games this season, and is currently giving Ilya Bryzgalov hell in their series against the Phoenix Coyotes. It’s hard to imagine Holmstrom not donning the Detroit Red Wings sweater, and he probably won’t. But hey, who knows? I can dream.

Beyond that, there are a few other veteran players who could be solid additions, but it’s probably in the Leafs’ best interest to add a veteran to both the bottom-six and top-six positions.

Of course, that is only one of the Leafs’ needs this off-season if they wish to end this five-year playoff drought.

As always, interested in your thoughts on this strategy. Am I off my rocker, or am I actually sane for once?

You stay classy, MLHS.

Okay so i’m watching TSN and Dreger seems to think Anton Volchenkov will be seeking as much as 5 million. With a career high of 4 goals, Volchenkov has made a name for him self as a shut down defencmen. Volchenkov is this year’s Mike Komisarek. So who would you rather have at 4. 5 million. Komisarek or Volchenkov? Oh, and there both 28 years old.

He should end up in Washington, although LA fans seem to think he’s heading there. Hard to say between Komi and Volchenkov though, as Komi hasn’t been himself for almost two years. I’m excited to see what Komi can bring next year when finally healthy again. I hope he is just dominant.

And in regards to the article, add Matt Cullen and Saku Koivu to the list. Would love either of these two to center our 3rd line. If we can’t land a couple of top notch forwards this summer with Kaberle and our other assets, then we should focus on rebuilding the bottom six. Add a guy like Clarkson, and create a solid checking line (Kulemin – Koivu – Clarkson) that can score, and then work on making an intimidating force for the 4th line. Maybe look at signing Cooke, or picking up Eager from the Pens (Eager/Cooke – Hanson – C.Orr). Sub Sjostrom in as necessary. I love Sjostrom, but I think the value of having a quality guy like him on the outside looking in really makes the rest of the team keep their “A” game on all the time. So much different than having Wallin looking at nabbing a spot.

I wouldn’t mind bringing in the Niedermayer brothers once again.

If you’re looking for a big name veteran on a short-term deal, then perhaps an Adam Foote would be interesting (if you ship out Beauchemin for example).

Oh man, pouring over the UFA list. Mike Grier would be another great addition. Tough as nails and kills penalties like a beast.

I guess he’s good for 20 points, but I think Grier’s kind of a final addition when it’s clear you’re a playoff team. I think Buffalo will resign him also. What do people think about Matt Cooke? I believe he was employed by Burke before. Problem is, he’ll be expensive cuz he had a pretty good year with 15 goals and a plus 17. I know he’s a total jackass, but he’s also very hard to play against, and would be the pest we so lack.

In fact the premise of the article today was good but the suggestions and rationale of each of the potential UFAs was really weak. None of the UFAs available this year turn my crank since all of them will want a multi year deal and that just isnt in the cards when next years crop of UFAs can put the Leafs deep into the playoffs.

Honestly, i would be content with a first line of kulemin-bozak-kessel next year. Let our young studs develop together. Now our second line is the one that needs the most focus. We desperately need another top-tier guy, wing or center. I’d easily take kovy (free), which i think burke should go after strongly. Can you imagine our team with him? He would make grabovski look insane. Horton would be another possibility, or any other solid, youngish and already proven guy to go with stalberg, kadri, grabovski, or any other of our young guns.

Burke must take off the load of that first line, and i think results will follow up front. Your argument Ron of adding a veteran makes a lot of sense, and i’d love kariya.

I still think however, that adding a young proven stud to be vital. Kessel cannot carry this team alone. I was really high on mueller at the deadline, however got a lot of heat for it. Now im sticking with horton. Would love to get that lethal wrist shot.

On another topic, many people of saying not to waste money on kovy now, since there will be a better FA pool next year. Werent people saying that for this year, and everyone got locked up. The same will happen next year. Players of kovy stature will not come along often in FA.

i would try and grab patrick marleau myself as a veteran presence, and a guy still in his prime who makes us better on many levels.

then, i would also look to grab one more like whitney. a two-year deal for him that could be taken off our books after helping to develop some guys in his mould (like stalberg?). then, take the money we’d be paying him and put it elsewhere.

i am fine with the youth movement though. i think we really only need ONE veteran for now. we have decent veteran presence on the blueline, and in net. one at forward like marleau or whitney would be enough for now. one top-six veteran that is. we could use one more on the bottom six too, to teach those guys what their jobs are.

If I’m looking for a veteran to play on the third line, and substitute into the top six all the while still at a decent age, I’m looking at Manny Malhotra. He had 14 goals, 33 points, and was a +17 on the Sharks this year, and has done a great job killing penalties and shutting down players. The Mississauga native would be a great addition to this team, as he has played over 700 career games and has shown this year he doesn’t need to play with Rick Nash to put up points on the Sharks third line.

Speaking of the Sharks. My god, Joe Pavelski was built for the playoffs. He’s an RFA this year, and I believe Setoguchi is one as well. Combine that with Marleau and Nabokov as UFA’s and they are in a serious bide to find a way to afford these guys. Give Pavelski top line minutes and he can put up 80+ points a season. But he is better suited as a second line guy who can chip in 25 goals and 60 points. Burke calls him a “Swiss-Army Knife” and he did play with Kessel at the Olympics. I wouldn’t mind targeting him (completely irrelevant to the article about veteran presence), considering Marleau will look for $6M+, Nabokov $5M+, Setoguchi $4.5M+, and Pavelski $4M+.
