In With The New… In With The Old?

Since Brian Burke has been at helm, the Toronto Maple Leafs organization has restocked its prospect cupboard and have instilled hope in a fanbase desperate to win.

Leafs fans have witnessed both highs and lows during the 2009-10 season and, although they must watch helplessly as the Boston Bruins select either one of Tyler Seguin or Taylor Hall, there is now legitimate reason to believe the Stanley Cup drought could come to an end.

When? Who knows, but Burke is taking it one step at a time—and, somehow, avoiding the traditional five-year rebuilding plan in the process.

And what, pray tell—always wanted to use that in an article, isn’t it such a sophisticated word?—will be that next step?

Well, no one but Burke can dissect his hockey mind, but here’s what I think needs to be included to a team in dire need of hockey post-April.

Veterans.

The typical Leafs cynic would refer to the old days when the franchise would include nothing but veterans come July 1. But make no mistake, it could be the difference between 15th and 8th place in a league which decides its playoff contenders by mere points—and who the hell wants to see the Bruins snag another top-five pick anyway?

Taking a glance at the Leafs’ top-six, they have the likes of Phil Kessel, Mikhail Grabovski, Tyler Bozak, Viktor Stalberg, Nikolai Kulemin and, uh, Luca Caputi? Pick a name out of the hat. It could even be Nazem Kadri, who knows?

Nevertheless, that top-six is relatively weak—to be put it nicely—when compared to other teams around the league. Yes, the Leafs are rebuilding. But if they can develop even three legitimate top-six forwards, besides Kessel, it would be considered a godsend.

What’s concerning for me is that these players are basically left to fend for themselves. There is no veteran to teach them the ropes and learn from their mistakes. They’re essentially like rich kids being thrown into the wild to learn basic survivals skills.

I’m not suggesting the Leafs should clog the top offensive lines with veterans and stagnate the development of the youth. But acquiring at least a veteran or two can have a considerable impact on a team that has displayed a fragile psyche at times.

Here are some of the free agents I think could help:

Paul Kariya, LW, 35

Coming off hip surgery, Kariya was looking to get his career back on track. He finished the season with 18 goals and 43 points in 75 games—the lowest points-per-game total of his career. The Vancouver native may be at the twilight of his career, but, at 35, can still put up a decent amount of points while serving as a veteran presence. Putting up two 100-point seasons, Kariya knows what it takes to survive as a smallish forward in the National Hockey League. He could be a good mentor for offensively minded players such as Kessel, Grabovski or Stalberg.

Ray Whitney, LW, 37

Remarkably, Whitney continues to produce points despite his age. He dropped by nearly 20 points this season but managed a respectable 21 goals and 37 assists. The jury is out as to whether he has enough gas in the tank to play as a top-six forward for another season, but you can bet he’ll be a lucrative option for teams desperate to add some offence come July 1. I’m undecided on Whitney, but I decided to put him on anyway. His play would help, but he’s not worth the big bucks should he command it.

Tomas Holmstrom, LW, 38

Although he’s getting older, Holmstrom continues to cause havoc in front of the net—something the Leafs have rarely done last season. He’s injury-prone, but has an immediate impact when in the line-up. He produced 25 goals and 45 points in 68 games this season, and is currently giving Ilya Bryzgalov hell in their series against the Phoenix Coyotes. It’s hard to imagine Holmstrom not donning the Detroit Red Wings sweater, and he probably won’t. But hey, who knows? I can dream.

Beyond that, there are a few other veteran players who could be solid additions, but it’s probably in the Leafs’ best interest to add a veteran to both the bottom-six and top-six positions.

Of course, that is only one of the Leafs’ needs this off-season if they wish to end this five-year playoff drought.

As always, interested in your thoughts on this strategy. Am I off my rocker, or am I actually sane for once?

You stay classy, MLHS.

Another guy I would be interested in is Max Talbot. He is a good checking line centre but doesn’t get to play that role because of Staal. He has another yr left on his deal but will probably want a raise after being such an important player for them in the last couple of years. I dont think Pitt will want to lock up even more cap room in centremen so I could see him being available. He would be a great upgrade to our bottom 6 and could potentially reunite with his buddy Colby Armstrong. That is 2/3 of a pretty good checking line.

matthew lombardi would be nice, but i bet that phoenix gets him locked up. plus, even if he makes it, he’ll be expensive, and want term. probably 3 years at 3.5 million. might be a little rich for what we are looking for. the advantage of signing older guys is that you can sign them short term and trade them for a return at the deadline. it’s even better if you can get them cheap.

i honestly believe that kovy did not accept that deal in atlanta because he did not want to play their anymore. He was probably tired of playing in a franchise where your never certain if the franchise is going to be moved and seeing top players like hossa traded for like nothing

The Leafs need a few big bodies in that top 6. We are too small up front and got knocked around too much. We don’t need small washed up vets. Need a few big guys who can actually play. One of them being a big center would be nice.

    @ Jordan:
Bet ya a dozen wings that Marleau does not sign in TO. He HATES Wilson. Dreggs jokes about it every so often during Leafs lunch. They get a caller who mentions Marleau’s name and he says don’t hold your breath on that one. I really believe there is a legit hate going on there.

i love the idea of signing malhotra. i think clowe would be great too, if there’s any way we could get him through a trade.

i actually think holmstrom on the leafs could be good. his age and injury history make me hesitant but he definitely fills a need for this forward corps.

This talk just gets me excited for what Burkie will do and the season to come in 2010/2011. burke all but assured listeners on the fan a few times that he will be signing a couple forwards via Free agency. This is guarenteed to be 1 top 6 vet and a guy for the bottom six. Matt cooke or Colby Armstrong would fit perfect down there. Then the X-factor is the player (forward) in the Kaberle trade…. very exciting, we dont’ pick in the draft but we should all be on our toes for something to happen. So if it goes down this way it will be 3 forwards joining the roster (2 somewhat vet guys/ 1 young in the Kabs trade) plus Kadri = for 4 new guys up front… can’t wait.
anyone here believe the stories about Grabovski being shipped out for picks or possibly part of a bigger deal??

    @ LeafsRyan.:
    -
Right, is that why the team mobbed him when he scored in one of the closing games of the season? They looked pretty happy for him. There was definitely some team bonding going on.
    -
It looks to me like he’s actually starting to get along with everyone now that Blake’s gone, and you know, he can speak English. Players fight at practice every day. Phaneuf was snorting rails in Calgary all the time, but I don’t hear anyone complaining that he’s “a cancer to the room”.
    -
I know you don’t like him because he’s a Belarussian, but the fact is, he is statistically better than a lot of the guys you would have him replaced with – even the amazing James Neal. Oh, and completely disregard the fact that he made the team enormously better once he finally returned and made Stalberg and Caputi legitimate scoring threats. But you’re right, who would want a guy who has the ability to make 2 rookies legitimate scoring threats? That’s absurd! Let’s trade him for a 3rd so that in 4 years we can trade that player for nothing too!
    -
Wow, thank God the fans don’t run the team. Anaheim actually makes a lot of sense as a team interested in Grabovski since they have a ton of wingers and no centers whatsoever. Another option would be Dallas if they decide to jettison one of their top two centers as rumored. Atlanta could use him. Los Angeles would look at him after Frolov walks. New Jersey and New York (both teams) are always looking for center depth and are pretty weak in that regard. The Rangers finisehd the season with Erik Christensen as their top center, but why would they want Grabovski? Phoenix could use him, depending on who they lose this off-season (ie. Lombardi). Washington could take a look at him as Laich and Fleischmann are better wingers. There would be decent interest in Grabovski for sure. It’s too bad he’s Russian or bet people would like him. Oh well.

Did Burke actually say he would sign forwards in free agency? I think he just said he would bolster the team in free agency. Since there is a decent crop of defensemen available, and hardly any forwards, it might make more sense for him to trade Kaberle and Beauchemin for the forwards we need, and sign a defensemen or two in free agency. I don’t like the idea of massively overpaying for any of the guys available this year as forwards. If they want to sign here, great, but at Burke’s price.

I was thinking about the idea of adding Holmstrom in the Off season and personaly would love to see it happen.Even though he is aging he would add a good veteran presence to our line up and would teach the kids how to play in front of the net, not to mention give us a net prensence we need really badly.
    .

I think we need to add some veterans to the lineup but at the right price.I don’t want to overpay for them.Like I’d love to sign Kariya to add a veteran presence and Leadership for the kids but I wouldn’t sign him for 6 million a season.

I’m thiking all the Leafs need to do is bring in a Top Six forward and a bottom Six forward in the offseason.

    ???? – Bozak – Kessel
    Kulemin – Grabovski – Kadri
    Stalberg – ???? – Hanson
    Sjostrom – Mitchell – Orr

A friend of mine asked me the other day if I’d trade Kessel to the Flames for Iginla, what is everybodies thoughts on that trade proposal?

Thats what I told him, not to mention the fact that Kessel is 22, while Iginla is 32. While 32 isn’t old, if you take into consideration the Leafs are probably about 5 years away from being a contender, that means Iginla will be 37 years old and won’t be a big part of the offence.

However, he brought up the point that Kessel doesn’t play with the same intensity and heart that Iginla does. Phil doesn’t hit or fight, while Jarome does plenty of that.

I think on paper that looks like a good improvement (top six and bottom six additions), but what it doesn’t take into account is that every other team will look to improve this off-season too. You need to take strides to improve, not just address one area of weakness. Also, I don’t think we’re 5 years away from contending. I think we’re two years from the playoffs, and then, anything goes.
    -
Does anyone think that Dustin Brown could be made available this summer. A lot of people seem pretty sure that Kovalchuk will land in LA, and if that’s true, the Kings might look to move Brown, who’s kind of being buried in depth right now. Handzus has really stepped up this year, and it’s clear that Kopitar and Kovalchuk would be the offensive leaders. Then you have SImmonds, Schenn and Moller who are all basically in Brown’s mould and coming along very nicely. Would something like Beauchemin, Paradis, and a 2nd be enough to bring them to the table?

    @ Cameron:

In an ideal world, Burke woudl be able to acquire a Top Six through trade and add a Top Six and Bottom Six through Free Agency, but I’d be content if he were to bring in one of each or even just two Top Six players.

As for Dustin Brown, I can’t really see them trading away their Captain, but stranger things have happened!

That’s precisely why he might be traded though, if you ask me. He’s not really their leader any more. Doughty has emerged as the man who runs the show there, and Kopitar is the offensive force, while it’s Simmonds and Handzus providing all the heart. Then they Smyth doing his net crashing and being the veteran leader, and Schenn and Moller on their way. If they added Kovalchuk to that, I could see Brown being an option. They’ve never been hesitant with trades in the past, and as we saw in these playoffs, they really lacked a Beauchemin like presence to calm things down back there.
    -
Brown would be an ideal forward to put next to Kadri, and such a trade would open up Kaberle to be dealt for a puck-distributing center for Kessel.
