In With The New… In With The Old?

Since Brian Burke has been at helm, the Toronto Maple Leafs organization has restocked its prospect cupboard and have instilled hope in a fanbase desperate to win.

Leafs fans have witnessed both highs and lows during the 2009-10 season and, although they must watch helplessly as the Boston Bruins select either one of Tyler Seguin or Taylor Hall, there is now legitimate reason to believe the Stanley Cup drought could come to an end.

When? Who knows, but Burke is taking it one step at a time—and, somehow, avoiding the traditional five-year rebuilding plan in the process.

And what, pray tell—always wanted to use that in an article, isn’t it such a sophisticated word?—will be that next step?

Well, no one but Burke can dissect his hockey mind, but here’s what I think needs to be included to a team in dire need of hockey post-April.

Veterans.

The typical Leafs cynic would refer to the old days when the franchise would include nothing but veterans come July 1. But make no mistake, it could be the difference between 15th and 8th place in a league which decides its playoff contenders by mere points—and who the hell wants to see the Bruins snag another top-five pick anyway?

Taking a glance at the Leafs’ top-six, they have the likes of Phil Kessel, Mikhail Grabovski, Tyler Bozak, Viktor Stalberg, Nikolai Kulemin and, uh, Luca Caputi? Pick a name out of the hat. It could even be Nazem Kadri, who knows?

Nevertheless, that top-six is relatively weak—to be put it nicely—when compared to other teams around the league. Yes, the Leafs are rebuilding. But if they can develop even three legitimate top-six forwards, besides Kessel, it would be considered a godsend.

What’s concerning for me is that these players are basically left to fend for themselves. There is no veteran to teach them the ropes and learn from their mistakes. They’re essentially like rich kids being thrown into the wild to learn basic survivals skills.

I’m not suggesting the Leafs should clog the top offensive lines with veterans and stagnate the development of the youth. But acquiring at least a veteran or two can have a considerable impact on a team that has displayed a fragile psyche at times.

Here are some of the free agents I think could help:

Paul Kariya, LW, 35

Coming off hip surgery, Kariya was looking to get his career back on track. He finished the season with 18 goals and 43 points in 75 games—the lowest points-per-game total of his career. The Vancouver native may be at the twilight of his career, but, at 35, can still put up a decent amount of points while serving as a veteran presence. Putting up two 100-point seasons, Kariya knows what it takes to survive as a smallish forward in the National Hockey League. He could be a good mentor for offensively minded players such as Kessel, Grabovski or Stalberg.

Ray Whitney, LW, 37

Remarkably, Whitney continues to produce points despite his age. He dropped by nearly 20 points this season but managed a respectable 21 goals and 37 assists. The jury is out as to whether he has enough gas in the tank to play as a top-six forward for another season, but you can bet he’ll be a lucrative option for teams desperate to add some offence come July 1. I’m undecided on Whitney, but I decided to put him on anyway. His play would help, but he’s not worth the big bucks should he command it.

Tomas Holmstrom, LW, 38

Although he’s getting older, Holmstrom continues to cause havoc in front of the net—something the Leafs have rarely done last season. He’s injury-prone, but has an immediate impact when in the line-up. He produced 25 goals and 45 points in 68 games this season, and is currently giving Ilya Bryzgalov hell in their series against the Phoenix Coyotes. It’s hard to imagine Holmstrom not donning the Detroit Red Wings sweater, and he probably won’t. But hey, who knows? I can dream.

Beyond that, there are a few other veteran players who could be solid additions, but it’s probably in the Leafs’ best interest to add a veteran to both the bottom-six and top-six positions.

Of course, that is only one of the Leafs’ needs this off-season if they wish to end this five-year playoff drought.

As always, interested in your thoughts on this strategy. Am I off my rocker, or am I actually sane for once?

You stay classy, MLHS.

playoffs will be a lock in 2011/2012 and for years to come after that and beyond.. but I really think if Burke can add the right peices and things go our way next year we will be battling for 7-8th in the East

well one forward is coming in via the Kabs trade.. whether nhl ready or a prospect….. hard to say, this will determine what Burkie does on July/1st .. maybe he’ll only sign one forward.. but I’m betting on 2…

    and I hope Montreal loses tomorrow… :)

I’d be all for bringing in Dustin Brown and even think Burke might target him seeing as he is American and was a big part of Team USA’s success at the Olypmics.
    .
However, if Beauchemin is dealt for him and Kaberle is traded for a center (although I’d prefer a winger, seeing as we already have Bozak, Kadri and Grabovski up the middle), who would you bring on to replace those two huge parts of the Leafs defesne?
The trades would would leave the Leafs with:
    Phaneuf – Schenn
    Gunnarsson – Komisarek
    ???? – Finger

If the Leafs were able to bring in Brown for Beauchemin, I’d like to hold onto Kaberle and sign a Kariya for the third line. Also, since Chicago is in so much cap trouble, I’d try to bring in Byfuglien and I think he coud be had for Sjostrom, as it’d save them a couple million next year.
    .
    Kulemin – Bozak – Kessel
    Stalberg – Kadri – Brown
    Byfuglien – Grabovski – Kariya
    Mitchell – Hanson – Orr
    .
    Phaneuf – Schenn
    Kaberle – Komisarek
    Gunnarsson – Finger

    @ Schenn:
    -
What do you think of this:
    -
To DAL: Kaberle, Grabovski, Stefanovich, 4th in 2011 (PHX)
    To TOR: Richards, Daley
    -
Massive salary dump for the Stars (save about 3 million). Granted, Grabovski is a downgrade on Richards, but look at what they traded for Richards in the first place (nothing). They get the spare cash to resign Neal, which everyone is so insistent they will do. Of course, this would depend on Richards not wanting to talk contract this summer. The Stars could not afford to trade him half way through the season for a rental-like return.
    -
To LAK: Beauchemin, Paradis, 2nd in 2011
    To TOR: Brown
    -
To NJD: Hayes, 5th in 2010 (NJD)
    To TOR: Clarkson (rights)
    -
-sign Paul Kariya, 1 year, 2.5 million
    -
    The team:
    -
    Kulemin – Richards – Kessel
    P.Kariya – Kadri – D.Brown
    Stalberg – Bozak – Clarkson
    Sjostrom – Hanson – C.Orr
    -
    Phaneuf – Schenn
    Komisarek – Daley
    Gunnarsson – __UFA___
    -
    Gustavsson – Giguere
    -
Maybe you go shopping for a guy like Shane O’Brien to fill that last spot. He has a history with Burke. That’s a formidable top 4 though, and Gunnarsson is no slouch. Our top 9 forwards would basically be set for years, with Kulemin being replaced periodically. Once we have assets again, we’d look to land a puck-mover for the back-end (or just sign Kaberle next summer, ha).

A name I’m not hearing that much but I think will be a guy that Burke looks at is Eric Belanger. He would be the perfect third-line center for this team.

    Regular Season 77 Gp 15 G 26 A 41 Pts +2 32 Pim 56.4% FO
    Playoffs 5 Gp 0 G 1 A 1 Pt = 2 Pim 68.8% FO

Yes he’s not huge and he is 32 but he play’s a steady defensive game and is very good at faceoff’s. Also put’s up decent offensive number’s and can fill in on the 2nd line if need be.

I believe Burke will be looking for 2 to 3 forwards this off-season to add to the club. Marleau and Kovalchuk will not be pursued at all and I for one couldn’t be happier about that fact. Neither of them are big game players but they will demand big game money. With Kovalchuk looking to be the highest paid in the league.

I am excited to see what Burke has up his sleeve for this off-season.

Unless LA wants to make Doughty the captain and make room for Kovalchuk. I would be very happy with Brown on my team, perhaps make the deal between the two team even bigger so we could get J. Johnson as well??

I would see them letting other forwards like Frolov and Modin walk before letting Brown go. A guy that will score 25+ goals/year and plays as hard as Brown does is a hard thing to replace. I would love if Burke was able to steal Brown from them but they would have to be high to let a player like that go.

    I heard the rumor
    Tor- Jordan Staal
    Pitt- Kaberle, 2nd Rd 2011
It makes sense. Pittsburgh cannot afford to keep Gonchar after giving Letang a raise, Goligoski will need one as well in a few years. Staal is stuck as a third line checking centre because he plays behind Malkin and Crosby. The role of a checking centre can be easily filled (Malhotra?), knowing the replacement won’t have Staal’s offensive upside for 40-60 pts a year. That makes Staal tradeable, and by moving him for Kaberle they fill the role of PP specialist and puck moving defensman they will be losing in Gonchar. The Pens have 10 mil to sign 1 forward and least 3 defensemen for next season according to http://www.capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=26.

Johnson is awful man. He’s seriously worse than Stralman in almost every facet of his game, but people continually come up with comments like this about him. I wouldn’t want him exchanged with any one of our top six defensemen (Kaberle, Phaneuf, Komisarek, Beauchemin, Gunnarsson. Schenn), unless it was purely for cap implications. Of course, he plays for another team and was drafted high, so he must be the greatest defensemen ever and better than our entire team. Man, watch the guy play, he is totally awful.
    -
Brown is probably a long shot, but like I said, they have a lot of depth in their forward group, especially if they sign Kovalchuk. Leaf fans will remember that Brown had a huge game against the Leafs this season, and of course operate under the assumption that he is Godly and untouchable without knowing anything about the team. Brown has really faded into the background this season, despite his solid numbers. Signing Kovalchuk, and adding Brayden Schenn and Oscar Moller to the team would make his “captaincy” an even bigger joke.
    -
If you follow the Kings at all, you’d know that Lombardi considers Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds to be untouchable, and Moller should very shortly be a 20 goal, 50 point man. Where does that leave Dustin Brown? I don’t think he’s as immoveable as you think. One way to change the leader of your team is just to trade him, and Dustin Brown very clearly is not the leader there anymore.

    RYAN JOHNSON AND DARREN HELM!
These two plus a healthy Komi, another year of growth from Schenn, full year of Phaneuf and bounce back from Beauch, plus decent goaltending for the first time in 5 years and we are back in the playoffs! Our PK jumps to top ten in the league.

I think this is a year to insure that we get some growth from the kids….save the FA signings for next year when we know more of what we’re dealing with. All the names that get bandied about are great but not realistic. 8th place should be our goal and give the Caps the same go as the Habs are giving them this year. I will be happy with that progress.

Then make some moves when Giguerre is off the books.

I really like that saku koivu idea him playing on the third line with say caputi and kulemin could be a real effective one. I like ray whitney too hes old but if we were able to sport a second line of stalberg-bozak-whitney i think that could be a very productive line. I think we really need to take a stab at marleau or staal in the long run though. Im cheering for pitsburgh to win the cup this year because if they do i believe gonchar could potentially call it a career and then it makes kaberle for staal that much more plausable. One other guy i would love to have on the team is raffi torres! fills that veteran void and i think a torres-hanson-orr would be the best forth line any team could boast next year and immediatly give wilson a four line team. One other thing is another dman because im really hoping we can trade kaberle for a 1st and prospect then a dman spot opens up and we sign anton volchekov. My roster would look something like this:

    kadri-marleau-kessel
    whitney-bozak-stalberg
    kulemin-mitchel-caputi
    torres-hanson-orr

    DMAN

    phaneuf-Beauchemin
    volchekov-komiserek
    Schenn-gunnerson

kaberle + grabovski for a 1st and prospect.

no thanks on either of these guys from my perspective… Koivu is a life-long Hab at heart – don’t want him in a Leaf uniform – and I suspect both would be over priced.

I’d prefer to target Matt Cullen (who played quite well for Ottawa not only in the playoffs but down the stretch, who can fill in a limited top-6 role occassionally, shouldn’t be that expensive and has a little less mileage on him than either Kariya or Koivu – and bluntly stated … I don’t know how much leadership those two really would bring. Koivu really never seemed to have the team behind him fully in Montreal, and Kariya seems to carry a little of the entitlement baggage rumored to be associated with Kessel periodically. Neither Kariya nor Koivu bring size… how’s about Todd Bertuzzi riding shot-gun for Bozak and Kessel?

When Kaberle and Finger are safely out of the way… one guy the Leafs should perhaps consider is Kurtis Foster of the Lightning. He’s a big guy, with a great shot and shouldn’t come with too much of price tag. Lightning won’t be able to offer him much of raise.

CAP issues will make life difficult in Washington, Chicago and San Jose. Obviously, helping those teams with their respective CAP issues might yield some talent… while I would like Patrick Sharp I’d suspect Chicago won’t let him go due to his versatility – but Boland & Ladd would be interesting in my opinion. SImilarly, Eric Fehr represents a very good shooter – when looking at this stats versus his minutes played.

For the bottom six Burish and Eager represent relatively inexpensive young options that could be had without giving anything up.
