Burke Lands Goalie Ben Scrivens

The Leafs continued their offseason stockpiling of goaltenders today, announcing that they have signed College free agent Ben Scrivens to a one year contract.

Scrivens compiled an impressive 21-9-4 record with Cornell last year, with a .934 save percentage.  He was also a top ten Hobey Baker finalist.

According to TSN, It is expected that Scrivens will challenge for playing time on the Toronto Marlies.

More after the jump.

From Garret Bauman:
Great move. There is no such thing as having enough goaltending. Philadelphia this past season is proof enough of that.
.
For those worried about where these guys will play, you have to remember four things:
.
(1) None of the prospects (Scrivens, Rynnas, Reimer, Engelege) have been deemed NHL-ready. Reimer and Rynnas are closest of the four. The development time will serve them well.
.
(2) Giguere is only under contract for one more season. In 2011-12, the plan will presumably be for one of Scrivens, Rynnas and Reimer to challenge for a spot in the NHL alongside Gustavsson (Engelege likely projects to be a career minor-leaguer, but I am hoping he surprises). Competition brings out the best in players, so keep an eye on who emerges next season.
.
(3) The Leafs are covered in the event of either a poor training camp by somebody, or more likely, any sort of injury situation that affects their goaltending corps.
.
(4) The Leafs have moveable assets now as well. Given the new signings, a guy like Reimer may become a desireable asset for teams looking for youthful goaltending depth toward the trade deadline or prior (will be RFA at the end of the 2010-11 season).
.
If anything, this signing speaks volumes of the importance of having a good coaching staff, as Rynnas and Scrivens both turned down teams with less depth to have a chance to further develop their games via Allaire’s guidance.

Alex Tran adds:

If Reimer, Rynnas and Scrivens all show they can play at the AHL level, I wonder if Burke will loan one of them out to another AHL club.

Yea I don’t think Halak can keep this up much longer. They may have gotten past Ovie, but they won’t get past Crosby.

I think I am going to be sick. I really need to kill Pierre Maguire. Ovechkin’s goal should have counted. Mike Green=most overrated player in the NHL

    @Hine
What if they went the BB way of things and went top 6 bottom 6? Kovy, OV, Backstrom, Semin, Knuble, Laich as a top six YIKES!! Plus they have a pretty good yound euro center in the system as well. They could tweakm the bottom 6 and make room I would think and they have some D-men who could be easily replaced ala poti for cheaper…God forbid!!

    @ Pazuzu:
    -
    Ovechkin (9.5) – Backstrom (7.5) – Knuble (2.8)
    Kovalchuk (8.0) – Laich (2.05) – Semin (6.0)
    Chimera (1.875) – __________ – ___________
    D.Steckel (1.1.) – C.Bourque (0.5) – Bradley (1.0)
    -
    Green (5.25) – Poti (3.5)
    Carlson (0.85) – Erskine (1.25)
    Alzner (1.675) – Sloan (0.7)
    -
    Varlamov (0.822)
    -
Caps would have about 5 million dollars to fill out their roster, so presumably, they could only resign one of Schultz, Fehr and Fleischmann. The other two would have to be traded for picks/prospects. Or they could move Semin, and resign all of them. So yea, it’s possible to sign Kovalchuk.

IMO the ref made the right call on the knuble “goal” His skate did come in contact with Halak’s skate and as a result he couldn’t make thes save. Plus it was in quick motion so cut the ref some slack, it looks like the ref made the right call anyways. There is no way Kovalchuk signs with the Capitals lol That’s almost like saying the whole Sharks line of Marleau, Heatley and Thorton will be traded to the leafs to be coached by Ron Wilson :P

it has nothing to do with whether or not it was the right call though. the fact is, they never make that call. 1 in 20 times is that call made, and i’ve never seen it benefit any team i’m a fan of. if the call is so infrequently used, how in the hell do the refs figure that game 7 is the time to pull it out of their magic bag of tricks?

    @Cameron
If they sign Kovy, and tweak the botoom six,(trade for picks/defensive pluggers, like Dom Moore type cheapo’s they got some skill in the minors as well) and try to lose some cap space on the 5-7 back end and replace it with some stay at home toughness(Frogren anybody?) we might see the second coming of the 80′s Oilers!!!

Or Luongo depending on who you listen too. lol But I never got Mike Green and I have been watching him since he was with the Blades. Always good offensively and lost defensively. I truly believe that if Mike Green can do this well with the Capitals Stephen Elliot(who now play’s for the Blades) would score 40 and get 100 point’s. He is a much better d-man at this age. And we missed him by 1 pick :(

Well, they COULD sign him but they would be bleeding players for the next couple years. Alzner and Varlamov are RFA’s next year and Carlson the year after.

Many people will blame OVI just because he’s the best player in the NHL, but I think this game really illustrates the importance of secondary scoring. Semin and Green didn’t show up at all, neither did Fleischmann…I can’t wait to hear some of you guys talk about how guys like Ovechkin don’t show up and are not “playoff performers”, Europeans aren’t the way to go etc…Don’t kid yourself, Ovechkin came to play tonight.

I hate when guys say the refs are great…it’s BS. They’ve made some really bad calls so far(Caps should’ve had 5on3 with a slash+too many men), an interference penalty in a game where a player coming down the right wing with the puck chips it past the defender not even 3 feet away and then the defender takes him out on the boards and gets called for interference, the Holmstrom penalty last night when IMHO both should of been penalized, yet Holmstrom is let off the hook…f’n BS calls that upset the game balance. And what about the dive they called NOT on Lapierre but on the other Habs player…BS call….This is an area of deep concern for me as a hockey fan. If they are gonna call a dive Loungo should of been called for at least two ives by my recolection.
