Burke Lands Goalie Ben Scrivens

The Leafs continued their offseason stockpiling of goaltenders today, announcing that they have signed College free agent Ben Scrivens to a one year contract.

Scrivens compiled an impressive 21-9-4 record with Cornell last year, with a .934 save percentage.  He was also a top ten Hobey Baker finalist.

According to TSN, It is expected that Scrivens will challenge for playing time on the Toronto Marlies.

More after the jump.

From Garret Bauman:
Great move. There is no such thing as having enough goaltending. Philadelphia this past season is proof enough of that.
.
For those worried about where these guys will play, you have to remember four things:
.
(1) None of the prospects (Scrivens, Rynnas, Reimer, Engelege) have been deemed NHL-ready. Reimer and Rynnas are closest of the four. The development time will serve them well.
.
(2) Giguere is only under contract for one more season. In 2011-12, the plan will presumably be for one of Scrivens, Rynnas and Reimer to challenge for a spot in the NHL alongside Gustavsson (Engelege likely projects to be a career minor-leaguer, but I am hoping he surprises). Competition brings out the best in players, so keep an eye on who emerges next season.
.
(3) The Leafs are covered in the event of either a poor training camp by somebody, or more likely, any sort of injury situation that affects their goaltending corps.
.
(4) The Leafs have moveable assets now as well. Given the new signings, a guy like Reimer may become a desireable asset for teams looking for youthful goaltending depth toward the trade deadline or prior (will be RFA at the end of the 2010-11 season).
.
If anything, this signing speaks volumes of the importance of having a good coaching staff, as Rynnas and Scrivens both turned down teams with less depth to have a chance to further develop their games via Allaire’s guidance.

Alex Tran adds:

If Reimer, Rynnas and Scrivens all show they can play at the AHL level, I wonder if Burke will loan one of them out to another AHL club.

Kovi to the Caps??? Don’t you think the Caps have enough Russians that disappear in the playoffs, Never compare OV to Crosby again, Crosby makes his whole team better, In the last two games I watched OV, and Semin try the one man show and look where it got them. Is it just me or is this the most brutal reffing in Playoff history, honorable mention to Kerry Frazer. During the season a D-man could not touch anyone with their stick, (ask Komaserik) then in the playoffs tackling is once again legal, and the goalie interference call, well that was poor to say the least. And to make this series even worse, La Diver from Montreal, (twice in one game) and McGuire says it “sparked Him” Years ago someone on his own bench would have Sparked him alright…Boudreau matching lines with 8 min left in his season should also be looked at by the GM, this guy gets coach of the year for what? Letting his boys run and gun all year, then losing a Coaching Battle to Jacques Martin of all people (Mr. 0 for the Playoffs) Enough said, good signing Burkie, all we need to do is make the playoffs and have a goalie, look who is left Boucher, Luongo, Fluery, Howard, Neimi, and Halak…wtf, remember the good ones !

If I’m Burke and there’s ANY truth to that rumor about Semin I’d go hard after it now…give them some cheaper options to work with and work into there team while providing us another key piece to getting back to the promised land and conversely a shot at the grail.

Semin could be huge for us…and I think he’d love the Toronto stage. The key are his salary demands…

It’s times like these when you can tell a real Leaf fan from a pretend one.
My “leaf” buddies were high fiving with the hab fans after the game. I told them to leave their blue and white at the door on their way out.

It’s true. I’m not advocating it. He was just asking if it was possible, and it is. Alzner isn’t likely to get much of a raise though – in fact, he’s likely to make less than his bonus-structured 1.675 cap hit. He hasn’t even made the team yet in an extremely weak defense. Another example of a guy people used to say “I’d trade Kaberle for him straight up!”.
    -
They need to trade Semin, and sign Volchenkov. Right there, the team is instantly improved.

Caps are gonna be in a bit of trouble.

They’ve got $20M in cap space but only have 13 players under contract.

Backstrom ($6M at least), Fehr ($2.5M?), Fleischmann ($3.0M?) and they’ve only got $8.5M left.

If the Leafs want to poach a quality young player off WSH, they should try to offer up a couple prospects in exchange for Eric Fehr.

Potential 30/30 power forward right there.

Look, I played goal for 21 years…I mean if your gonna call an interference penalty on a player who goes into a goalie UNINTENTIONALLY, or PUSHED in, then ya got to let the defender block the attacker at some point in time. Holmstrom got his big fat ass in Bryz’s face , has a little tussle with Aucoin(I think) they both go down and DET get the man advantage,… BS. What ever happened to fighting for your ice? Especially in front of the net? Instead of this ridiculous “goailie can’t play the puck zone”, they should create the complete opposite in FRONT of the net where guys can push, shove and battle. IN FRONT OF THE NET. Why the fuck can’t a guy like Turco or Marty play the puck? You wanna play the puck goalie, go get one if not deal with it!! The front of the net is a place where battles should be won and lost on size, skill, and brute determination. If the goalie is outside the blue…he’s fair game. Turco wants to get pretty and feed a stretch pass, he better be aware that he will get hit (not from behind but a clean hit) Don’t need no f’n trapazoid!! The threat of bodily harm is enough. By the way, get rid of the instigator penalty. Players have to start policing themselves. Cheap shots get suspensions, run from behind the same . but at least let a guy make an offender feel the jack when he gets outta line!! As for goalies, if you can take an 85 MPH shot off the arm you should be able to take more than a little slash with a composite….time for the NHL and NHLPA to get real!!

Man, you and I do not see eye to eye tonight. How do you figure Fehr is a 30/30 powerforward? He’s 26 this year, and just had his best season. He’s yet to crack 40 points. It’s a long shot to think he could explode like an Alex Burrows. He doesn’t have the same intensity, and one could argue that a lot of his success comes from the team he plays for.

Looking at the Leafs Cap situation on capgeek.com and I think there is enough space for Burke to bring in a couple decent players.
    .
Right now it lists the Leafs as having 17 players signed with about $10.0 million in Cap Space.
However, they have Irwin and Caputi listed for a combined $1.7 million on forward and I don’t believe they’ll be on the team next year. So, replace their 2 contracts with Kadri’s and we now have 16 players signed.
Next, I’d take off Kaberle’s $4.25 million, assuming he is traded, bringing the cap space up to $14.25 million.
Resign Kulemin at $2.25 million, bring back Hanson and Mitchell at $1.0 million a piece and that leaves the Leafs with $10.0 million left for 2 forwards.
    .
Lets say the Kaberle trade brings in a Top Six forward making $5.0 million, that would leave Burke $5.0 million to sign an UFA.
To make even more cap room, Finger’s $3.5 million could be sent to the Marlies and replaced with a 6th defenseman making about a million, giving Burke $7.5 million to spend on a Free Agent.

You need to calm down bro. I never said I agree with ALL the calls. All in all, with every penalty called by a ref, there will always be those who agree and disagree with the call. It’s just a part of the game.

And for those who would like Burke to replace Kabs with Martin, give it some time, Burke is our gm, it’s possible lol
