    @ Cameron:

You know with 100% certainty that they won’t match? You don’t know that, nor does anyone else. Buffalo did the unexpected back then – and they had serious ownership issues and they were in a worse predicament financially back then than the Ducks are currently in. It’s about principle, too. And besides, realistically how many offer sheets for top RFA’s have you seen recently excluding Edmonton’s ill-fated attempts? None of any note, nor will there be. The Ducks still hold all the cards (they can negotiate, match an offer sheet, or walk way), but they lose big time if they trade for Semin, pure and simple. There is zero chance of Semin re-signing for the same or less than what he is getting now, which means they have to give him a significant raise to keep him from testing the UFA waters. Wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of Semin signing that contract just to get him to UFA?

Not only that, he wouldn’t be able to get anywhere near what Kovalchuk got in trade value, which was nowhere near what any same person would consider equal value for Kovalchuk. No one is going to give anywhere near equal trade value for a UFA on an expiring contract – especially after seeing the Kovalchuk debacle in NJ this year. So, the Ducks are going to get less than market value on return, and pay more for that privilege. How exactly do the Ducks benefit from that again?

GMs overpay at the deadline every year, give me a break. And the lack of offersheets is a direct correlation with the strength of the most recent drafts. This year though, the picks are as close to worthless longshots as they’re going to get. The scouts have it pegged as the weakest draft in a decade.
    -
You do realize there is risk involved in every trade right? Rarely are trades made where they appear fair instantly, and there is almost always a winner and a loser. If Bergfors becomes a 30 goal man, and Cormier becomes a premier checking center, then they already have a top 4 d-man in Oduya, they got a whole damn team for Kovalchuk, and that doesn’t even include the 1st round pick.
    -
Also, just take a look at Bob Murray’s track record. Look how many players he’s traded in less than two seasons. Pronger, Moen, Pahlsson, Niedermayer, Nokelainen, Giguere, Toskala, O’Brien, Whitney, Kuntiz, Pogge, Ebbett, May, Christensen, and he let Beauchemin go when he couldn’t come up with the cash. And you really think that he is going to jump through hoops to overpay for a player he’s already set a maximum on?
    -
Also, you do realize that Semin is hands down better than Ryan, right?

    @ Cameron:

Ummm….show me an overpayment at the deadline in the last 5 years. Seriously. So you can’t? OK.
    -
So you are telling me that 3/4 of a year of Semin is hands down better than a 3 years younger player who has yet to hit his upside and can be signed for cheaper? Name 1 team that would offer Bobby Ryan a contract starting with 10 and 8 million, and I will show you a GM who will be fired shortly thereafter. Oh, and what was Semin’s stats back when he was Ryan’s age again? Oh right….same as Ryan’s.

I do appreciate the thought you put in on your trade proposals, but when you are 100% wrong, take you punishment, suck it up, and move on – and stop trying to belittle someone who has it all over you. You’re eroding what little credibility you have left with posts like the last one.
